Lasting but not really dense and regular head, on a beautiful mahogany color body. The smell is roundly malty, with some toasted and roasted notes, together with a light raw graininess. Some coffee notes, but a bit milky. The taste gets quite enjoyable; a round and intense maltiness, with a roasted bitterness that stays on the palate gets combined with fruity notes of grape and a citric and slightly acidic aspect, with a juicy grapefruity character appearing in the back of the tongue. Mouthfeel is pretty good, round and smooth, yet quite refreshing and not excessively heavy. The hoppy aftertaste, accentuated by the bitterness of the roasted malts may be overpronounced. But overall a decent brew.

Pours clear, dark brown body with red-garnet hue when held to the light, topped by thin yet well formed light tan head that vanishes at medium pace.
Aroma is Munich malt with rich melanoidins reminiscent of bread crust, and chocolate.
Taste is dominated by bread crust flavor and exhibits nice balance between the malt and hop-bitterness. Fish is moderately dry and clean, with notes of nuts.
A bit watery medium-light body with fine, prickly carbonation.

In short, a Munich Dunkel with bread crust aroma/flavor, albeit a bit dull overall character. (500 ml, BB date 12-22-2011, into tulip.)

Pours a deep dark brown, slightly black with a decent lingering white head.
Nose is full of rich dark malts, a bit of chocolate.
Taste is super roasty, some chocolate, a bit of caramel, and a nice rounded bitterness.
Finish is clean with a lingering roastiness.

Wow, I didn't realize how good this thing really was until I started to think about it. Rich and flavorful yet incredibly easy drinking; how much better could it possibly get. This is a beer that really defies the stigma of how lagers aren't as interesting and flavorful as ales.

I was lucky enough to spend a year abroad studying in the Franconian town of Bamberg, Germany and this was by far my favorite beer from that region. I ventured over to the Trunk Brewery several times, which is located beyond the Basilica in Bad Staffelstein and the name Vierzehnheiligen means "the fourteen holy ones." The beer has a dark brown color, almost black and the head (Schaum) is larger than most dark beers with a light brown to tan color. The taste has a very strong presence of chocolate, which only serves to enhance the full body of the beer. If anyone has seen this beer in the US or knows of any way to import it, please let me know. I highly recommend this beer.
