Our interpretation of a traditional Belgian wheat beer. Brewed with a generous portion of wheat and spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel, this beer is fruity, refreshing and slightly cloudy in appearance.

I was lucky enough to get a few of these over Christmas, really enjoyed the first few. Time for a proper review of this 5.1% ABV brew.

A-Poured into a tall glass this beer gives 3 fingers of a fluffy marshmallow white head which is lacing the glass as the foam recedes. Fairly cloudy with that characteristic pale yellow color with a greenish tint. Lots of tiny bubbles.

S-Characteristic Belgian White aroma. Fruity esters, orange peel, spicy wheat all in delicious harmony.

T-Upfront wheat, herbal and spicy with a tart endnote and slight bitter orange bite.

M-Fairly high carbonation, a smoother creamier body than most whites. Very nice.

O-The best American version of one of my favorite beer styles that I've had the pleasure of trying. Well done.

12oz.

A: Slightly murky pineapple yellow with a big spongy white head.

S: Lightly herbal and spicy (cloves, cardamom, a bit of coriander), some soapy yeast, sweetish pale malt.

T: Soft, bready yeast, white cake, coriander, raw wheat, slight citrus.

M: Light-bodied with low carbonation.

O: This is tasty and balanced, although it could use more carbonation.

A: hazy lemon-colored beer; finger of white foam that didn't persist

S: floral and fresh, of some pale malts and aromatic hops

T: some citron, bright yeast, slightly sweet malt, lightly tart and crisp

M: light-to-medium body, smooth, creamy, and soft

O: a very enjoyable beer, albeit one that didn't blow me away

Special thanks to my 2012 Secret Santa Montrose! The beer was chilled and served in a pint glass.

A- The body of the beer is a hazy light yellow coloration. The head was thick white and desolved to a ring of foam.

S- Lots of yeasty esters floating around the glass. Bubble gum, cloves, corriander spiceyness, rides along a gentle lemon kissed wheat aroma.

T- The flavor of the beer is lightly sweet lemon, cloves spiked with corriander nice gentle wheat flavors.

M- The body of the beer is light but not watery. The carbonation of the beer is spritzy and works well with the beers character.

O- This is an interesting and delicious American version of a witbier. Honestly getting this beer in this box makes me miss Allagash all the more.

An allagash white was brought home for me from the girlfriend!

A- white pours a hazy yellow that is very light and faded in color. A strong head that quickly recides

S- pears, tartness, citrus, with the Belgian yeasty scent. Very appealing and mouth watering

T- delicious ripe corrieander and wheat shine with a refreshing fruit taste that meshes well with the yeasty flavors. So refreshing that I could drink this all day

M- smooth and crisp flavor

O- best witbier I have ever had. Crisp and tart with flavor and completely on point with the bready yeast flavor that coincides

An enjoyable, drinkable witbier. Quite a bit of fizz to it with a short-lived head, some banana and definite yeast notes and the wheat prominent. Very light on the spice and citrus notes - just enough to make it fun. Aroma and flavor similar. Typical tan/gold/slight haze appearance. Easy drinking, good session beer? Can picture sittin’ on the back porch in the rocking chair with a bucket o' these.

Review from notes.

Allagash White
10/26/12
12oz, bottled on 7/25/12

Pale, cloudy yellow with an effervescent head. Spotty lacing and decent retention. (3)

Aroma is all yeast and a hint of spice. Kind of raw and definitely sulfuric. Not great. (2.5)

Flavor is slightly sweet, with a smooth yeast character. Powdery yeast and rustic wheat blend with subtle notes of fruit and lemon. Light and gentle on the palate. Dry finish with a bit of acidity and funk, though not much. Very clean overall. Each sip gets you coming back for more. Drinkability is through the roof if you like wheat beers, which I do. (4, 4)

Allagash is one of the best examples of Witbier brewed in the USA, and I can't believe I've never reviewed since I live in Maine. Great example of a light, drinkable beer that has interest. (4)

Very strong flavor. Best used for cooking. Made a braised chicken dish and a kielbasa with apples recipe that was out of this world. I tend to enjoy milder tasting beers. This Allagash White was brewed with spices and was exactly what I was looking for in a cooking base.

