Poured from a 750ml corked and caged bottle into a goblet
A: Pours a completely opaque chocolate colored black. There is a decent tan head which fades to a thin, oily cap and ring of foam.
S: Some notes of Belgian yeast, clove and estery alcohol soar over a deep, roasted malt aroma. A little bit of fruit mixes in with the dark malt scents.
T: An interesting combination of flavors. The roasted flavors are more prominent than the Belgian flavors; the opposite of the aroma. Bittersweet chocolate, plum and fig. Alcohol is fairly well hidden, even as it warms. Finish moves from stout to Belgian spices which linger.
M: Smooth and creamy. A little sticky and next to no alcohol heat.
O: Great beer. Pretty much the best of an imperial stout and Belgian ale. Well hidden alcohol makes for a surprisingly potent drink.

I picked up this bomber on a whim, because the price wasn't bad. Served in a pint glass, it poured a dark rich almost black color with an impressive 1/2 inch head of rich brown foam. I was surprised at the amount of carbonation that hit my tongue on the initial sip making it super crisp. I tasted notes appropriate to stouts, coco and tobacco being the most predominate. Definitely impressed with this beer. Check it out.

A: Dark black with a foamy dark cocoa-colored head; fairly quickly dissipating head and decent lacing
S: So roasty and boozy and malty; lots of dark fruits, bitter dark chocolate, and coffee beans with some sweet bready vanilla and toffee aromas; an underlying booziness persists
T: A bit more subdued but balanced flavors; lots more chocolate--like tootsie rolls--with some subtle coffee and dark fruits lingering beneath
F: Medium body and creamy but a bit thin for what it is
O: This is a balanced big beer; not nearly as boozy and overpowering as it should be considering the abv; me likey

Serving from a large bomber of 25.4 oz. Not sure how they came up with that size - but it's better than the usual - bomber of 22 oz. This is from Weyerbacher, one of my favorite breweries for many reasons.
This is their "Belgian style Imperial Stout". I wish some of these people on this review for this beer - would read the damn label. It says - just what it is:
"Belgian style Imperial Stout"
No it is not an Imperial Stout. It says so on the label.
No it is not a Belgian style ale. It says so on the label.
What it is - is a great drinkable Imperial Stout without the heaviness, without the heavy mouthfeel. With the - lightness and the OUTSTANDING finish of the Belgian style ale.
This is a great combination of styles that work together in concert. At first I was disappointed that it lacked the substance of the traditional Imperial Stout at the finish, but as you sample it - you recognize that you gain the substance and mouthfeel of the Imperial Stout up front, coupled with the velvety light finish of the Belgian style ale at the finish.
Actually, it's the finish on this beer that makes it is so appealing.
It reminds me of a great Chianti, the finish just disappears into a delicious vapor, but with this beer, it vaporizes into a delicious carmel bourbon vapor...And that my friend, is good.
Definitely not an IMPERIAL STOUT, nor a BELGIAN STYLE, but a happy marriage.
Imperial up front, Belgian at the end.
No it will never replace my DORIS THE DESTROYER or YETI as a reference Imperial Stout, nor my THREE PHILOSOPHERS or as a reference Belgian Ale...
This is a well crafted beer that is a well executed voyage to combine two desirable aspects of two wonderful styles - in one beer. And I'm smiling all the way to the refrigerator to get another!
Well recommended. Enjoy.
