A: Pours a hazy dark copper/amber with orange hues. Beautiful off-white head that clings moderately to the glass.

S: Nice sweet floral clove aroma. Some citrus and spice. No typical piney hop aroma, but still quite good. Hints of grapefruit, orange and pineapple, but very subtle. Mostly floral.

T&M: Mostly a strong malty sweet taste with mild flavors of over-ripe pineapple and smoky tar or nicotine. Very bready with a deadness not characteristic of the fresh tap or growler taste!

Here is a perfect example of 'fresher is better'!
I can't believe the difference with the bottle and keg. Great beer, but try it fresh whenever you can.

Stoudt's Double IPA - 12 fl oz bottle

Scored one of these and another of theirs I have not cracked yet thanks to an exchange with Hendry.

Look - Pours a pale yellow around the outside and a darker caramel amber in the middle. Nice soapy head with lots of lacing. Minimal carbonation.

Smell - Aroma is caramel malts with a subtle resin hop overlay. Interesting, expected more of a wallop in the nose.

Taste - Rich malty caramel with a slight resin hop over it, just like the aroma. Was not expecting that, a bit disappointed here. It does have some good bite at the end but it does not feel like enough, the malt is center stage and this is a DIPA.

Mouthfeel - Sticky, malty, caramel and sugar, where is the hop linger?? Also a bit on the boozy side. Meh.

Overall - If they called this an IPA I would perhaps give it a 3.5, but this is not a DIPA by any means, this is far too malt heavy. It's like an IPA meets a Helles Bock or something. Hop heads don't bother, but other than that it's hearty, give it a shot. It's not the worst, but it is certainly not the best either.

Stoudt's is another brand that I can't get in Vermont, so a recent family trip to Albany,NY found me stopping @ exit 16 on NY 87 to the Savemore Beverage in Clifton Park. The owner made sure I found what I was looking for and warned me that the Stoudt's IIPA I had in my hand was " A BIG beer and nobody should operate heavy equipment or speak to their wives upon consuming!": I was SOLD!

Super cloudy off orange and unfiltered, so those scared off by a bit of chunky sediment should look no further. The fine white one finger head gave way to a permanent cap in a matter of a couple minutes. Lacing a straight average.

The nose is bright tropical orange and yeast, with malts weaving their way in and out of the background. There is a certain pungent aroma that comes on strong, and combined with the beastly unfiltered appearance, it lets you know right up front that this is not a IIPA fpr the meek.

Flavors, well, how about Orange Julius meets hearty IIPA meets Trapist ale?! A hop forward aggressiveness combined with an almost trapist type yeastiness puts forth flavors that are unique and will end up either being enjoyable and refreshingly different, or a swing and a miss.

Mouthfeel is a heavy medium, quite chewy in the hop department, and the unfiltered attributes are an instant plus or minus depending on your tastes and preferences. The aftertaste is long and bitter, with the 10% hidden quite well.

Fitting squarely in the "Big Beer" category, Stoudt's Double IPA gives it to you raw, unapologetic, and bold. Unique and interesting, those that appreciate unfiltered boldness will likely find plenty to enjoy here in this intruiging IIPA.

This beer pours an amber colour that is very clear. It's bottle conditioned so be careful about pouring in the mud as that will cloud it but not hurt you as it is vitamin B laden and will help with that hangover if you decide to drink more than one of these beauties! The head is a one finger head that remains through the drink as a thin but full cap and leaves a light "Roman Aquiduct" looking pattern on the glass.

The mild aroma is of caramel malt sweetness, plums, faint apple and notes of sodabread.

The taste is sweet caramel and hop bitterness from the start with a mild up front carbonation bite on the tip of the tongue. As the beer flows back across your tongue dark fruit flavours intermingle with the caramel as along the sides of your tongue you can pick up a very mild granny smith apple. Alcohol is mildly apparent along this trip and warms a bit at the end where the bittering hops engulf your tongue, leave you a little dry, and prepare you for that next delicious encounter between goddess nectar and your tongue. Don't mind the mild black pepper that may linger in between sips, it's an aphrodesiac!

The mouthfeel is of a sweet, full beer that ultimately leaves you a little dry with a bit of a coat on your tongue. It's rather nice. The carbonation is lively for such a full bodied beer, but it works in conjunction with the flavours and really brings them out.

Overall I am, even though I am relatively new to the IPA world, going to call this a world class beer and invite all to try it even if you don't like an IPA. I feel it has qualities that can bring out the IPA lover in even the hop faint hearted. Of course it's hoppy, but not extreme. Not at all. And besides, if you don't like it, you can always give the rest of it to me!

Close to two fingers of eggshell white foam, dense but some much larger bubbles at the point of pour, dimples more like deep valleys, settling into a fairly thick mist across the surface, the lacing is haphazard but clings well where it is. Rich golden orange hued liquid with a more yellowish aura, not hazy but does have a mild translucency, good amount of super tiny bubbles streaming upwards but you have to get close to see them. The nose has some salted pretzel and grains before yielding to tar, black earth, tangerine to mandarin orange citrus, pine pitch, mild flowers and peach, apricot fruit, seems to want to push deeply into the nostrils but not so as to disturb anyone. In the mouth it’s full-bodied with some prickle but a generally creamy mouthfeel, noticeably sweet with powerful pink grapefruit, tangelo, mandarin orange citrus as well as bread dough, pine, wheat germ and lemongrass. The carbonation keeps fluffing the pillow. The fruit is also sweetly tropical with pineapple, mango, nectarine, white peach flavors. Not much hoppy bite given it’s a DIPA and all, the malty smoothness blossoms through the finish. Yeah, maybe a touch warm but not getting any real alcoholic heat. Sweetness salves all wounds.

A: Hazy Golden Straw Hue, Passes Some Light, Very Thin White Head Ring, Some Lacing

S: Earthy, Clay, Mild Citrus

T: Orange Juice, Mildly Malty

M: Mediocre Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Mildly Citrus

Overall, I dont know if it is the most mildly balanced DIPA or a faux IPA with orange juice mixed in...make a decision and get back to me because whatever is playing the part of a DIPA is not cutting it and should be let go.

Poured from their 12oz bottle...

Appearance - Pours 2+ fingers of creamy dense golden foam, body is a gorgeous unfiltered golden orange amber, nice lacing after each quaff.

Smell - Wow, literally like a dream-sicle, vanilla, orange, light carmel, tropical fruits, some sweet candied grapefruit peel, very lite wheat and yeast. And while drinking this, you actually get a significant banana-bubble bum nose, wild stuff her, wild = good

Taste - Huge sweet citrus right off the bat, orange, blood orange, ruby red grapefruit, a good amount of yeast, now some banana esters, tropical fruits and lite vanilla in the background, sweetness of citrus and lite carmels, finishes with orange peel and some pith.

Mouthfeel - Medium mouthfeel, medium carb that provides some crisp edges at the sides of the tongue, quite smooth, cream-soda-esque.

Overall - Not what I expected from a DIPA, very unique, and very delicious if you like citrus and tropical fruit flavors. If I were blindfolded I would guess the style as an imperial hefeweizen, if such a thing exists. I personally like these flavors and am really enjoying this, great complexity, good balance, alcohol very well hidden - glad I got a 6xer of this, highly recommend. *You definitely get the yeast and sediment flavoring this, in a good way imho.
