Up for review is a 12oz bottle of Marzen from Silver Gulch. Served cold, in a pint glass. Pours a nice orangish amber with a thin beige head. Some grainy malts and sweet candies. Light body drinks well. Nicely carbonated. Nothing too great, but a good lager to quench your thirst I guess.

12 oz bottle I got from my good friend Molly who is now living in Fairbanks. She just left my house to get ready to go back to Alaska after her Christmas vacation here in the South and I figured I would have a beer she gave me to see her off. Served up in a standard pint.

A: Has a nice orange color to it. Actually has a bit of a amber/red quality to the look as well. Held to the light I am getting more of an orangey to yellow hue to it. The pour got me about a finger of crisp, white head. Sadly, not getting much of retention to the head. It falls after about five minutes. o lace to talk about really. Body is nice and clear with a lazy carbonation activity to it.

S: Has a decent amount of sweetness in the nose. We are talking a good amount of caramel actually. Behind that I am getting a touch of spiciness of the hops coming out. Grains comes through with a good amount of earthiness that really starts to dominate the aroma as this warms up. Very nice.

T: Not much unlike the nose really. Grains are nice and earthy. Has a good heft to it. Sweetness is coming out in some light caramel and a touch of red apple at times. Hops are light but present, bring a touch of spice to it. All of this flavors are light and just enough. Absolutely works as a Marzen.

M: Heavier side of light in body, has some wieght to it but it doesn't take it out of the light category. Carbonation is good and medium, I mean damn near perfect. This actually does have a lingering tingle to it on the throat and I can't tell if it is the alcohol or not, but I don't know what else it could be. Otherwise, rolls of the palate and finishes pretty clean, leaving just some grains in the aftertaste.

D: So yeah, big ass suprise here for me. I was a bit bummed when I saw lager and I was even more bummed when I saw Marzen. I am just not a fan of Marzens, they just seem so bland and redundant. This one is different though. Has just enough flavor but keeps the drinkability level easily. Smell has some dynamic to it as well, and the feel is awesome. I am sold and would love to keep a sixer of this in the fridge as a lawnmower beer. Damned fine.

My pour got me a finger's worth of off-white head with low retention. The color was a really pretty reddish-orange with NE-quality clarity. The smell was bready, grainy, malty, leaving no doubt that this was an Oktoberfest. The mouthfeel was a little on the thin side with a nutty, biscuity taste in the mouth. The finish was slightly sweet with a lingering nutty biscuitiness. Not bad, but not necessarily my favorite style, either.

Appearance: Amber to light brown with minimal head.

Smell: Limited aroma of caramel.

Taste: A real winner--strongly malty, without being unbalanced. Slight sense of biscuit, rubbed with noble hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation allows all flavors to mellow and interact harmoniously.

Drinkability: A first rate "real" lager. Goes excellently with food selections on hand at the brew-pub.

Appearance: Pours a clear, orangey-amber body sporting a thin ring of whiteish bubbles.

Smell: Grainy aroma with little bit of caramel and a scent of floral, spicy hops.

Taste: Light caramel maltiness, some toasted grains. A splash of sweet apple juice. Very mild hop bitterness. Overall sweetish finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: Light and easily drinkable, sure, but there are many better representatives in the style to be had.

Appearance: Amber color with a minimal white head.

Smell: Smoky malt character with a touch of hops.

Taste: Roast malt evolves into a mild hop finish. A fruit quality lingers throughout.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium body.

Drinkability: Decent brew. I have seen more Silver Gulch brews around lately, and they do not disappoint.

This beer is light red, almost apricot colored in appearance, with just a touch of head, which quickly dissapates.

The smell is immediately sweet, and resembles its main competitor here in Alaska, the Alaskan Amber.

The taste is malty up front, with a tiny bit of hops on the finish.

The mouthfeel is light, which contributes to its easy drinkability.

Presentation: 12 oz bottle. Black and white picture of Alaskan mining. No freshness info.

Appearance: Pours a clear reddish color with a head that is thin, but has pretty good retention.

Smell: Aroma is malty - definitely reminds me of other Oktoberfest beers. Just a hint of noble hops come through.

Taste: Starts off sweet and malty, and then the noble hops come in to balance things out. Just a little bit thin.

Overall Impression: Nice drinkable beer - perfect for the cool Alaskan nights.

Pours a nice red hue with a 1/2 inch white head, reminds me alot of Eliott Ness. Nice malty lager with a nice amount of bitterness. An enjoyable lager. Another thanks goes out to my Brother and his family who brought me back some Alaskan beers to sample.
