Central Coast Catch 23
On tap from the brewery
Appearance: dark brown, very good lacing, and medium head.
Smell: rich hops, grain, and rye.
Taste: rich malty hops, slight chocolate, and a light rye finish.
Mouthfeel: medium.
Overall:
This is a nice brew. The hops are very pleasant and prevalent. The rye isn't very strong, but you can taste it in the background. 4.5

I first went to CCB in May of 2015 and tried the Catch 23. It was honestly one of the best beers I've tasted. A few months later I went back...and they did not have it available! Fortunately, a few weeks later it was available, and my 2nd tasting of Catch 23 matched my 1st. The Catch 23 is consistent, and the rye perfectly balances the hops. My wife hates bitter/hops, but she enjoys this beer. I love rye (bread, whiskey, beer, etc.), and the rarity of this blend makes for the ideal for me.
By the way, Catch 23 is listed on BA as an "American Black Ale" style. CCB refers to it as a "Black Rye IPA" - which is a MUCH better description of this beer (the beer notes properly distinguish this).

Pint on tap at THG. Reviewed from notes.
A: Served a woody dark brown color with a thick and long lasting cap of dark tan head that lasted almost the entire beer through. Sticky streaks of lace were left down the glass.
S: Mild biscuity malt up front is quickly overpowered by earthy and forest hops. Nice and piney with just a hint of roasted character.
T: Very clean IPA flavors of follow the nose. I taste hints of tropical hops which lingers along with that hint of roast from the nose. Rye is definitely toned down as I get very little spiciness.
M: Very clean and crisp mouthfeel, smooth, with tons of hop bitterness that lingers in the aftertaste. Creamy carbonation, super clean and crisp. Finishes dry. Medium body.
O: One of the best blacks ipas I've had. Very delicious. Almost no roast, and the sweetness is low. If I was blindfolded I probably would think this was just a normal ipa.
