American Double / Imperial Stout |  12.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (1175), on-tap (69), growler (7), nitro-tap (5), cask (4)

Notes:
Jet Black, with an off-white head. Starts with a strong coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Clean and crisp, full- bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the feel. You won't fool your taste buds - this beer is HUGE!

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Brooklyn Brewery tulip. The beer looks beautiful! There is a massive light brown creamy head sitting atop a pitch black, oily-looking body. It's amazing that a 12% abv beer could produce a head like this, especially when I didn't even give it that rough of a pour. You just gotta love bottle conditioned beers. The nose is a bit muted (perhaps my beer is a little too cold). I'm getting very faint notes of chocolate, coffee, and leather.

Wow! This beer tastes great! There are big, sweet, roasted malt and chocolate flavors in the front of the mouth joined by nice bitter coffee flavors at mid-palate. There's not much of a hop presence, but I wouldn't look for it in this beer. Moreover, for a 12% abv beer, the alcohol hides itself extremely well. The only time I detect it is right in the back of my mouth as I swallow, and then it's not an unpleasant booziness but rather a nice warming finish. I think it complements the flavor nicely. The mouthfeel is firm and creamy and divine. It's amazing how easy this beer is to drink.

Two things really distinguish this beer. First, the balance of flavors between sweet chocolate and bitter coffee is exceptional. It's so rare to find a beer with intense flavors that has the balance to make it super drinkable. Second, I love the slightly warming touch of alcohol on the finish. It reminds me of those expensive brandy-filled chocolates. For me, this is a darn near PERFECT American Double Stout. As long as it is available year-round and not too hard to get, it will always have a place in my cellar.

Poured into Chimay chalice. Bought off the shelf and in the cellar about two months.

A- Black with an ultra-creamy tan head. Looked like a well-made latte, complete with swirls.

S- The most exceptional component of this for a stout is the nice fruitiness. This combines with milk chocolate and a little coffee. Very malty

T- Roast, bitter, dark chocolate, dark coffee. Fairly crisp

M- Not very thick for the style and abv, but very smooth and pleasant.

O- A very solid imperial stout. It didn't quite "wow" me, but it is a good take on the style.
