A re-visitation of the original Stoudt’s German-style lager. This beautiful Dunkel dark style lager is reminiscent of the monk style bock beers. Very malty, full bodied, bottom fermented lager that might just incline you to search for a goblet to drink it from

Reviewed out of a snifter glass.

Appearance: crimson brown, pours a quickly dissipating head and fair clarity.

Smell: Caramel malts, and sweet grains.

Taste: Opens with dark fruit and roasted malts. Like a classic bock, very clean profile. A slightly surprising hint of coffee blends with the clean sweet malts. This bottle has been in my cellar hidden behind all the various bottles for a surprising 2 years, that being said I've picked up a slight oxidation as this warms up that wasn't detectable when cooler.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied but packed with solid profiles.

Drinkability: I would love to have this on tap. I thoroughly enjoy bocks and doppel bocks. I recommend this to those who enjoy bocks just as much as I do.

This poured out as a decent looking brown color, decent clarity with a moderate head on top and thin lacing. The smell is of lager yeast and some dark malts. The taste of the beer is of some toasted flavors, subtle hints of chocolate and the yeast giving slight spice note. The mouthfeel is a bit thin, decent carbonation. Overall it's an average beer. Not something I would rush out and buy but it was nice to try.

Splitting a 750 with my friend Derek. Pouring the beer at cellar temp into snifters. The beer pours a rich caramel color with some beige fizzy head that fades to a thin edge layer rapidly.
Aroma is malty as expected with toffee, caramel and a bit of fruit, apricots perhaps? No real hop presence, maybe some earthy notes, but faint if there at all.
First sip reveals a hearty body with slightly sticky texture, this feels pretty big but is smooth and easy to drink.
Flavor is similar to nose with all malt, caramel and toffee dominate with bits of other sweet flavors mixing in, some honey maybe or brown sugar?
Again not really a hop presence on the flavor either. This beer is probably a little big in ABV, but no heat or other hints on the swallow.
A well crafted and enjoyable bock from a great PA brewery!

Stoudts- Bock

A- Dark murky brownish, brackish black with a small flimsy head. No lacing and sorta lifeless.
S- Molasses hits me right away. I also pick up honey, holiday spices like nutmeg/ cinnimon? and some raisin.
T- Sweet fruity malt. Hints of honey, molasses, cocoa powder, and spices blended evenly with a toasted malt grain and sugary finish.
M- Sweet and malty throughout. Fruity with a sugary feel. Finishes off clean.

Overall- Was an easy drinking pint.

A corked and caged 750 mL purchased at the brewpub and shared with a non-BA friend.

A: The bock is a full brown hue, dark but not opaque. A good-sized head, nearly 1 finger, insulated the beer from the elements. As I consumed the bock, mild lace was left behind.

S: The nose is malty goodness. Full of bread, toffee and nuts with a healthy sprinkling of caramel syrup. Earthy hops are a mere afterthought.

T: Nice. The caramel malts, full of syrupy strength, start off. They are followed by nuts and toffee, extra strength malts without the boozy pricetag of a doppelbock. The flavors are sharp, mildly sweet, with a small dose of bittering hops near the end. A surprisingly warming beer for Christmas eve.

M: The mouthfeel is sweet but sturdy. It foregoes the hops, choosing to rely on malty goodness to deliver the flavor. A filling lagerbier.

D: The bock strikes me as a low alcohol (relatively speaking) brew. The malt-centric aspects of the beer make it a good sipper. A nice retro offering from Stoudts Brewing Co.

I assume this is the right beer... the logo on the bottle looks similar to the one for the maibock--what with a ram and all--but this doesn't have the word "mai" on it and when it pours out it sure as hell ain't a maibock.

Anyhow, nice pour. Dark red brown like if you hold licorice up to light. Nice head.

Smells superamazingfantastic. It must be the yeast. Just--great, zippy bockmalt dominates like sweet toffee with light undertones of flowers and then you get a wonderful, crisp, doughy yeast. I've only had one other Stoudt's beer (and that was ages ago), but if this is their standard yeast good good, it smells amazing, like a combination of a maibock and a zwickel.

Tastes really, really good for a beer of its size. Sticky and chewy all around, in the same way that you know a cinnamon bun is gonna be sticky and chewy just by smelling it. Bock malt is in charge, lightly zingy with big nodes of bread, sugar, and frosting, and that's backed up by a phenomenal yeast profile. It's dark but hints towards light and warmer times. You get the outdoory, flowers and pollen flavor of a nice late spring/early summer beer along with the warm, sweet breadiness of an early spring bock. Wonderful. No beer has ever come closer to approximating the feeling of going on a walk in late March.

Look--I'm not the kind of guy who gives beers super high scores just because they're xTreme. Likewise, I don't discount excellently brewed beers just because they don't rape my pallet. This little bugger is an amazing piece of craftsmanship and everyone should try it.

A- Poured into a 16oz tumbler... dark brownish ruby in color, brilliant ruby when held up to the light... with a thick fizzy head that doesn't linger long. Semi active

S- Not getting a whole lot out of it... maybe some faint honey malt aroma

T- Very mild but tasty. Starts out sweet and malty, and finishes with a toasted weak hop flavor

M- Medium to full bodied with light carbonation and a burnt aftertaste

D- I guess bock's are typically a bit higher in alcohol. Although I don't know what the abv is on this beer, it shows no signs of it in the smell or taste. I would say its a pretty drinkable beer in taste profile. Might start to get a bit filling for some people after a few glasses

CHEERS!!
