FV 13 marks our first venture into the world of foudre beers. Foudres are giant oak tanks used for aging (this one holds 2700 gallons.) FV 13 is a blend of wild yeast and bacteria, a base beer with lots of malt character, and about four years of patience.

375ml bottle poured into a gueuze glass.
A: Rusty golden color with a good deal of haze. A thin cap of white head retains surprisingly well. A thin ring of lacing slides slowly back down into the liquid.
S: Sharp acidity. Sour white grapes, green apple, sour cherry. Musty and wild funk. Well rounded malt character of caramelized sugar, coconut flakes, and vanilla cake. Fragrant and pervasive oak. Mouth-watering.
T: Sharp, acidic tartness. Green apple, sour cherry, and vinous white grape. Soft touch of vinous alcohol. Layers of rustic funk. Thick caramel and custard. Oak drops in and dries things out. Dry oaky finish with faint caramelized sugar, pear, and tart green apple.
M: Thick body for the style. Robust and chewy. Round and hefty. Low scrubbing carbonation. Warming alcohol.
O: Holy Christ this is excellent. Lots of big and round malt character with all the requisite tartness and funk. It offers another dimension not found in most sours. A real eye-opener for those who think only of Belgium when discussing world-class sours.

12.7 fl oz bottle
Served in a wine glass
Bottle 10/27/2012
This beer pours a brilliant rust color with burnt orange highlights. Not much head. A scant, tan film quickly disappeared.
Tart cherry, green apple. I even get some caramelized sugar. It has a nice degree of sourness with hints of oak.
Initial sweet flavor that is quickly overwhelmed by sourness. Caramel and sour cherry.
Medium bodied with a super smooth mouthfeel. Lacks much carbonation
Nice sour ale.

L: Had this beer on-tap at Capital Ale House - Innsbrook, poured into a snifter glass. Had a golden yellow color and a hazy consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Good lacing.
S: A funky and sweet aroma of yeast, wood, citrus fruit, and stone fruit.
T: Tasted of a hint of wood (the barrel-aging), some stone fruit notes (cherries, in particular), lots of funky Belgian-style yeast, and a decent shot of citrus fruit (lemon, orange). Like the aroma, the flavor is sweet, tart, sour, and a bit funky. There's a slightly earthy quality to offset those qualities. Extremely vibrant and tasty.
F: A well-carbonated beer with a sharp finish. Medium-bodied.
O: A totally enjoyable sour beer. Drinkable.

Poured a golden orange body with minimal head and slight lace. Tart, vinous, cherry aroma with that hint of oak. Light to medium body, slightly sticky, the yeast and “wildness” is tempered by a vinous tartness that gives off cherry sweetness and tart, crisp finish.
