A: Pours hazy light orange color with tints of gold in it. A 1.5 finger white foamy head forms upon pouring and has decent retention. Nice white lacing forms all around the glass.

S: Some bready malt, light citrus fruits, lemon, and a little bit of grain. Rather light.

T: A nice combination of light citrus fruit, honey, and some grainy malt. There is some bready malt on the backend. Finishes sweet.

M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Drinks smooth and rather easy.

O: A pretty good beer. Hoppier than others in the style I have had. Probably not something I would go to all the time, but could see it being nice on a hot day or paired with a salad actually.

Had a couple reviews written in e-mail that I never posted. This beer was consumed (and review written) in late June.

Picked up this bottle at the Stoudt’s Brewery in PA as we drove through on a college campus tour for my daughter. Maibock is an underappreciated style in my mind and I always enjoy these.

Color is on the edge between gold and amber. Slight orange tones straddle the divide here. The head is pillowy/foamy rises at least two fingers and has slight retention. Some lace.

Aroma is fruity, with light caramel notes with some sweetness and a hint of breadiness.

Just a touch too much sweetness for my liking here. Bread notes and a decent amount of bread notes. Spicy hop notes come in late along with a slight taste of honey. Can detect the slightly elevated ABV here. Not hot, but it’s there.

Carbonation is a little strong and almost prickly. Give it a non-smooth mouth feel.

Not among my favorite Mai-Bocks, but still good.

Poured a deep dark amber, very clear with lots of streaming carbonation from the bottom of the glass, but no head. Slight amount of lace. Smell was very bready and grain like, with a hint of a slight bitterness, but definatly bread like. The flavor followed suit as it was highly malted and full of grain like flavors. Not much hops to balance, but ever so slightly dry finish. Kinda thin in feel, not enough carbonation to give it that silky smooth feel. Overall this was a decent offering from foothills, and an average representation of the style. The alcohol is very, I mean very well hidden, I could swear this was a 4% beer, was shocked to see it at 8% before my review. Overall definatly give this one a try if you can.

Draft at Flannigan's Boathouse, Conshohocken. Annoying, bad waitress. Medium to dark gold with alot of a fluffy eggshell head. Sweet, hoppy aroma, flavor subtly floral hops, honey, candi sugar. Very well balanced. Enjoyed. Stoudt's seems to do these German styles well.

A - Pours a clear golden copper color with 1/4" of foam

S - aroma is faint bready & yeasty, some caramel

T - heavy malty sweet base with some fruit and floral as well

M/D - too malty sweet for me to enjoy alot of, good carbonation and medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel

Looked real nice in the goblet. Light, coppery straw color with some thin, fizzy foam.

When the beer initially hit my lips, I was greeted with an appealing, though marginally reserved, signature Maibock flavor. Almost immediately after, as it filtered through to the back of my tongue, I was met with a quite phenolic spiciness. Was this intentional? Strange balance between the classic caramel, ferrous Maibock flavors and crispness and an eerily dry, zippy Belgian strong ale character. The body was a little thinner than I had hoped for but, despite the pungency, the alcohol was somewhat tucked away.

Overall, the phenolic qualities dominated the smell as well, though, some hop and aromas did manage to peek through.

While they were successful in nailing down a decent interpretation of the style's trademark flavor, I wasn't really enjoying the boldness of the spice hammering away throughout. Tone it down and you got yourself a great brew.

A - Golden orange with a forthy off-white head. Slightly hazed and rather active carbonation. Chunky foam left behind on the glass.

S - Sweet breads, lightly toasted, are the the first thing to come to mind. Just a faint earthiness as the beer warms.

T - Sweet bready malts and just a touch of earthy hops. A hint of citrus fruit comes through as the beer warms as well.

M/D - Medium bodied and lively carbonation. Very easy drinking maibock.

I drank this from a 12oz bottle into my Rochefort chalice.

The pours a deep gold that is almost orangy, it is a very intriguiing yet confusing color. The head is about one finger and white. It lasts about a minute and leaves a filmy white cover. The lacing is good.

The aroma is very light, small amounts of hops but that's pretty much it.

The taste is bold explosion of flavor compared to the aroma. Is strong and complex with lots of soft hops and a little sweetness.

The mouthfeel is light, highly drinkable.

A - Slightly murky straw with small white head that quickly leaves to disk

S - Has that light, finessed feel of a good lager in the smell. Rich and subtle.

T - Creamy, nice malt flavor, subtle but apparent.

M - Light body, good carb, fair coating.

