First had: not sure, but just recently revisited it from a bottle given to me by a neighbor.

Clearish, copper pour into a Lost Abbey teku (no reason), a finger or so of frothy white head receded to a thin layer and left spots of lacing on the glass. Toasted grainy bread aroma, light piney hops, touch of earth. Bready and earthy up front in the taste, pale malts for a slight sweetness, balanced with bitter pine hops and notes of citrus rind. A little dry and stale. Light-medium body, moderate carbonation, decent overall, but nothing great. Typical Stoudts sub-mediocrity.

Continuing on in my Pennsylvania project:

Into a pint glass:

A: clear moderately dark amber colored body leaving a large foamy four finger white head that speckled the sides of the pint glass with respectable spider web lacing. The head died to some nice lumpy valleys.

S: sweet yet brought in a slight hoppy after-smell (if that's a word). Some nice breadiness comes ever so slightly in as the beer warmed.

T: pretty much the same with some nice citrus aspects that came out, gentle yet inviting for more sips.

M: light to medium with nothing harsh on the tongue. It was very sessionable.

O: for my first one from Stoudt's, I am thoroughly impressed with this one and can't wait to sample more from them. This was exceptionally well done.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours slightly hazy golden with a thick white head and a moderate amount of visible tiny bubbles in the beer. The head retreats slowly. There's some lacing left on the side of the glass. There's a floral aroma from the hops. I also pick up some of the bready smell from the malt. The taste follows the nose, but then goes beyond that. The floral hop flavors are balanced with come citrus peel and hop spiciness. The breadiness from the malt also comes through. The body is light to medium with moderate carbonation. The finish is slightly dry. The drinkability is high. This is a very good beer.

This is a great IPA. It is very light colored almost golden. The nose is a typically hoppy IPA aroma but its fairly weak and leaves something to be desired. The taste on the other hand is outstanding. A lot of hop flavor but very very smooth. There are fruity elements to it as well. Low carbonation which I like. I would recommend this beer.

A-Pours a clear dark cider hue. Head is respectable. Dies off from its original inch-high statue, but it does maintain half its height. It also laces with much consistency.

S-Sweetness wins out in the nose. The aroma is not very intense. I get caramel and sweet bread with light chords of floral hops. Stresses a mantra of 'subtle balance'. I want a bit more here.

T-The flavor is more impressive than the nose. Hops are flowery but hey also have some fair citrus flesh and even some lemony zing. The malt is toasted white bread and lemon tart. Still a bunch of balance, but the hops are more intense and lively.

M-Lighter bodied with some creaminess. Bubbles are standard. Sessionable.

O/D-Decent price, but the beer is far from memorable. Another serviceable Pale Ale. Maybe this was hanging on the shelf to a bit too long?

Pours a bright copper with a finger of head. The nose certainly has a stronger hoppiness than most APAs. The flavor is crisp with a mild maltiness and clean hoppy finish. This a an excellent example of an APA - certainly the flagship beer from Stoudt's Brewing.

On-tap at Rattle ‘n Hum, New York, NY

A: The beer is clear yellowish amber in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a thin off white head that has very good retention properties and consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of fruity yeast in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of fruity yeast along with notes of pale malts and a slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels a bit more than light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is a good beer for the style because it’s easy to drink and has a good amount of flavors.

Thanks to tone77 for this beer!

The beer pours a bright orange golden in color. There is an inch of creamy, thick and foamy head that is off-white in color.

The aroma is light tropical fruit and citrus over a subtle bed of malt.

The taste is light and fresh, floral and citrus over a light caramel malt, with a tangy and then bitter finish.

The beer is light in the mouth, with just the right amount of carbonation, and finishes crisp and dry. This is a nice easy drinker.

Poured from bottle into mug pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a lighter golden color with a medium white head. The head faded relativly fast leaving a lighter amount of lacing.
Smell – The smell is of barley malt as well as hints of caramel. Mixed with these are some floral and citrus hop aromas. They are lighter overall, but blend well.
Taste – The taste begins a little sweeter with a bready base. Toward the middle some of the sweetness fades as a light citrus hop flavor comes to the tongue. At the end a lighter bready flavor mixed with the citrus linger on the tongue and leave a refreshing, crisp, flavor on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is light to average in nature with the carbonation being on the higher side. The thinner body and higher carbonation both create and enhance the easy drinking style of the brew.
Overall – Good easy drinking brew with a good set of flavors. While the flavors and aromas are lighter in nature (one of the reasons it is so easy drinking) they all meld well and create a nice brew.

Unlike many APAs, this one is actually pale, i.e., gold, and not auburn. Sticky, white, two-finger head leaves plenty of lacing down the pint glass. Light, fruity hops couple with some biscuity malts for an all around spot on aroma. The citric nature of the hops are undoubtedly American, however, its mild overall nature and somewhat buttery malt is reminiscent of an EPA. This is a medium-bodied pale ale with a semi-dry finish. Restrained but lingering bitterness. I admit a little bias – I think this brewery is fantastic and this offering is no exception. Like other beers from Stoudts, their pale ale is not over-the-top; it's modest and exceptionally well-crafted within its style. I highly recommend a fresh bottle.

