Notes:
Allagash Curieux was the first foray into barrel aging. Curieux is made by aging our Tripel Ale in Jim Beam bourbon barrels for eight weeks in our cold cellars. The aged beer is then blended back with a portion of fresh Tripel. The resulting beer is soft with coconut and vanilla notes, with hints of bourbon.

Bottled January 26 2012. Consumed November 3 2012

Poured into a snifter

Appearance: light amber in color. Little haze. White head is sudsy, one finger in size. Dissipated to a ring.

Aroma: new wood, oak. Dried banana, not ripe banana. Hint of vanilla and chai spices. Little sweetness tucked behind an otherwise dry woodsy aroma.

Taste: fresh oak is first noticeable followed a little banana sweetness. Then the flavor fades into a little candied sugar with some heat and a touch of bubble gum. Bourbon finishes it, but the heat is tamed and never takes over or ruins anything. Overall, this is elegant and simple, with a few strong flavor notes that are all in equal volume. I never thought a bourbon infused strong ale would ever come across as clean, but this does in a way.

Mouthfeel: carbonation is fine. Smooth. The pour from the second half of the bottle has a little fluffier feel than thenfirst half and inked the second hald better for that. But it's smooth and a little fluffy at the same time.

Overall: bourbon is nicely mellow and doesn't overtake this beer. It was a good idea for allagash to blend the bourbon barrel aged version with some fresh triple. The blend works well. The flavor is unique, some may not like it but I say it's a great success.

Poured a golden body with great carbonation for lots of head and lace patches on top of at first is a lightly tart, funky smell with some sour and tropical fruit notes and spice. Got some sweet fruit and sugariness out of the aroma too but not much woodiness or bourbon. Taste is the same as the barrel aging helps out in the mouthfeel with some smoothness and the bourbon notes are quiet but add some heat on the back but not overpowering. More of a traditional tripel in regards to taste with a solid balance of some tropical fruits like orange peel and banana, some sweetness from sugary malts and possibly tropical fruit and touches of spice thanks to some clove and even a slight sourness (I swear I got a taste of sour apple). Not a traditional tripel in the strictest sense but the addition of bourbon barrel aging is a nice complement to the brew and I thoroughly enjoyed this beer.

Had on tap at Sticks ans Stones tonight.Poured into a goblit a lightly hazed lighter golden with a nicely formed white head.Aromas are big in the bourbon barrel department with mild phenols and spiced pears,a nice mix of things going on.Sweet bourbon vanilla flavors along with more sweet alcohol, spiced phenols are there but kept in check pretty well, some boozy fruit in the finish.A nice barrel aged tripel not over the top bourbon wise but it packs a kick.
