Notes:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.
Fluxus '09 was brewed in the style of the traditional Saison. For our twist, we added sweet potatoes, black pepper and a generous amount of hops. Sweet potatoes not only enhance its pale orange appearance, they contribute significant body. Centennial hops produce a bold grapefruit aroma, which is followed by a mild, honeysuckle sweetness. The intensity of both the pepper and hops are felt throughout, leaving a lingering warmth on the tongue. Papya, citrus and pepper dominate the flavor profile.

The main thing that I would say about this beer is that it is a million times better when it warms. Most beers are, but this was like having two totally different beers. It's also a lot more like a Belgain Pale than a Saison, but regardless - it was pretty tasty. Mouthfeel and appearance were average. Smell is of sugar, honey, bananas, and pepper. Taste is a tad more caramelized, with added notes of pears and apples and a definite black pepper finish. It also has this very "Allagashy" flavor, like I could tell I was drinking a beer produced by the makers of Allagash White or Allagash Triple. It wasn't my favorite, but I'd have it again.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 2009 batch 2. Pours lightly cloudy golden orange color with a nice 2-3 finger fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big pear, apple, sweet potato, pepper, clove, grape, earth, caramel, herbal, and yeast spices. Fantastic aromas with huge complexity and great balance; does not feel overly sweet at all. Taste of pear, grape, sweet potato, biscuit, brown sugar, pepper, herbal, earth, clove, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of pear, grape, biscuit, brown sugar, pepper, caramel, herbal, earth, and yeast spices on the finish for a good bit. Great flavor balance and complexity; no cloying flavors at all, slightly dry on the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a lightly slick and quite crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic saison style! Very high complexity with great balance; and very crisp and smooth sip on. Highly enjoyable stuff!

Served in a Duvel tulip glass.
A discounted bottle means I'm finally biting. This stuff pours a hazy auburn-gold topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises sweet biscuit, light honey, Belgian yeast, light green apple, clove, a pinch of nutmeg, and a smattering of light hay throughout the background. The taste brings in more of the same, with an earthier character all around, and a touch of added sweetness throughout. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a pretty nice saison, though I'm not sure the sweet potato really shined through as much as it could have. Of course, this could be from the couple years of age...

Batch # 1.
Pours a murky light honey orange with a 1 inch puffy white head that settles to a thin film on top of the beer. Small chunks of lace slowly slide back into the remaining beer on the drink down. Lots of sediment is floating around in the glass after the pour. Smell is of malt, yeast, and some peppery, sweet potato, and minty aromas. Taste is of malt, yeast, black pepper, and subtle sweet potato. There is a minty aftertaste I am getting with this one. This beer has a light crispness with a medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some interesting aromas and flavors.

Thanks, Blake, for this awesome 750!
A- Pours a darker straw/golden color with a very large fluffy, white, bubbly head. Very clear liquid with a plethora of visible bubbles within.
S- Really smell those sweet potatoes! Now, whether I would know those were sweet potatoes without the bottle telling me.. I'm not sure? Also has a marshmallow-y caramel scent with some slight esters. Overall a sweeter presence in the nose.
T/M- Just as advertised on the label and first experienced in the aroma- I really get a ton of sweet potato flavor, and that is backed up by the nice spicy peppercorns. Flavors overall mimic nose closely, making this a light bodied, but sweet beer. There are hints of butterscotch, but it comes off as a complex flavor addition rather than a diacetyl flaw. Body is pretty light and damn well carbonated! Though it doesn't taste like a saison it sure feels like one. Alcohol incredibly hidden!
O- Interesting concept for sure. I liked this, but it did get a little old after awhile. Pretty straight forward with what they is in it and what it tastes like. Kinda was similar to a light bodied, liquid, sweet potato casserole! Sign me up for more, just not a 750.