D - VERY easy to drink, no doubt.

Pours a crystal clear light amber-yellow hue with a sizeable head that hangs out for a minute. Nice coating layer of lacing and fair amount of visible carbonation.

Smell is very faint, some bread yeast notes and a tiny bit of alcohol in there. Nothing overpowering in the least.

The taste harnesses a tiny bit of sweet caramel accompanied by a bit of bready flavor. Tiny amount of herbal hop character and some alcohol taste but no warmth.

Mouthfeel is pretty on point, somewhat creamy with only a slight amount of carbonation. Coats the mouth nicely, without being clingy.

Drinkability is pretty high. Smooth, not overpowering in any aspect. Easily sessionable, I enjoyed this one.

Pours a nice clean/clear dark golden yellow/orange color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger fizzy/creamy white head, with some sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, slight yeast, caramel/spice notes. The taste is sweet, malty, there's a slight yeast note, caramel and some spice in there. Medium body. Drinkable, a nice little Maibock, thanks Mike.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pilsener glass. Thanks, mikereaser.

Note: Date on bottle reads 7/13/08. Uhhhh, let's see how this one has held up.

Pours a bright amber color. What little head there is doesn't retain very well. Some spotty lacing. There are streams of bubbles rising to the top of the glass.

Sort of bland malty aroma. There's a very light earthy hop presence. Nothing good, nothing bad.

Flavor starts out sweet. Possibly some fruity hints, but I may be talking myself into that one. Interesting bitter hop finish. Better than the nose leads on.

Body is on the heavier side of medium. Pretty smooth drinker. No alcohol detected, but it's 10 months after the bottle date. A rather inoffensive beer, but there's just not enough to it to make me want to drink more of it.

A - A very bright golden yellow body...a one inch foamy white head...settles slowly into a spotty cap

S - Almost smells like a macro...pale malts

T - Solid malt flavor all around...touches of fruit, caramel, and spices throughout

M - Medium body...very carbonated

D - This is a great spring beer...it was my first of the style and I think it was a pretty good start

10oz pour on-tap at The Pit served a crisp light orange with a thin eggshell head that lasts as a thin layer. Aroma is a decent amount of crisp malts. The taste is an interesting blend of crisp sweet malts with a nice hop profile backing it up that leaves an interesting bitter finish. The beer is medium bodied with slight alcohol presence, but still provides the refreshment expected in a Maibock. This one was certainly enjoyable.

Pours a hazzy yellow color, when held to the light has a copper looking color. Two finger white head which resides rather quickly but leaving a ring on the outside edges of my beer.

Smells like fresh picked fruit. Apricots, oranges, lemons, purple grapes.

Mildly sweet upfront with hints of fruit and caramel, this drifts into a very mild hop like bitterness. Sweet sticky aftertaste.

Body is thin and smooth with a crisp sweet sticky finish.

This is a very tasty beer I could see myself drinking on hot summer days.

This beer pours a light hazy copper color. A nice thick, one finger, white foamy head caps off the pour. Great head retention that left thick sticky lacing on the sides of the glass. Nose is of caramel malts up front, touch of honey and just the slightest hint of citrus hops. Taste is caramel malts up front - definitely sweet! Honey comes in after the caramel, and then is followed by some pale malts that I didn't pick up in the nose. Finish is where you get a touch of citrus hops - I'm picking up grapefruit. This is a medium to lighter body beer, decent carbonation, starts off crisp but has a sticky finish to it, touch of alcohol warms you. This is a nice beer - lower ABV would make it more drinkable, but it is a nice one to sit with.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color with a short foamy white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of light caramelized malts, honey, lager yeast and some hops.

T: The taste starts out with sweet flavors of honey, caramel and some fruit. Then some bready flavors of malts and lager yeast come in quickly, followed by a mild but complementary hops presence. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not very filling, nice kick, very good representation of style, this is a beer that is well-worth drinking for a whole evening.

12oz single bottle poured into a regular kitchen glass.

A- Stoudt's BDM has a bright golden color to it with hints of light bronze and a bunch of bubbles gaining in height. Easy to look through the glass, this is a pretty clean brew. A nice sustaining 1 inch white frothy cap left nice sheets of lace all the way down, quite nice.

S- This smells pretty sweet with a abundance of toasted malt giving off caramel. This bottle is nearing the best buy date so the hop presence had died down some but there are some lone survivors. Smelling some brown sugga with warming with some light citrus smells hiding.

