Notes:
aka Mammoth Golden Trout Pilsner

Golden Trout Pilsner: Crisp and refreshing as a high Sierra stream, High Country Pilsner/ Golden Trout Pilsner combines a light malty body with a floral hop finish. Pilsner malt, Vienna malt, and noble hops make this a beer of exceptional flavor.

Appearance - Pours a crystal clear golden color with a slight orange tinge. White, half finger head. Sub-par retention. Spotty lacing.

Smell - Aroma consists of grain, with touches of honey, caramel and a floral hop character.

Taste - Moderate notes of grain and honey upfront while hops come across lightly, as floral with a minor grassy bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Light to medium in body, with moderate, somewhat lively carbonation. Nice crispness. Goes down easy.

Overall - A fair to good pilsner. Flavors are there, but don't necessarily hit the mark quite where they should. I don't know that I'd buy it again, but I have no problem with drinking this, and on a hot summer day, who knows? Without better options, I'd give this another swing.

Mammoth probably has a stronger presence in my area than many here, so I've tried their beers on more than one occasion as the better alternative or to mix it up some. In most cases I'm pleased, though never wowed.

I feel like the Bros' review of this one is a bit harsh. While the Golden Trout Pilsener isn't by any means phenominal, it's a quietly tasty offering that's easy to take down by the mug on a casual summer night. There's a solid head with retention per usual, smooth mouthfeel with a little brothiness on the tongue it seems and a very mild hop character. I'd like the beer to be more crisp though.

I also get the feeling from reading these other reviews that it's not very good out of the can or bottle. I've only had this one on tap and it's been alright.

843rd Review on BA
Bottle to Pilsner
22 oz

No bottle date

Purchased at Shell Station, Bishop, CA

App- Very clear yellow with a moderate amount of bubble activity from the bottom up. Only about a 1/2” head formed. As it fell a small amount of lines formed.

Smell- A true bit of pilsner was there. That lemony, earthy, dank note. A bit of butter.

Taste- It's light, but not very flavorful. Its a tad run of the mill, but I guess most pilsners are. Has some lemon, wheat, and a bit of flavored water. A little balanced malt not for flavor depth.

Mouth- A light bodied beer with a high carbonation. A little lemon, and malt residual flavor.

Drink- It wasn't too bad and it wasn't too good. I keep trying to like pilsners and lagers and they just fall short for me. I have a few more Mammoth at home and hopefully they are more like the BA 2011 Bluesapooloza.

Poured a very pale golden dull yellow. Small fizzy white head qucikly faded to nothing. Only thing left was a flat yellowish liquid. No head, not much in the way of visible carbonation.

Light musty grain, maybe some corn. Nothing too terribly impressive here. Was actually quite dull in the aroma category. Smelled like a Natty ice. Boring, dull malt grains, mixed with a slight corn or rice flavor. Nothing really making this pop or stand out to me. It just didnt have anything behind it.- Light feel, decent carbonation. This was about the only redeeming category. It was not slick, a bit thin, but the feel was actually a bit enjoyable.Very decent if it is cold, anything above fridge temp, was defiantly not worth the trouble.

Overall this was entirely forgettable.

Had a pint at Sloccum's in Mammoth. It was a clear gold beer with a white head and fruity character. There were light hints of traditional dry pilsner malt and spicy hops, but for the most part, it was a bland, smooth a juicy taste that dominated this beer. I'm sure it appeals to the masses, but not to pilsner lovers.

12 oz can into a Pils glass.

Pours a clear gold, with a ½ finger of foamy bright-white head. This retains with a thin look, which leaves some light spotty foam down the sides of the glass. The aroma is citric, grassy, and bready feeling in the nose, punctuated by a sharp earthy mustiness. There's a bit of a mineral smell here that a little off-putting as well. Not a fan.

The taste starts with a sharp tingle of hops and a bitter splash of citrus up front. Unfortunately the grainy sweetness of the Pils malts fall a little flat across the back of the palate and seem to die out way too soon. This finishes with some lingering earth and bitterness that hangs in the mouth for too long. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, being crisp up front but then lessens into a flatter feel the more it sits in the mouth. Amazingly enough, despite a sub 5% ABV, this almost feels like this is too beefy in the mouth and really cutting back on the drinkibility of this.

This just wasn't a very well done Pils, with a malt and hops out of balance and a body that could be more crisp and clean feeling. Nice looking can but that's about it.

Reviewed from notes.

Why does this beer have THREE names?

A: Small white head fizzles down to nothing far too quickly. The beer is hazy orange and straw yellow at the edges.
S: Interesting aroma for a German pils. I get citrus right off the bat, like there's a lemon sitting in the beer. Spiciness and wheat, and not-so-fresh grains that are otherwise indescribable. Refreshing on the nose, but had this been a blind tasting, the aromas would have made me think wheat instead of pils.
T/M/D: Grains, grass, earth, fresh hay bales, citrus, and mild spice. There's definitely a lot packed in there, with a bitter citrus zest to boot. Highly carbonated, and I actually choked on the first swallow, but light on the body. I'm tasting a combination of at least two different styles, which makes this beer a bit of a mess. With a pils, I expect crisp/clean/straightforward flavors. This one is all over the place.