Got this on tap at a Manhattan burger joint.

Poured to a slightly pale opaque orange color with little head--very nice to behold.

Smelled acidic, tangy and citrusy--it's about what I'd expect.

Tasted nice--slightly bitter to start with a smooth finish followed by a hint of sweetness. The citrus (especially orange) flavor comes out, and the bitterness is not overpowering.

For a white, it's unusually creamy and has substantial body, yet it's crisp and doesn't bite back. I'm happy with the mouthfeel.

Overall it's one of the better whites I've had--I'll enjoy this again.

Looks great. big foamy head with lots of sticky lacing, and a hazy body, which i actually prefer for the style, plus i pour aggressively so it's going to happen if it is not filtered.
nose is decent, a lot of lemon is there, it has a slight astringency , with some clove notes also among many spices.
Coriander and lemon off the front, clove, wheat and yeast are working together and equally, creamy full body and low to moderate carbonation.

Solid, easily available and cheap.

Pours an almost opaque color, fairly pale but pleasant looking. Lacing is light but noticeable and a film remains throughout. The smell is very sweet, of fruit - especially bananas and something else I am unable to distinguish. The smell is extremely satisfying. There is barely a hint of alcohol at all and there are notes of banana and cloves and even a little caramel. Despite the sweetness there is a fine balance with the hops. The carbonation is just right - not overpowering and not flat. One of the best beers I've had recently and Allagash White certain gives many European whites a run for their money.

Appearance – Pours a very clear golden color which is odd because others report a cloudy appearance. After further review the instructions on the bottle say to pour, swirl, and then pour yeast - now it’s cloudy! Has a nice head that quickly disappears. Lacing is light-medium and quickly sinks back into the beer.

Smell – Coriander, spice, and a hint of lemon. Very nice!

Taste – Wheat, coriander, and spice.

Mouthfeel – Light, with a mineral water like feel to it.

Drinkability – A very easy drinking and all around good witbier.

Pale hazy yellow with a 2 finger head with good retention and lacing. The aroma has citrus, coriander, wheat malt, and some banana.

This is an incredibly easy beer to drink. I can taste citrus, coriander, wheat malt and banana. Tastes just like it smells. Has a light sweet flavor, and there is just enough citrus zest to make this perfectly balanced for my tastes.

Light to medium bodied with above average carbonation. There is a light citrus aftertaste, and this beer is incredibly easy to drink. I would definitely like to try this again if I get the chance.

Poured nicely with a little head (less than one finger). The picture was taken about 1 minute after pouring. Appearance is cloudy, but pleasant yellow. It looks like what I’d expect from a wheat beer. I got a lot of lemon and coriander when I first smelled it. On first sip, you definitely get the coriander. It’s not overwhelming, but it’s not overly simple either. It’s a nicely balanced beer. I’m also getting a little bit of clove, and the more that I drink it and the citrus flavors definitely come out. It’s got a nice carbonation to it and I could see easily putting away a bunch of these while sitting on a patio on a summer night.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Sam Adams pint glass

A- very cloudy, light yellow in color. Two finger width head with nice sticky lacing

S- not the best part of this beer, but good nonetheless. Yeasty

T- amazing. Cloves and spice with a nice malty background.

M- nice carbonation, perfectly balanced. Very drinkable

Overall, this is one of the best beers I've ever tasted. Made me want to run out to the liquor store and buy more.

Appearance: Probably the best look of any wit. Lots of foam and great lacing. Thick banana yellow in hue.

Smell: Banana, clove, yeast, and some minerals. Not amazing, but it hits all the right notes.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Lots of clove with a hint of banana. A bit sour in the finish. Definitely some grape/wine flavors here. Mouthfeel is very full-bodied and crisp. I taste some lemon as well.

