Style | ABV
Munich Helles Lager |  5.40% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (43), on-tap (8)

Notes:
Clean & refreshing, this Bavarian style lager uses four different German grains & three hop varieties to create an intricate flavor profile & a beautiful deep golden color. Helles is brewed in the style of Munich’s everyday drinking beer. Prost!

Poured a clear, bright orange with a finger of bright white head. Weak, grainy aroma.

Moderate carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Big grain up front with light hops, caramel, corn, and dry biscuit mingling with grass on the finish.

Full-flavored but a little sweet...the "sticky" malt makes things a bit less refreshing.

Bottle > Pint Glass
A - Pours a lighter gold color, no head, no lacing.
S - Barely any aroma here, a little lager yeast at best.
T - Yeast, and a slight hint of lemon rind i think.
M - Slightly bitter, but not awful, nothing stays on with you.
O - This is just a regular beer, nothing special about it.

I don't care for the style, but this wasn't bad looking. It's a bit darker than what I expected. Still clear, but it's darker than straw colored, instead a deep goldenrod shade. Despite the light shade of the helles, the head is a stark contrast in extremely bright white. A good two fingers thick, it retains well leaving a faint, splotchy haze behind.

It's got a nice malty nose to it. Slight savory overtones come wafting up and what I think is something lemony.

Everything in the nose shows up on the tongue. Malt backbone with savory hops dancing a little jig with kind of a yeasty finish.

In addition to not thinking the mouthfeel sucked, I actually enjoyed it a bit. There's the slightest addition of sweet citrus to balance out the German yeast and hops. It's still light bodied, but it's crisp and dry in the finish to round out the experience.

Overall it's nice beer for the style. It's easy to drink, and would be even better on a hot day. I generally avoid lagers, but I enjoyed this one.

Poured it directly from a cold bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance - Nice pour; velvety, fluffy head; about 3 fingers worth of head initially but it faded fairly quickly. Light golden in color; almost transparent.

Smell - Pretty difficult to discern; lemon-like; zesty; a lager-smell; not too intense.

Taste - Lemon; subtle bitterness; refreshing; fairly simplistic, not much to elaborate on here; a standard lager in my opinion.

Mouthfeel - Slightly bitter; comfortable on the palate, though.

Overall - Average lager, not really something to write home about; a refreshing, light beer for a hot day on the beach. Not much to this one...

Appearance: Poured into a Pilsner glass is a clear and golden colored beer with thin white head.

Aroma: Lemon zest in the front, herbal notes, grainy, floral hop dryness in the nose.

Taste: Biscuity with some light malty sweetness and some slight butteriness. Lemon zest, grainy, citrus hop. The mouthfeel is rather crisp with a good dry finish.

Notes: A good example of the style and drinkable. Cheers.

Pretty good beer, although I'm not sure I would buy this myself (it came in my January Beer of the Month Club shipment).

It was a pretty gold color with a tiny white head. There was an absence of lace.

The aroma was fresh, outdoors, grassy.

Taste was similar to aroma. Grassy hops, a little bread.

This was a crisp, refreshing beer that I could see accompanying a slice of pizza.

Poured this into a Heavy Seas pint glass. Yellow gold in color, minimal head with fast rising bubbles. Smells of grains, Budweiser. Tastes like your average run of the mill lager, a step above the macros but that's about it. I would tolerate this at the ballpark with a hot dog or something of that nature, but otherwise will not re-visit.

For my 40th I got a gift for a Beer of the Month Club, and Fordham was one of the selections. So the Helles Lager is a good place to start. It has a nice orange gold color, and though there is some lacing, the head dissipates quickly. Smell has a light grassiness to it. The taste is solid for the style - grainy, a little herbal, not very bitter, and nicely balanced. The mouthfeel is similarly pleasant, with a pleasant malt presence. I definitely recommend this as a good lager.