A CANQuest note of thanks to tjensen3618 who heard my impassioned plea for more new CANs and came through with this one. CAN you dig it?

From the CAN: "Beer as Big as the Eastern Sierra. Alpine Water, Organic Ingredients, CAN-Conditioned. This golden Pilsner is crisp, light & refreshing. We start with pristine alpine water from our source at 8,000 feet; brew with organically-grown barley and hops; and then CAN-condition with active yeast to keep this beer fresh and alive from our brewery and into your hands. Cheers! Microbrew in a CAN? Aluminum CANs are less expensive, lighter to transport, easier to recycle and more convenient to 'pack out' than glass bottles. Aluminum chills fast and is perfect for tailgate parties, hiking, camping, fishing, river rafting, golfing, boating or any outdoor activity. Brewed & CANned in the High Sierra by Mammoth Brewing Company, Mammoth Lakes, CA."

Surprise! Another craft CAN filled all the way to the brim, erupting with beer when cracked open. My pour created a little less than a finger of off-white head with low retention. Color was a cloudy yellow, like fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. Nose had a peppery hoppiness to it, underlain by grass and mint. Yum! Mouthfeel was medium with a lager sweetness along with a mild hoppiness on the tongue. Finish was dry, crisp and refreshing, just as advertised. Nice lacing, also. This could not have come at a better time, what with the CANQuest momentarily out of steam and the weather being steaming hot. I was glad to add it to the CANQuest, but it was like many other Pilsners out there. If you CAN get some, great, but don't fret otherwise.

A: The pour is a slightly hazy straw color with an initially fluffy white head which dies down to a thin ring.

S: The nose is sweet and toasty with an almost honey like aroma. There isn't much in the way of hop character, but plenty of biscuity malt.

T: The flavor is similar to the nose in that it is sweet and bready without much in the way of hopping. There is perhaps a touch of bitterness on the finish, but almost all malt.

M: The beer is nearly flat after what seemed to be a well carbonated pour. Very odd, especially for a pilsner.

D: This is a fairly average beer, and it's not necessarily bad, but the near stillness of the pour really didn't do much for me. Between this and the Amber ale, it would seem there are some problems with the Mammoth quality control.

My throat has beem semi-dry all day. Time for an after work beer:

A nice pour into my glass. At first look, the beer is golden sunlight blonde in color with a glow, and a finger's thick of quality head on top. Great retnetion. Dried grapefruit, lemongrass, grains....those aromas tease the nose. slightly rough at times. But in the mouth, the overall flavor melds better. A slight twist of lemon appears first, then lemongrass takes over from there. The lemon has a bit of an astringent edge to it. Surprisingly flavorful for just a 4.2% ABV lager beer. Medium bodied, creamy in the mouth... good pilsner.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours yellow, with a small, fizzy, soapy white head, very good lacing.

S: Classic pils, with an earthy herbal Saaz hop note, sweet malt, lemon zest.

T: Big malt right off the bat, the Vienna malt used is clearly evident in a flavour that was not unlike Boston Lager. Lemon rind, orange, grapefruit pith and grass, make a tasty mix of American and German styles.

M: Sharp, crisp carbonation. Light bodied, very good feel for a pils.

T: Loved this pilsner, a great one out of Mammoth, possibly the best beer I've had from them. Full-flavoured, a great refereshing summer beer.

Pours clear gold with active bubbling and nice white head that dissipates just a little too quickly but leaves a good webbed lace. Light malty aroma, a little grassy with a hint of fruit. Good malty IF with a slightly piney, mildly bitter aftertaste. Light bodied and smooth, almost creamy and slightly tongue coating. Overall a decent session beer but priced too high for that really. I think the $18/12pack of cans is too high for a beer of this caliber. It's good but should be a bit less expensive.

Tap @ Clocktower. Pours clear gold with a nice little white head. Clean, bright aroma of hops, grass, pine, and sweet yeast. Refreshing taste of the same, but a dry finish. Honey, lemon, and bread also come out towards the middle. Nice beer, but nothing that stands out.

Notes:

From a bottle and poured into a pint glass at 8000 feet, the same elevation at which it was brewed...

Pours a deep straw golden in color with a thick lasting head. Mostly clear, yet offers some spotty lacing given the lively carbonation.

Smell is of sweet malts yet offers a good degree of depth. Slightly pungent on the nose and with a touch of piney hops when agitated. A touch of Vienna malts are overriding yet not overwhelming.

Taste is somewhat rich and a touch chewy on the malts yet not overly sweet. Rather robust for a pilsner.

Feel is decent with a nicely carbonated finish and a nice malt and hop kick on the close. Drinkability is good and this beer can warm up without suffering any ill side effects.