Overall Drinkability: I was excited to try this one. It's quite refreshing despite the fact that it's a bit heavier. Overall, I'm not in love with this, but I definitely recommend it as a very good witbier.

Poured into a Dogfish pint glass. No readable freshness date.

A- Pours a cloudy straw-like color that lives up to its name with a 1/4 inch head that quickly dissolves to a paper-thin ring around the edge of the glass and light surface foam. Lacing is slippery and trickles down the glass quickly without much pattern formation.

S- Very crisp with plenty of Belgian yeast fume and spice. Some lemon notes and fresh banana.

T- Rich and full with tons of banana and a good amount of spice to complement. Yeasty, light citrus flavors and a tad chalky. All the elements play off one another with great symmetry. Not too sweet and not overbearing.

M- Thin but with some viscosity due to its unfiltered nature. Medium-low carbonation and a bit of prickle from the spice.

O- One of my top 3 white ales if not number one. You can't get it everywhere which is a shame because it's a must-have. The best is when you can find it on tap in which case it scores 5's across the board.

Appearance: Slightly hazy yellow color with one finger of head that fades slowly with a nice curtain of lace.

Aroma: Yeasty with some lemon over pale malt. Hints of clove and allspice in there as well.

Taste: A bit creamy up front with a hefty amount of wheat malt providing a solid base. The spices really come alive in the middle along with the yeast, with the clove being the most pronounced. The spices fade a bit towards the finish but remain pretty prominent, along with a touch of orange rind bitterness.

The Rest: A solid, well executed wit with nice body. A bit spicier than most, but still very good.

12oz bottle of Allagash White poured into a standard pint glass. I always pour this using the pour 2/3, swirl, then pour the remainder method. Served at about 45*F.

A: Cloudy, hazy, straw yellow, with a two-finger bubbly head which quickly dissipates and leaves behind nice thick lacing, which continues down the glass as it empties.

S: Lemon, grass, and a little bit of funk. Light smell overall.

T: Yeast, lemon, banana, clove, coriander, and perhaps a little bit of pepper.

M: Quite light, very carbonated, yet leaves a nice coating on the mouth. Dry, crisp finish. Low bitterness.

O: Allagash White is a fantastic Wit. I love the way it's balanced, the feel, the taste, and what it leaves behind after every sip.

Poured from a bottle into a Duvel bulb. Cloudy pale gold color with a small head and some retention. The nose is fresh and fruity. I get notes of bananas and oranges. I also get a sweet musty note as well.

Very light to medium bodied beer with a firm mouthfeel. The taste is on the sweet side, almost as if some candy sugar were used. Sweet, lemony flavors in the front of the mouth give way to creamy bananas and just a hint of tart orange. I don't get as much tartness as I like and I don't get much of the coriander and clove herb notes one comes to expect in this style. Still, very tasty and refreshing.

I thought this was a very refreshing, enjoyable wit, but it's not one I would try again. It's just a bit too sweet for me. I tend to like witbiers that are a bit more tart. To me they are more refreshing.

This beer is a beautiful straw yellow in color. It's cloudy and produced a lovely two finger foamy, pure white head. There is a large amount of carbonation making this a very stunning beer..poured into a pilsner glass.
The aromas were very strong in this, I was able to detect wheat and some spices that I just can't place.
It's sweet and spicey with some very nice herbal hop notes. A very pleasant tasting beer to be sure.
It's light bodied and effervesent. A very crisp and clean feel to the body.
This is a delishious light bodied, low ABV beer that I could drink over and over again on a nice hot summer day.

I would say that this is the best Witbier I have had thus far. The spices and citrus fruit flavor is well balanced and the mouthfeel is nice and light. Maybe a little rough up front, but when you start to take in all of the flavors its really nice. It's a good summer beer and one that can be paired with all kinds of cuisine.
