a staple of the maine beer scene for as long as I can remember, it was a total realization to finally visit this mecca of fine Belgian ales. the place is quite large, an industrial looking campus with nicely manicured property and some tanks outside. inside its packed, everyone with a four beer flight of delicious ales. these pours, quite generous, I learn, are FREE! no charge at all to sit and drink for fantastic beers. how cool is that. cant buy a pint though, it looks like they are working on that, but for now its just tasters, big ones. beer for sale, and an awesome cookbook in the shop is worth the 35 bucks I paid for it. visible barrels in the background where the magic happens and a chattery pub makes a cool atmosphere. service is as good as it can be for how busy it is, and the price does not get any better. the golden brett, curieux, and fluxus were special treats. this place is the bomb and so is their beer!

visited Tuesday (9/3) and arrived early for the noon tour, which allowed us to sample prior to the tour. staff was EXCELLENT in describing the beers & really employed a sense of the passion that is felt/seen throughout the brewery. sampled white, house beer, saison rye, curieux, and bourbon barrel black. each one was really well-done. space is industrial - but cozy as the ceiling is lower in the bar area & wood is used throughout the tasting area. swag is scattered throughout the indoor space, and bottles are available for purchase at the most competitive price I saw while in New England. picked up a mix 6 of 750 ml.
the tour was great. after being on 25+ tours now, more seem to be the same - but Allagash was definitely one of the best & unique. not to sound cheesy or repetitive, but you can really sense the passion for the craft. Behind one of the large slide doors capturing, "Innovation: Continually pushing the limits of beer and ourselves," we were able to witness & smell barrels after barrels of curieux aging. we also were led to an older space that houses even more aging barrels of Vic, cerise, tyranny, respect your elderberries, etc.
prior to my visit, I was very limited on my exposure w. Allagash, as it is not available in the Midwest outside of Chicago. I must say - I'm a fan, now. A big fan. Rob Tod and crew are doing it right - producing great, distinct beers & having fun experimenting w. their coolship series.
One of my favorite brewery stops, by far.

The brewery is nestled in a cozy area in what I found to be the quiet and relaxed norm of Maine. In adopting this attitude and combining it with my own California calm, I was graciously welcomed by the tasting room employees. Reserving a spot on the tour, I decided to enjoy the complimentary sample flight of brew with a corresponding discussion of their style and profiles.
The tour itself was informative, to say the least, allowing visitors the opportunity to walk among the employees and brewing equipment asking questions. Stretching from initial fermentation to storage and then bottling, the whole operation seemed smaller than I had imagined. Apparently California is their largest market, though, so I figured my distributed access to their brew was the reason I felt this way.
The last part of the tour was the experimentation facility with connecting barrel room. This had to be my favorite part of the tour, being surrounded by so much amazing beer. I even saw some barrels of Coolship! (Although, I sadly didn’t get to try any.)
This is a very friendly place with passionate people who know a lot about beer. Highly recommend!

Very knowledgeable staff. Great selection and the tour was phenomenal... great brew... a bit pricy but it's worth it cause they make great beer. We went when they were under constriction and they were apologetic but it wasn't all that bad.. pretty big place for a craft brewery... lots of choices and curiox was one of them which was surprising... so good we bought a Bottle Allagash makes great beer... enough said

I've been here three times now and this is up there as one of my favorite tours and brewery experiences. The tour and tasting is free, so there's really little downside. The tour itself takes you through the brewing facility. They do have a pretty cool, state of the art brew system. The best part of the tour is the barrel room. They've got a pretty big barrel program at Allagash and you can see all of the quirky beers that are aging. All of the tour guides I've had have been very knowledgeable, talkative and friendly. The tasting is awesome. The tasting room is nice, features wooden tables, a bar, and ample seating. You get 4 sample glasses of their beers. All of the times I've been it's been White, Black, Curieux and FV13. Considering the price of FV13 and Curieux, it was nice to get to have some free (and the FV13 samples convinced me to snag a few bottles). They also make a house beer which you can only get on site. They've got a pretty standard selection of swag for sale. Overall, this is a great brewery with a great tour.

They have just recently updated their brewery to be able to produce more and it is beautiful inside. The knowledgeable staff showed us around inside the brewery and over to their separate building which holds their experiments. Sample at the end with four of their beers that change based on whats newly brewed.

The tour is amazing and free. It does require reservations so go to the website. The 4 beer flight before or after the tour is also free! The only downside is there are only 4 at one time and there are no options to get pints on premise. Still doesn't stop me from going as much as possible.