T- Big huge malts are prevalent throughout but do not smother this maibock surprisingly. They actually work well with the brown sugar taste making for a sweet ride. Come to think of it some honey is here as well and I could of swore I tasted some cinnamon. The hops, while faded keep this beer together although a fresh bottle would be wonderful. Top notch.

M- Sweet and on the medium bodied side of things. Well carbonated and the flavors are not afraid to show themselves around the mouth. All in all a good feel for a bock with a slight oily base. Not insulting at all and refreshing as hell.

D- With the taste and feel I knew this was over 5%, but i'm impressed that Stoudt's got all this flavor with only 7% ABV to show for it. I would not mind to drink three in an evening, it's just that enticing. Come spring time around may this seems like a no brainer and I will grab a 6er or more of fresh bottles.

On tap at home. Kegged date is not stamped.

Appearance: is very pilsnerish, light yellow with a small cusp of head. Head does not last long at all.

Smell: malt backbone and biscuit. Nothing to overwhelming.

Taste: starts out slighty sweet with a smooth creamy texture. After the inital sweetness, the taste becomes drier. I can definetely detect a hop presence with a lingering biscuit aftertaste and a long dry finish. This taste like Stoudts Gold Helles Lager that has been imperialized. This drinks like 4-5% ABV and after 2 of these, you feel the 7%. Well Done!

Overall: This is absolutely one of the best Maibocks I have ever had and proves why Stoudt's makes some of the best Lagers in the US!

I received this beer in a trade from mikereaser. This is the first Blonde double Mai Bock that I have ever tried, so I had no idea what to expect. I pulled this beer out of my fridge opened it and it foamed up all over my counter. fun fun fun. This beer poors a nice golden blonde color, and it has an interesting sweet malty smell. The taste is sweet, but not too overpoweringly sweet, with a bit of a hoppy bite. The 7% alcohol is well hidden. If this beer was available in Arkansas I would drink it quite a bit.

Beautiful golden pour into my Celebrator glass. Smallish white head which doesn't last very long. Good bit of lacing down the side of the glass.
Bread malts in the nose, a bit of honey as well.
Lightly sweet malt and a bit of hops in the flavor followed by a hint of buttery malt in the finish.
Nicely refreshing mouthfeel with a fair bit of carbonation.
Pretty easy to drink. The alcohol is well hidden.
A nice example of a style which I don't see too often. This is actually last year's bottling. Now that Stoudt's has come to NC I'll be looking for this one in the spring.

Look: Gold, slight haze
Smell: Low hop scent, some citrus
Taste: Slight wheat taste. Bad after taste but smooth drinking

I think this was an old bottle. I read they stopped brewing it in May. It was consumed late September. I was really hoping for more from this beer but it fell far short. I'll probably try it again but only if it's from a new batch.

On a side note, this is my first beer review.

Wow was I shocked at how good this one was! Poured it into my tulip glass tonight...

A: Pours a very surprising clear gold with a splendid two finger head that laces incredibly. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, as this is a "blonde" maibock.

S: Smell is very upfront and in your face with Pilsner malts, brown sugar and caramel.

T: The taste is phenomenal and very complex. Tons of pale malts, but tons of caramel and brown sugar notes that blend magnificently. Very sweet, but very tasty.

Overall, this is a great beer that I am kicking myself for only picking up one of.

Appearance: They're not kidding when they call this a "blonde" Maibock. Looks more like a witbier or a pilsner than a maibock, very clear yellow-white body with a thick white head. No effervescence present.

Smell: Aroma is more like a Maibock, though. Very malty, dry, strong notes of caramel malt and a touch of sweetness way down deep. Slightly hoppy. Very interesting, inviting.

Taste: Again with the caramel malts balanced with sharp hoppiness. Sweet and malty in the middle, very dry on the finish. Tastes like a very well-balanced and well-exectued maibock.

Mouthfeel: Thin, slightly carbonated, very hoppy. Smooth, clean.

Drinkability: It's a bit too cloying to be on the same level as Sam Adams Boston Lager or Rogue Dead Guy, but overall this is a decent Maibock, well worth the cost. I'll be buying it again.

Was able to get a case of this on clearance (only $12.99!!!)

Wasn't sure what to expect, I knew it was a little out of date but the 7% ABV would make it last a little longer. Tastes like a strong Kolsch if I had to describe it... a dark yellow in color with a bite a hint of alcohol in the after finish but not much at all. Very interesting.. listed under the same style as Dead Guy from Rogue which I thought tasted better, but this is a much better deal and for the price it was exceptional.
