Pours black with a firm and thick light brown head that maintains.

Nose is big, full, rich black chocolate with hints of sweet cherry and undertones of whiskey; hints of red plum nose and sweet espresso.

Mouthfeel is creamy and rich and appealing. I taste at room temperature which really brings out the creamy "thick" chocolate/coffe malt or shake character of this stout.

Flavors are big and bold and rich strong creamed espresso with hints of mocha/chocolate. All rich bold roasted grain and simply a big bold coffee/black chocolate stout. Full of flavor although not overly complex. One of the nicests efforts I've seen from Mammoth.

A very drinkable "coffee/chocolate" stout with some real big/bold flavors. Nice bitter espresso finish.

I'm a firm believer that especially some of these big stouts and strong ales simply show better at room temperature and without a lot of chill. This one proves the theory.

Bottle pour sampled at mrbubbler's tasting courtesy of brwilson.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark malt and some slight cocoa and coffee bean aromas. Taste is the same with a medium roasty bitterness after each sip. There is a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good stout but nothing all that special.

Split w/ Steve Andrews 12/5/11

A: Dark and a bit watery in the pour. Nice thick dark brown head though.

S: Whooa caramel. Dark chocolate. Malt. Roasted malt actually. I'm extremely intrigued. Rich, complex, unexpected.

T: Definitely a lot of malt and roasted chocolate up front, with some dark fruit providing the body. Quite good, but not as rich as the nose suggested. Smooth and not much of a hint of the booze. Tastes great, but not much I could use to pick it out of a line-up.

M: Smooth, velvety, and delectable. The mouthfeel is one of my favorite parts of this beer.

O: A surprisingly great offering from Mammoth. I approve and recommend.

Appearance: It pours with a full three finger head which dissipates after about two minutes into a thin lacing along the side of the glass. The head is a mocha brown, and for the beer itself it is a deep coffee black in which light cannot get through.

Smell/Aroma: It has an amazing aroma of graham cracker, chocolate mocha, fig, and some dark molasses, along with slight vanilla. The aroma is amazingly intoxicating as well.

Taste: At first sip, there is a lot of graham crackery maltiness, along with that comes a deep rich roast and dark chocolate, with a very faint woodiness. This has a very rich malty, dark chocolate stout; it is very tasty.

Mouthfeel: Smooth richness, with a rich thickness. It covers the tongue with a velvety smoothness.

Overall: This is an amazing stout, it has a lot of the engl9ish malty character that I find to be what characterizes a stout. I opened a bottle about 9 months ago and it had a lot of rich roast to it; but now it is really blended nicely after a year. I believe the year of aging really round this beer out nicely, and to be honest it is at its peak right now. It is an amazing stout, with a rich malty, roast character. Well done, Mammoth!

A - Pitch black in color, slight almond like colored head that dissipates quickly.

S - Smells like coffee and cappuccino. Hints of dark chocolate smell at the back of it.

T/M - Coffee, heavy heavy coffee flavor. Finishes with a bitter, somewhat burned flavor, but damn good all around. Medium to light viscosity in body.

O - Overall a damn good beer, a little "light" if you will coming in at a modest 9% ABV but this strikes me as a beer that will cellar well even though it doesn't break the 10% mark. I thoroughly enjoy this beer.

PP (Price Point) - $6.99 for a 22oz bomber of 9%ABV is pretty damn fair in my opinion. Flavor profile is nice and upfront, not overly complicated. Seek and destroy, maybe even save a bottle or two!

Thanks to Blaine for the share. Pours a brown-black, visibly thinner, and is capped with a scant wisp of tan foam. The nose is a bit redolent in cigarette smoke, coupled with cheap whiskey, and probably smells most similar to one of the septuagenarian strippers at ATLs world-famous Clermont Lounge. The taste is a bit of a step up, but no better than your average run-of-the-mill Double Stout, offering up notes of burnt cocoa, molasses, tar, out-of-place vanilla and smoked meat. The feel is creamier and more lively than the appearance suggests. Overall, interesting, but not particularly good.

Grim, abyssic appearance. Foreboding.

Smells like post-apocalyptic wasteland, scorched earth, incinerated malt, old ashtray. A little bit of vanilla, too.

Tastes like tar pit, burning tire factory, crude oil, cheap cigarettes and the fallen tears of Robert Johnson. Mouthfeel is offensive, aftertaste abusive.

Bomber poured into a wine glass. This stout pours a jet black with a cap of mocha foam that develops after the pour yet shrinks away again almost as quickly. Still a decent pour for a barrel aged stout and able to re-up a surface cap throughout.

Nose of light earthy hops, some chocolate and a lightly whiskey'd caramel and a bit of smoke. Taste is somewhat neutral and lacks the barrel aged notes that were present when the beer was fresh, said notes have moved up to the nose where they weren't initially. Roasted malts and a touch of carob bitterness come through, along with a hint of dark cherry. Finish is a bit short and singular in nature.

Feel is a bit thin and rummy and increasingly so as the carbonation outgasses, though still holding a bit of chocolate spice on the finish. Yet showing notable vinous qualities. Offers an average drink; pleasant and light in body yet without much nuance. Would surely benefit from a bit more carbonation which it might well have at its initial elevation but is lacking here at sea level....

On the contrary to the below reviews, the beer now has a bit of age on it and is coming around nicely.

When served chilled I do get some of the smoke and ash mentioned below which certainly is not the best aspect of this beer however at room temp chocolate and mollassses (spelling) dominate and as it states on the bottle...I'm thinking this WOULD be good with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

This beer smells fantastic. Chocolate dominates.

I have 7 more of these bad boys and am looking forward to what more age will do for them. The smoke and ash have most definately subdued and this stout I'd imagine will have come into it's own in about 8-10 more months.

EDIT - It's been some time now and I've had 5 total bottles so far. They vary. 3 have been very ashy and fit other's reviews and the other 2 were as I reviewed above.

Cheers!

A: The pour is quite dark, essentially black with a nice big tan head on it.

S: Without mincing words, this beer smells like an ashtray. All burnt, charred, and ash aromas with perhaps some roast and smoke as well for good measure.

T: And now I think I know what an ashtray would taste like. A few redeeming qualities interspersed with a note of coffee somewhere, but primarily ash, char, and burnt malt.

M: The body was actually not terrible, medium, we'll say. And the carbonation was moderate as well.

D: I should really know better than to buy a Mammoth beer, but the allure of the tick was too great. Fail on my part.

Big thanks to PeaceLoveBeer for the chance to try this one!

A-pours a dense viscous looking opaque black motor oil color with tons of a dense dark chestnut brown colored head.

S-the nose is a little different, sea salt, peat moss, a little ashy up front. roasted malts lie behind with notes of chocolate and slightly burnt coffee.

T-the taste is offensive, tons of peat moss and ash, almost oyster like, notes of sea salt, the roasted malt is subdued underneath as the back end is dominated by burnt ground coffee rinds and a moderate coffee bitterness.

M-full to medium body, thick and sticky, somewhat chewy, low carbonation in back, thins out in back as well.

D-this is a pretty poor beer, not a big fan, the flavors are messy and the malts seem way off. almost like a worse mikkeller beer with big ash and coffee bitterness.