A - Very light gold. Just a hue darker than your average Lager.

A - Soft. There's come citrus, but not enough. I understand that with a low ABV beer, hops can very quickly crush the palate and take time to mellow. However, the aroma is what sells a beer, regardless of strength. This beer could have really set itself apart with a bigger, more flowing and succulent aroma.

T - Soft malts and a touch of caramel. Not exceptional. Still, very clean and flavorful. There's no grainy bite in the finish, no grass.

M - Lean, but it doesn't finish too dry.

O - Great session beer. But when more interesting offerings are on tap, it's difficult to stick with this one or regularly return to it. I do wish it were more regularly available in the area because this is a perfect "anytime" beer, and something beer geeks and BMC abusers can equally enjoy.

This was a review I wrote on the draft version a while back?

This beer has been on draft at my local bar for a while and is actually a very good pale ale. One of the better ones I've had.

Appearance is light straw, active carbonation and a little cloudy, not too much.

Aroma is a perfect combination of light malt and citrus hops. Very inviting.

Flavor is good, what it should be for the style. Good mix of malt and hops while being very refreshing. The low abv makes it an easy drinker.

Overall a great pale ale and one I'll continue to enjoy as long as I see it.

The cask was also very good with all the features that you find in a cask ale. OVerall very good.

On tap at the Village Draft House.

Pours a hazy orange with a soft, white head that has good retention. The nose has an intense floral, citrusy, grapefruity aroma. The flavor is intensely bready and biscuity up front followed by a balanced citrusy hop character that complements the malt well. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, smooth, and well carbonated.

This is a nicely balanced, drinkable, enjoyable beer. The malt character is solid and the hops are intense and complementary. I would definitely have this APA again.

Reviewing the Stoudts American Pale Ale from Stoudts Brewing Company out of Pennsylvania.
Score: 50

No bottling date. Enjoyed 02/10/12 at The Cowbell in New Orleans. This restaurant is not exactly located in the best part of town -- it was bad enough that three different cab companies refused to send a cab driver to pick us up for whatever reason (thankfully the chef drove us back to the hotel) -- but the burgers are absolutely seeking out if you can get there and back in the middle of the day. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Pours two fingers of fluffy white frothy head. Semi transparent golden/honey orange color. Settles into a half foamy layer that then slowly recedes into thin layer. Below average soapy lacing. 3/5

Smell: Old earth, bitter hops, maltiness, stale citrus. 2/5

Taste: Stainless steel and hops. A little orange citrus and dirt/earthy hops upfront, but a strong metallic taste on the midpalate that kinda lingers in the finish overwhelms any of the other flavors in the beer, effectively wiping them away. Lingers with a bitter, slightly acidic metal flavor. Metal mellows out as the beer layers per time, turn to old, dirty oranges. No wait, I spoke to soon. As Jack Black famously remarked, "no one can destroy the metal." 1.5/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Oily mouthfeel. Bitter, stainless steel finish. 2/5

Overall: While the restaurant's burgers were absolutely amazing, this beer was bad enough to potentially ruin your food if you were to consume them simultaneously. Why do I get the feeling this beer was out of date? You can only blame the brewery for this since they refuse to date their bottles.

Recommendation: Avoid this one like the plague, but certainly eat at the Cowbell.

Pairings: The sink drain.

Cost: $6 for a 12 oz beer at the restaurant.

Poured into an imperial pint glass. Glass of cold water on the side to sip from periodically.

Appearance: As poured the beer is a clear bright golden orange color with a 1 & 1/2” off white head that recedes slowly, at first leaving some lacing but not a lot. The beer is filled with some nice streams of carbonation and sipping leaves some interesting lacing for much of the beer.

Smell: The aroma is not strong but it definitely contains some hops with citrus and floral character, and the beer has a touch of caramel, and some bready malt.

Taste: The flavors are much as I expected from the nose and are also a bit more assertive. There is some bready character and a touch of caramel that plays well with the citric hops and the pervasive bitterness that is restrained but definitely there.

Mouthfeel: The mouth feel is on the light side of medium bodied with good carbonation. The finish is medium long with a touch of dryness and fruitiness.

Drinkability and Overall Impression: This is a drinkable beer for when you want to entertain friends and have an evening of good food, good beer, and good conversation. Assertive enough that you know it is there but not so assertive that it distracts you from the important stuff. Just the thing for when you want something light and refreshing. My overall impression is that this is a good, well-made beer well suited for an evening session of low ABV drinking and enjoyment with friends. I’ve had it before and I’ll be having it again. I like having a beer in the fridge that I can turn to when I want something with good flavor and relatively low ABV.

