Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy |  10.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating. bottle (144), on-tap (15), cask (1)

Notes:
Our interpretation of a Belgian-inspired Scotch ale, Musette undergoes a caramelization process in the kettle, where the first runnings are condensed and caramelized, imparting a unique and subtle caramel character and amber color to the beer. Following fermentation, a portion of it is aged in oak bourbon barrels for three months. Musette features raisin and ripened banana aromas. Its taste is malty and caramel with a hint of roast, and its warm finish strikes a balance between dry and caramel characters with a hint of smoke.

Dulled light maple brown color with a bit of dark orange cast to it. Dense medium capping of light tanned foam sits firmly for a bit before fading to a light skim. Lacing is impressive in big sticky sheets.

Aroma is a well rounded display of dulled malty tones that enrich the thoughts of thick vanilla, brown sugar, raisin, fig, and a slight nuttyness. Thickly sweet and dulled like that of something being caramelized. But there's a very nice noting to a slight yeasty funk that adds just the right amount of bardyard sourness.

Taste is rich and fulfilling with malt enduced flavors and thickness. A fair blend of vanilla and caramelized candy coated breads texturize the palate into submission. Sweetness is tamed only by slight accents to some smokey, lofty oaken wood notes and slight tang of Belgian soured candy and floral farmhouse funk. Finishes thick and impressive with lots of tone and length. Malts are lovely in this one. Yummyrific!

Feel is velvety thick and lasting. Smooth in tone but substantail in a malty girth that screams thickness, yet yells softness as it bellows them both out during each wonerful taste. It has a great soaking nature to it that engulfs you into the session and the enjoyment is heightened.

A lovely beer by Allagash. Thick, rich, lasting, inviting, and overtaking. Really at this point I'm left speechless as it supercedes words for the most part. Heavenly.

Pours clear with a tall head. A nice amber color with bright golden hues.

Smells delicious, very bretty and also quite sour. Mild mustiness and some caramel malt. I know it's a barrel-aged wee heavy, but this works too. Plus, I have very limited experience with Allagash and it seems everything they brew is either Belgian and/or sour.

Tastes nothing like the nose - like oxidized oak and caramel without any real sourness.

A bit hot and boozy.

Ultimately this turned out to be a beer pulled in opposite directions, and I am unclear which way the brewers intended it. But it appears to be an infected barrel with a bunch of oxidation from either that same barreling or from the age on this corked bottle.

Thanks to whoever tweeted that the Saucer had afew bottles of this stashed. Had the 2008 vintage poured into goblets, shared with new friend over beer stories.

A: heavenly color, cloudy brownish red with little head and light lacing. Nice carbonation for being 3 years old.

S: OMG. Caramel, slight nuttiness, malts.

T: As good if not better than the smell. At 10% the alcohol was just present enough to remind you its a scotch ale. The spice and malts were amazing. Got so much better as it warmed. It was such a shame to finish it.

Mouthfeel, being it was the end of the night my mouth was kinda wrecked so not sure exactly of the real mouthfeel, was pretty cotton mouth by then

Overall I'd have this again and again if I could, sad that its retired, may have to go back for another bottle. It was hard enough deciding on this or Curieux!.

750ml bottle: 2006 vintage. This one pours a fairly clear, ruby tinged amber color. There was a bit of a tan head on it, but it didn't linger long, nor leave any lacing. The aroma is nice. There is a fair amount of the oak in the initial nose. Lots of other aromas in there: fruits, bread, caramel, faint spice, maybe some peat. The taste is quite good. It is quite complex and starts a touch sweet, but there is a bit of caramel, fruits and smokiness on top. There is a bit of oakiness there also, as well as a slight bitterness to the finish. Almost a bit of a port wine characteristic to it also. Very Nice!

A bottle from the March 2008 bottling. Poured into a tulip glass, and shared.

Pours a murky brown with highlights of burgundy. There is an espresso cream-colored head that is fed by ample carbonation and streams of bubbles. The head is retained very well, and great lacing.

Aromas are of oak, scotch, cherry, and some peat-smoked malts. The aromas are not muddled at all, and the cherry is really nicely balanced with the somewhat understated peat-smoked malt aromas. There is also a touch of toffee. Once in the mouth, the scotch and peat-smoked malts come through more. It is not overpowering--which I find to the fatal flaw in a scotch ale--which is great. These give way to previously unseen vanilla and raisin flavors, coupled with the cherry and oaky tannins that have been seen from the aroma.

Musette is smooth and creamy with a medium body and surprisingly light carbonation. Complex and not muddled despite the myriad of flavors, this beer is thoroughly enjoyable, and I look forward to finding it again.

Purchased at Whidbey Beer Works: http://www.whidbeybeerworks.com/ a neat little beer store.
Poured into tulip. Poured a reddish mahogany with a nice tan head that had good retention and lacing.

The aroma was a nice blend of malt and peat, with a trace of smoke in the background. The flavors were very well melded, everything went very well together. Malt, peat, smoke and a hint of spicieness.

The body was nicely full and well-rounded without being heavy. Drinkability was very good, and this isn't one of my more favorite styles. Overall, a very good beer that's worth seeking out.
