Belgian Strong Dark Ale |  7.20% ABV

Availability: Winter. bottle (421), on-tap (30), cask (1)

Notes:
Grand Cru is brewed with a touch of peated malt and spiced with coriander, sweet orange peel and a hint of anise. It is deep golden in color, full bodied and has hints of smoke and licorice in the taste and aroma. The malty, warming finish is perfect for colder weather.

A: From the tall brown bottle, pours an amber (brown/orange) color body with a 1cm head of off-white bubbles that quickly vanishes. Semi-hazy with visibly active carbonation. Good lacing along the sides of the glass after each sip.
S: Scents meander through sweet, mildly bitter apples, hints of orange zest, Belgian yeast, and some brown sugar. Relatively light in the nose, however, as one has to seek out these scents quite a bit.
T: Musty Belgian yeast with mild sweet-sour (fruit) effects as presaged by the scent. Spices: clove, ginger, coriander. There is some lingering malt presence in the finish.
M: Quite carbonated at first, but done so in a way that the beer turns into foam within the mouth and not a harsh bubbling effect. As the session moves along and carbonation fades, one experiences a pleasant medium-bodied beer with a dry finish.
D: A delicious Belgian ale with many pleasing aspects and an alcohol level that allows for generous enjoyment.

on tap at Duckworths (NC)

Pour is a bit light for the style. The clear amber body is covered by a bone head that has great retention

Mouthfeel: near medium body with appropriate, medium carbonation.

Taste and Aroma: Plenty of alcohol esters and Belgian yeast. Also rather sweet. Wild yeast in the flavor that is not apparent in the nose.

O: unusual for style, this Belgian ale was disappointing but should appeal more to folks who like wild yeast in their beers more than I do.