This beer was poured into a glass, it has a gold color body with a little bit of head that lays down quickly to a thin lace. The smell is sweet malts and some pine hops. The taste is exactly like the smell, malts up front then the hops come through. Very nice mouth feel, refreshing and smooth. Overall this is a good beer.

Boy, looking at my deviation from the norm, I've been grumpy, 15/16 have been below the masses average. Another victim? I hope not. Thanks to stormking47 for this extra. Split with my wife as a starter batch for the evening.

Poured into a cut little glass being christened after a recent release, it's a dense, middling orange. Nose is promising, pale malts are nice but cut by dewy grasses & mild citrus.

Stoudts American Pale Ale is American through & through, there ought to be a twangy gee-tar playing in the background whilst I'm swigging this. Very nice light malts twine hands with the citric hops. Gentle bittering comes through, quickening in the finish. Touch of bakery-fresh bread. Easier to drink than ice-tea served by a girl in daisy dukes on the front porch in Jul-eye; six ounces won't last four shakes of a hound dog's leg.

Who needs complexity? This is just a good, solid, simple pale ale. You screw this up, it sucks. You make it well, it's this. Very good beer & my third winner from Stoudts. Keep them comin'.

Pours a nice dark golden color with a two-finger pearl white head. Really nice lacing and head retention for the style. Didn't get much from the aroma. A bit of a grainy, toasted aroma with a hint of pine. Flavor beings with a nice, sweet, toasty malt. Subtle hints of toffee and caramel mix well with the grain flavor. Ends with a very quick hit of pine hops. Really creamy and refreshing mouthfeel, feels a lot thicker than the flavor profile suggests. Overall, a solid pale ale with a nice little flavor, but certainly not a memorable beer of this style.

Stoudts American Pale Ale has a medium, egg-shell-colored creamy head and a mostly clear, amber appearance with lots of lacing left down the glass. The aroma is mainly of grapefruit citrus and a hint of malt sweetness and clean water. Taste is of mild, vibrant (as the website says) citrus/grapefruit flavor, with accompanying sweetness. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Stoudts American Pale Ale finishes crisp, refreshing, mostly dry, and easy drinking. This is a wonderful pale ale.

A: Bottle has best by 12/11/11 poured into pint glass. Bright golden color with 2 fingers of head. Very clear.

S: Toasty sweet malts with slight hint of piney hops at the end.

T: Follows the nose. Toasty malts up front followed by a really nice pine bitterness on the back end. Pretty well balanced and very crisp. Nice dry finish.

M: Medium mouthfeel. Refreshing.

O: Another tick mark to why this is my favorite style. Nice malt presence with a good hop bitterness to it. Nothing is over powering and everything works well.

Poured 12 oz into pint glass.

A- pours dull Orange in color. Slight haze, with white quarter inch head. Sticky lace on glass.

S- burst of floral hop aroma up front. Fades to subtle sweet malt smell.

T- nice hop flavors. Floral, grassy hop flavors from the beginning to the middle. Bitterness starts to come through, but cut into with sweetness from caramel malts. Ends sweet but mixes well with the hops.

M- medium body. Moderate carbonation. A little oily in the mouth.

O- solid ipa. A little sweet for me, but still a good drink. I could drink a couple of these pretty easily!

A - Not very much head only a slight white layer that turns to a nice lace ring. Color is a nice amber yellow, average for a pale.

S - Smell is very inviting pale malts and piney hops. Slightly sweet smelling malts as well.

T - Huh its pretty good just not great. I do get some hops so it is balanced and the level of pale malts and grains are balanced so they are not very aggressive. Good.

M - Light to medium. I even get a bit of lingering hop flavor.

Overall it was a very good pale which I assume was fresh since they got cases of these recently. Could use a bit more carbonation (head) and it would be pretty session able.

I poured this beer into my tumbler at 40 degrees. The beer was pale and poured a nice blond head. The lacing was very good also. The beer had a hoppy smell and really hoppy taste. Way to much in my opinion for a American pale ale. The beer also had a bit of a soapy taste we thought. Will not buy again.

Poured into a pint glass. Reviewed alongside Troegs Pale Ale.

A: Mostly clear golden amber color with a two-finger, creamy, white head that lasted more than a few minutes. Nice lacing.

S: Fruity and hoppy smell. Floral aroma. Herbal tea.

T: Moderate sweetness and light bitterness up front. Slightly more noticeable bitterness in the finish, but still not much. Not enough bitterness to balance. Not what I was expecting from the nose.

M: Light to medium bodied with little to no carbonation. Slightly disappointing.

O: This beer looked and smelled great, but the flavor wasn't what I was hoping for based on the nose. The carbonation was almost nonexistent. I liked the Troegs slightly better.

Dull golden amber color. Slim, tiny-bubbled head with an average retention. The aroma is sweet, hoppy and citrusy with a bit of pine. The taste is average; light malt with a hoppy back. Very indicative of an American Pale, but a bit bland. Crisp with a medium body. The bitter finish settles on the back of the tongue with citrus and a hint of peach.
