I had a hard time getting this one, the bartender didn't understand me and I almost got a different beer until I pointed. It poured a VERY black with a very light scummy head and no lacing.

The aroma was a light smokeyness with little else. The taste was the same light smoke with roasted grain.

The mouth was light with slight bitterness, I liked this not too smokey, very good.

This poured out as a very dark brown color. The head was a cream color, the retention and lacing are minimal. The smell of the beer had a slight roasted aroma along some earthy yeast and hop aromas. The taste of this beer had some caramel notes as well as the subtle grassy and roasted flavors. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a dry carbonation to it. Overall the beer is good, I would like it to be a little fuller in body. It's a good brew though and glad I tried it.

From the bottle: "Dark & rich with a big beer taste, Doppelbock is an exceptionally smooth, full-bodied dark lager with a bold character that is sure to brighten your spirits. Doppelbock is brewed with strict adherence to the Reinheitsgebot, the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516."

I got a finger of fizzy, mocha-brown head from my pour, but alack and alas, it did not hold up for very long. Color was a deep dark-brown with ruby/garnet highlights. Nose was rich and malty, very caramel and chocolate. Mouthfeel was medium and the taste was initially hot, followed by a rich caramel flavor that I began to doubt my sanity at having begun the day with this one. Warming, it took on more of a toffee/molasses flavor. The heat remained evident on the finish and I was beginning to contemplate lying back down after this. Proceed with caution at your own risk!

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a very dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is malty, some sweetness. Taste is also big on malts, bready, some caramel, alcohol is present. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall makes for a quality beer.

Clear and brown with a slight tawny collar and a skim of fine bubbles coating the surface. Grainy aroma with notes of caramel sweetness. Low bitterness up front with significant sweetness and a hint of hops in the background. Full bodied and decent texture. Overall it's pretty good.

The label says 8.4% and bottled on 11/14/11. It has some of the traditional dark fruit and caramel malt aroma, with a licorice edge. But the flavor is a little more American and clean, with toffee and a little cocoa barley over a hint of cherry. As the beer warms, I taste some higher alcohols, but otherwise this is a fine stab at the doppelbock style. I'd drink it alongside a Spaten Optimator any day (though this has more body.

A - Medium dark reddish brown with 1-1/2 finger head of tight off white quickly dissipating bubbles. Some lacing and minimal alcohol legs.

S - Sweet malty caramel flavor with a slightly tart finish and an alcohol kick.

T - Malty, sweet, with caramel, prunes, spices and figs.

M - Medium carbonation, with a medium-thin body. Could be a bit fuller.

O - This no Ayinger Celebrator but it is a decent representation of the style. Annapolis is my hangout and I do like the Ram's Head and Fordam beer. Give this one a try at the brew pub in December on tap if you are in town. It is better than its bottled version.

A: pours a dark brown with a fading head

s: smells of caramel and kinda bready

T: pretty much the same caramel out front fallowed by some bready stuff

M: decent carbonation med body

O: not to bad but i have had much better ones, got this free on a trip to the brewery i would not bya sixer

Pours a moderate brown color with a thin head and not too much in the way of lacing. The nose carries some light caramel malt and a bit of bread. Quite tame. The flavor is really quite blend with none of the deep maltiness I expect from a good doppelbock. Medium body with adequate carbonation. Nothing special here.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into dimpled glass. Deep dark brown coloured body with a slightly ruby tinted body and a nice sized, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, alcohol, metal, nuts, cherries and some nice subdued oak. Full-bodied; Robust malty and nutty flavours come through with some raisins and pit fruits along with a touch of metal near the end. Aftertaste is rather sweet, with some bitter malt and nuts. Overall, a good dopplebock, more on the sweet side, but the alcohol comes through and some nutty flavours dominate at the tailend. Perfect after a cold day of riding.

A - Ruby brown with a white head that dissipates slowly. No lacing.
S - Very sweet chocolate. Hint of coffee. Tinge of sourness. Slight yeasty smell.
T - Sweet malty with no hop presence. Touch of alcohol. Dark fruity flavors, hint of banana, slight grassy finish. Very "green"
MF - Syrupy and pretty thick. Mild carbonation. Hint of warmth.
DB - Could have a couple without issue.

A solid beer but nothing particularly special, no drive to revisit this.

Served in a crystal mug this beer pours a mahogany red with a off white head which dissipates rather fast leaving some lacing in the glass.
The smell does not tell me to much of what to expect.
The taste is quite interesting. Malty sweet, some fruit like prune at the front, but immediately kept in check by some hops. Towards the end the bitterness increases and leaves a bittersweet aftertaste. I would characterize this beer aaa medium bodied, the alcohol well hidden. Also I am not necessary a fan of Doppelbock, I did like this beer. It is definitely worth trying.

A: Black as night with redish hues hard to judge cap as is gone rather quickly.

S: Rich sweet maltyness with traces of molasses.

T: Light hop in the back front is full of heavy malts and some licorish notes.

M: Full bodied and warming, smooth.

D: Very, makes one appreciate the purity laws of 1516, Reinheitsgebot.

Does go very well with a bit of Chocolate !

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Reviewed on my droid.

Pours near black with reddish hue. One finger of foam dissipates quickly. Aroma is malty, sweet, caramel.

Flavor is a bit boozy, heavy on the dark crystal malts. Thin bodied. Not a huge fan of doppelbocks in general, and this one doesn't do much to change that. Could use a thicker consistency to improve mouthfeel. Overall decent but not great.

A good doppelbock with a remarkable price-quality ratio.

Presentation: 12 oz brown screw cap bottle. Black and white front label with a positive negative composition dominated by the Fordham tail with the branding in red and yellow transitions. Back offers a short narrative with a description of the brew, brewing intent and adherence to the Reinheitsgebot. Displays a semi erased printed bottling date (11/03/??) Shows Alc. by Vol. (8.0%). Served in a tulip glass.

A - Ruby brown pour, with a short lived head, minimal surface memory and lacing.

S - Sweetnesss with a final sour touch, with almost a hint of soy.

T - Malty, sweet, with a characteristic doppelbock sourness. Touches of fruitiness in the form of prunes and figs. Caramel and a touch of spice.

M - Medium body and carbonation, with a slightly thicker finish.

D - Nice doppelbock, it is a fair drink.

Notes: Maybe I am a bit biased towards the style, meaning that it really is not something that I typically look out for. This one with an amazing price/quality ratio was a nice pick all things considered and surely is something handy for lovers of the style.
