Poured into weizen glass, thick sustained fluffy head. Orange copper color with more than ample carbonation. Sharp, fruity taste with no bitterness. Tastes more like a weizen than a dunkel....small amount of sediment at the bottom of the bottle, but i "swished" it german style and poured into the glass. A good example of true Bavarian weizen...

A German customer brought this in last fall after returning from business overseas. I put it in the cellar and forgot about it until yesterday. Most of the beer that I cellar and lay down are the types of beers that are well suited for it - Belgian Strong Ales, Barleywine, Imperial Stouts, etc. so I was a little worried about forgetting it.
Alas, the bottle was in perfect shape (label was all in German with no sticker or markings, so I was sure that it was not an imported version. I had never see this type of Konig Ludwig here in the States and their standard Weiss is pretty run of the mill, even with its provenance and history behind it.
This beer drank extremely well - poured a great, aromatic head and was incredibly balanced. It has a very appealing nutty, fresh baked bread nose to it. It went don't way too easy and I was quickly saddened once it sank in that this was a one-time beer for me. I hope that it eventually either gets imported, or if that is already in place, makes it way down South.

Cloudy unfiltered hazy orange with a large fluffy head. Good head retention with some lace left on the glass.
Sweet wheat aroma, mild spices, light hint of nutty smoke.
Tastes of smoked banana and nutty wheat. Light hint of caramel. A smooth beer with a nice crisp grain finish. After a few sips I get a somewhat bitter finish which compliments the sweetness of the beer nicely.
Medium bodied beer that I could drink all day. The beer is very well balanced and simply tastes great. I gave my girlfriend a sip who normally is hesitant to try anything to do with Germany and she loved it. If you have the chance, try this beer.

Cloudy, unfiltered orange to light, chocolate-brown colour that forms a large off-white head that is a fluffy foam texture. The retention is quite good and some lacing on the glass is visible.
A nice wheat aroma that is backed up with a strong banana and clove smell plus some mild spices.
Banana & to a lesser extent cloves are here but are not as noticeable as in the smell. They are partially masked by the sweet caramel flavour but this is still an excellent beer to drink, helped by the almost bitterless finish.
Light on the palate for a dark beer, it's on the light side of medium bodied but still very smooth and surprisingly crisp & refreshing.
A well-balanced beer that is great tasting and goes down really well. It is up there with the best of the style I have sampled thus far.

Surprisingly clear, light coppery body covered with thick, long lasting nearly white head that sticks to walls before finally fades out to a soapy film. The nose starts as wheat perceived as grain but as the beer warms up banana and bubblegum emerge, while further sniffing reveals apple-like fruitiness and clove phenols. The beer is sweet on the palate with malted wheat and some bread crust flavor probably derived from melanoidin-rich (Vienna or Munich) malt and ends with very low hoppy bitterness. However, the flavor is rather simplistic and poorly represents the style. Effervescent and initially very airy and light on the palate due to exceedingly high carbonation, the beer becomes creamy and fluffy later on due to the wheaty texture. (500 ml, best before 18. August 2011, into tulip).
In short: A rather bland representative of the style. Although a self-proclaimed king (König) nothing is royal in this one.

Got this at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam.
From a bottle into a weizen glass.
APPEARANCE: Pours a super large 3+ finger thinner off-white head. No real carbonation evident. Colour is a lighter brown, perhaps sienna or russet. Actually poured relatively clear for a dunkelweizen, then quickly turned cloudy after a few seconds. Head quickly dissipates into a film cap, which stays the entire time, and leaves some good lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Wheat malt and bit of sweet caramel and toffee. OK, but there's also something a little foul there that I can't put my finger on. Smelly shoes or something along those lines. Not a fan.
TASTE: Wheat malt and not much else. A sweet caramel malt aftertaste lingers pretty long and is not all that pleasant. Pretty one dimensional and boring.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy smooth going down and finishes very sticky, really coating the mouth completely. A bit too sticky for me, but some might enjoy that kind of extreme.
OVERALL: Looks good and feels alright, but everything else was at least disappointing and maybe even a little off. Not all that enjoyable, which made it not very drinkable either. There are definitely much better examples out there. Pass.
