Notes:
The Victor Ale was inspired by its feminine-named predecessor, the Victoria Ale. With chardonnay grapes to make the Victoria Ale unique, our brewers decided to use red grapes for the Victor. Over one hundred pounds of cabernet franc grapes were crushed on site and added directly to the mash. In addition to a generous portion of Pilsner malt, Victor is hopped with Fuggles and Hallertau and fermented with a wine yeast strain. With a focus on the subtle wine-like character of the grapes, the 9.0% ABV brew maintains a copper color, wine yeast influence and a medium body with a tart and spicy finish.

look: 4.5 | smell: 3 | taste: 3 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3
Appearance: Pours a deep copper body with a lush, creamy-looking white head.
Smell: Floral, honey-coated aroma with plenty of yeast, spice, and that ever-present grape character.
Taste: Initially, the flavor is quite sweet with a bready, almost cake-like maltiness and, yes, there's that ever-present grape character, which comes across more as a tart golden raisin flavor. Hops provide a tiny bit of bitterness and a light citrus note. Wraps-up with a semi-sweet, vinous finish that exhibits a fair amount of alcohol.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Moderately carbonated. Sticky mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Allgash is one of those breweries well-known for always cooking up interesting twists and turns to implement into their brewing. Some of these ideas pay off in beer drinking gold and others, well, they just remain as cute concepts. For me, this is one of the latter.

750ml bottle. 2012 vintage. Served in the DFH signature glass
Appearance: Pours a murky gold/orange color with 2 fingers of a creamy off white head. Great retention and lacing. Body is very hazy with lots of visible carbonation streaming throughout.
Smell: Red grape, floral, bready malt and some light yeast spice.
Taste: Vinous grape, apple, spice, fruity esters.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium/high carbonation. Slightly tart and dry finish.
Overall: It's a solid belgian pale and the grapes do add some additional complexity. Pretty good stuff, though not quite worth the high price tag.

2012 bottle
A: poured into an oversize wine glass to a deep orange with slight red tint and a finger of dense slightly off white head that is slow to fade
S: smells of yeast with a slight fruitiness and a bit of pale malt. slightest hint of grape jelly as well
T: slightly musty malt flavor up front with a bit of flavor from the grapes and some fruity esters. slightly spicy. finish is slightly funky with a bit more grape and fruitiness with a bit of noble hop on the finish, slightly tart as well on the finish
M: medium in the mouth with soft carbonation from bottle conditioning. carbonation is adequate. slightly drying on the finish
O: pretty good, steep in price for not being barrel aged. I remember last years version a bit more favorably but this one isn't bad. good complexity and it's something different

750mL into tulip. aged in my cellar for the past 2 years.
A: slightly hazed, light copper body. bright white head is frothy. retention is average/good. lots of spotty lacing as the brew goes down.
S: a little tart and acidic. slightly vinous as well. a floral bouquet of sweet fermentation aromas, cara malts, and grapes. different.
T: there is a distinctive apple juice flavor in here. chewy unfermented malt sugars. I would say slightly more sweet than acidic. a minor earthy hop flavor. mostly sweet finish.
M: carb is subtle. medium, full body.
D: not sure how well this bottle held up with time. would like to have a fresh Victor to compare. regardless, haven't had a brew like this, very vinous throughout the nose and drink.

2008 vintage on tap at Kickbacks in Jax. Poured into a snifter. White head, low retention on a clear, light golden body. Clear lacing, some suds. Aroma is deep and musty, includes green apple, green grapes and some candy sugar. Taste follows the aromas pretty closely, no alcohol on tasting or in aroma. This beer has aged incredibly gracefully. Developed some extra sweetness and some complexity. Wonderfully delicious and extremely tasty.
