Collaboration with Brouwerij De Molen

Smoke and Beards is a collaboration beer brewed with Menno from Brouwerij de Molen (Netherlands). It is a smoked Tripel ale brewed with a blend of 2-row and smoked malts then lightly hopped with Northern Brewer, Hallertau and Saaz.

Smoke and Beards is hazy and light golden in appearance with an aroma of light smoke and spice. The flavor is smokey with hints of dried fruit. The dry finish and medium body make Smoke and Beards very drinkable.
Brouwerij De Molen was founded in 2004 by Menno Oliver in the town of Bodegraven, in the Netherlands. The brewery, whose name means "The Mill", is located inside a historic windmill building known as "De Arkduif" that was built in 1697. De Molen has created a broad range of beers of widely-varying styles, including American, Belgian, English and German influenced creations. Menno also has a habit of naming beers with paired words like "Donder & Bliksem" ("Thunder and Lightning"). Once meeting a few of the Allagash brewers, he knew he wanted one of the words for this beer to be beards.*

*No beards were harmed in the making of this beer.

This guy was served from the tap at The Blind Tiger in New York, NY. It glowed a hazy, golden honey wheat coloring through the walls of the generic tulip it arrived in. it held a one finger head of creamy white bubbles, showing nice retention. Tight patterned lacing was left dripping. There was big haze to the beer, with no sediment, and average carbonation. The aroma showed pale malts, nuttiness, sour notes of lemon and orange flesh and rind, and leathery booze with cooling winter spice of bubblegum esters. Clovey phenols came on the back, with a surprisingly light smokiness. Our first impression was that there was huge smoke and peat sitting alongside significantly citric and souring malts. As we sipped, big smoke and meatiness of a winter ham hit the palate. These flavors mixed with apple and orange flesh sweetness, and walnut smoothness. The middle peaked with clove and more of that succulent ham quality, with more bittering phenols, orange peel sweetness, and the biggest smoky punch of the entire tasting. The finish was of big Band-Aid phenols and bittering medicinals, coconut and walnut sweetness to cut, and a final smoothness of caramel sugars and vanilla booze. The aftertaste breathed of smoke and char, winter spice, piney hops, and hollow echoes of fusel ethanol. The body was medium, and the carbonation was medium. There was nice slurp, smack, cream, and froth, with massively big bubbles bouncing around the mouth. The palate was slightly dried, and a bit puckered, but otherwise happy. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank on the easier side.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the big smokiness of flavoring. It really hit the palate hard, waking you up much like too much wasabi. Through the flavoring comes a big variety of maltiness, and the Allagash Tripel base does become apparent. The smoke plays off this nicely, but by the end of the glass it becomes a bit much, and you might be hoping there was someone by your side to split the burden with you.

Hadon tap at blind tiger- pours a hazy bright golden yellow, with minimal head, retention and lacing.

Smell is mild- pale malt, yeast, some candy sugar and a hint if smoke.

Taste is very nice but unexciting considering the name if this brew. Lots of traditional tripel flavors; banana, yeast, pilsner malt, candi sugar. If there's any hint if smoke, it lingers throughout and never punches through.

Mouthfeel is nice medium body and light carbonation. I like allagash- but this is not up to snuff imop.
