Alesmith is another great San Diego brewery – but you know that. Having visited that fine city during the recent Beer Week (November 2012), I became witness to the embarrassment of riches that are available to thirsty visitors. Of course, if a brewer wants to survive, he (or she) had better make some good brew. Alesmith need not worry …
In any case, their Wee Heavy is a superb rendition of this sweet and tasty style. The beginning is one to impress: a monumental mountain of cream colored foam, sloppy and glimmering, overwhelms the tulip glass; it sits for some time. Beneath this marshmallow crown, there is a dark and impenetrable pool of liquid tar.
There is an intense nose that glops together blasts of cocoa powder, whiffs of brown sugar and a few subtle snorts of grass. This elixir coats the tongue with a smooth combination of semi-sweet molasses and malty toffee.
The balance is excellent; so much that it disguises the Wee Heavy’s eventual potency, one which increases as it nears room temperature. (The bottle provides storage directions.) If you are an acolyte of this style, then this is surely one to add to your collection. A bonny beer!
