Pours a dark cola brown with some chalky haze, little to no head. Great barrel notes - vanilla, oak and booze, lightly nutty and chocolaty, faint hazelnut and coffee. Roasted nuts, caramel, dark fruit, chocolate backed by oak, vanilla and booze. Very dry and tannic on the palate, fuller side of medium bodied. Slightly one dimensional, but hard to give a beer with this nose and barrel taste too low a score.

Pours a slightly hazy deep dark brown color with a faint ruby highlight and a smallish tan head that quickly recedes to a cap on top. Smells of sweet malt and dark sugars with a hint of fruit and a bit of roast and a hint of ash. There's a subtle vanilla oaky aroma that reminds you this is in fact barrel aged. The flavor is sweet and sugary with a bit of cherry and orange fruitiness. There's a bit of dark sugars as well as the barrel notes coming through. A touch of alcohol and a hint of vanilla finish us off nicely. Medium body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick fruity mouthfeel. This is an interesting beer that really grew on me through the glass. I liked it and would partake of it again if given the opportunity, but I wouldn't search high and low for this.

Another opportunity courtesy of Mr. Masters. Thank you buddy.

Into my snazzy Tired Hands glass...also ala Alex...she pours a dirty brown with some rusty reddish highlights along the edges. Head is short lived, leaving a thin brown collar. Lacing is minimal.

Smells a bit of those generic caramel blocks that sometimes make themselves seen round the holidays. Mild splash of vanilla as well, but it's mainly a one trick pony on my proboscis. Some peripheral heat rises up as well....like that cop who saw your wife traveling way too fast on the Beltline and gave that virgin driving record a little bit of the who's your father. Zap!

Taste is slightly more complex than the nose. Caramel malts again loom large. Some brown sugar and cinnamon come follow after. The whiskey imparts a flash of heat of the finish that lingers along the back of the tongue. Tastes rather unsurprisingly like a middle of the road brown ale that has been doused with the whiskeys.

Seeing as this is a brown ale, the lack of structure and body is somewhat understandable. It's light and thin and the barrel aging likely only serves to further those qualities. The whiskey bite is sharp, but not altogether hot. Doesn't drink like a 9 percent beer..kind of surprised actually.

I cannot stress enough how appreciative I am of all the great beer that I have been fortunate enough to try through the generosity and kindness of many traders here on BA. While I wouldn't quite put this beer into the great category, I also understand I'd likely never have had the opportunity had it not been for Alex. With that poorly constructed sentence out of the way...thanks!

Big thanks goes out to chase2634 for sending me this one as an extra in a recent trade! Shared this one during the One Year Anniversary of My Wreck Tasting! Served from growler into a Crooked Stave ‘Crooked Line’ tulip. Poured a deep red brown with a half finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, cinnamon, wood, sweet alcohol, and caramel. The flavor was of sweet malt, wood, sweet alcohol, caramel, and caramel hop. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. The whiskey barrel was definitely making itself known throughout this brew. This really added a nice level of complexity to the brew but other than that, there really wasn’t that much going on which was unfortunate. Glad I got the chance to tick this one and share it with others, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to try it again however.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into my Deschutes Brewery snifter.

Minimal, microbubble head with a deep brown color and ruby fringes.

Smells of carmelized sugar, vanilla, dark fruits oak and apple. Aroma finishes with a whiskey and cola smell.

Taste starts with a thin sweet sweetness full of vanilla and oak. Finishes a little dry and almost tannic, with mild bitterness at the end. It's almost as if the malt backbone of the beer cannot support the strong flavors induced by the barrels.

Mouthfeel is smooth and syrupy with a good amount of carbonation for the style.

Overall this is a good beer. The smell is good but the taste can't deliver. It is complex but a little thin. A nice sipper as it warms up, but would be much better with a stronger malt profile.

Pouts black with a tiny, white head on it. Nose is beautiful - sweet milk chocolates, bourbony molasses, and hints of vanilla. The taste isn't as rich in flavor as the nose suggests. Opens up with sugary malts that fade to a full, carbonated vanilla flavor. These move on to a little bit of boozy bourbon and some more chocolate malt. Not über flavorful. The mouth is watery And a little thin. Overall, this is decent but nothing too mind shattering or different. Recommended if you like brown ales and a splash of bourbon.

12oz bottle for $5.50. Bottled on 060512; Best By 020513 printed on the neck.
Served at room temperature into a tulip. Sampled 30JUL12

[A] Upon uncapping, the head slowly climbs up the bottle's neck but comes to a frothy stop a half inch above the rim. On the pour, the medium light brown head is foamy but not very compact. Retention is low yet a creamy foamy collar remains throughout. The body is an extremely dark ruby with glimpses of clarity along the edges and while looking through the center of the glass. Random ribbons of lace take hold. Nice look.

[S] Whiskey barrel dominates the nose. A bit of earthy spice (similar to rye and caraway) add complexity to the grain bill. Some cola-like sweetness...root beer even.

[T] Oaky vanilla, perhaps some faint toasted coconut. Warming alcohol from mid palate on, transforming to heat on the finish.

[M] Very fine and tingling with gently expansive effervescence. The body is light yet semi thick and creamy. Not spectacular but it works well with the flavor profile.

[O] I'd guess the ABV to be close to 7% even though the prominent barrel influence makes this beer seem like it's closer to 9%. (The ABV isn't indicated on the label.) This is a well crafted brew and I very much like the idea of barrel treatments for (relatively) low alcohol brews.
