A- This beer has a warm brown body with a strong wave of tiny bubbles and a thick mousy head that last and last. The head is even sitting in the bottom of the glass after the beer is finished.

S- The smell of wheat and yeast has a mellow banana and fresh ripe pears even from the pour. The notes of green hops come through in the finish and they are pretty subtle.

T- The smooth soft wheat flavor has a slight toasted wheat note and some dark bread crust flavors. There is some nice banana and pear flavors that blend into the light green hops at the finish.

M- The medium-full mouthfeel has a nice fizz in the finish that fills out the mouthfeel and cleans the finish.

D- This beer has a big aroma with a softer flavor but they both have some good complexity. This beer is a meal in a glass and is very filling. With a flood of bland wheat beers on the market I forgot how great wheat beers can really taste.

This is my first dunkel weizen. Poured into a Ayinger glass, hazy yellowish/brown color with a huge head and carbonation. I was figuring a dark color, but I guess not. Lacing is very present with a medium feel. I really like the taste for a dunkel. I could drink a few of these, for a dunkel weizen, it's very drinkable.

A: Huge frothy head that fades quickly with rusty orange and very hazy color, its a little too hazy from the unfiltered but maybe a little too much

N: Nose has some sweet and sour notes a little yeasty wheaty and Belgian wit like

T: Taste starts with rich dark malts, very similar to their oktoberfest but with more butter, banana, light fruit, some yeast, a slight citrus and sour apple, airy and light but lots of flavor, the unfiltered part gives it some earthiness and bitter character

M: Mouth has lots of carbonation and buttery but a slight smooth thickness

F: Finish is light but dry and a little bitter with lots of malt that blanket the tongue, a slight sour apple helps finish

Final thoughts: Its a good drinking beer, less malty and more fruity and Bavarian style than the Oktoberfest which is my favorite Oktoberfest. But this is a great summer drinking beer.

Thick off white head, strong carbonation - pour slow. Good wheat, with expected slight yeast overtones. Nice maltiness, finishes smooth. The ABV is 5.8%. $3.49 for 500 ml.

Presentation: 17 oz euro brown bottle with no freshness date.

Appearance: Hazy amber with a creamy looking off white lace.

Smell: Soft and fruity with hints of banana and granny smith apples ... trace of clove also in the nose.

Taste: Crisp and smooth with an assertive carbonation ... a soft wheat flavour and mouth feel hold the medium body together. Pretty much on the dry side with lots of fruit character (apples and banana), a rounded tartness and a clove like spicy flavour helps to balance a little. Hops are vitualy invisible ... long dry semi grainy finish helps to wrap this brew up.

Notes: A well built dunkel hefe-wezien ... quite drinkable to say the least. One of the better imported dunkel hefe-wezien. Did some one say lunch time brew ... pair it up with a smoked ham and munster cheese on rye.

500 Mll bottle, no freshness dating, I dont think the German's are too interested in this type of helpful consumer friendly info. Pours a muddy shade of medium brown, with a slight oily glaze. The head is huge, retentive, soft, frothy and fluffy. Leaves moderate daggers of lace. Nose is chock full of bananas, yeast and dunkel weisse goodness. Tasty offering, has that nice mix of fruityness, yeastyness and dark bready wheat notes that make this a favorite style. Nice brew from Ayinger.

Appears a dark, amber toned orange with a white cap that slowly fades into bits of spotted lacing left around the glass.
Smell is of orange, apricot, clove, banana, vanilla cream, and Graham crackers.
Taste is of the aromas with a yeasty, bready, banana wafer flavor coming through.
Mouthfeel is spritzy, sweet up front, tangy, medium bodied, and semi dry.

Pours a cloudy light brown brew.

Smell is the banana, spice and cloves of a good German wheat beer. Mild perfume is also in the smell.

Taste is sweet and fruity with a solid wheat base character. Banana and bubble gum flavors. The big grain flavor of this helps clean the palette. No bitterness at all.

Big Mouthfeel, solid wheat thickness and bitey carbonation.

Very drinkable brew would go great with a spicy sandwich.

Murky orangish brown appearance. Nice looking head of about 1/2 inch and beige tinted white in color. Retention? Pretty good. Nice lemmon pepper and clove mixed in with some tangy wheat malt and darkened barley on the nose. The flavor is spicy, yet refreshing. A little banana clove action. And the slight chocolate and dark malt tones are held in check nicely and add the subtleties need for this style. This nicely carbonated brew has a medium full body and a partially dry finish. Nicely done dunkel weizen.

500ml bottle purchased from BevMo in Menlo Park, CA.

Pours a muddied orange-amber colour, heavily hazed, with a solid froth of white foam. Body is very fluid, and seems light, but the haze, and the fine carbonation gives it a distinctive weight. Lacing is weak, but forms in patches. Overall, it looks pretty decent.

Nose is a little earthier and spicier than I expected. There's no big banana characters, and no classic clove: instead there's a very organic character, like freshly turned mulch, mingled with a peppery spice and some other estery characters: I get vanilla and starfruit. And yet, it manages still to feel like a German ale for some reason. It's confusing.

Taste is pleasant. Smooth, clear wheat characters give a crisp centre of the palate surrounded by sweet softness all around. Some peppery, earthy and leathery notes come out later, and even some of those banana phenols missing on the palate seem to appear towards the finish. It's quite pleasant.

Feel is smooth and light. Not bad at all.

Overall, this is different, but very pleasant. It's perhaps somewhere between a hefe and a dunkel, and yet also manages to hold very different characters from many of the examples I've had in the past. I was very interested in it as a result.

Is music and beer the new fad? I have my tunes set on Depeche Mode as I'm ready to open this bottle. On to the beer:

Oh my, that smells good. Whoa, slow down....okay. Lots of bubbly head on top this carmel brown beer. Decent head retention. The nose...apples, major spicy phenols. Not as intense or aromic as it was when I opened it, but still good.

Spicer than the usual dunkleweiss, and I like meself a spicy wiessbier. Caramel dipped apples merge with a pinch of ground clove. Hints cinnamon too. Light brush-up of alcohol towards the back. Wheat dries the palate, and keeps it dry in the aftertaste.

Very good halfway in, but the second half was merely good. I'll go with the latter on this one to determine it overall.

Bottle purchased from Green's on Ponce in Atlanta.

Pours a cloudy amber and orange color that's surprisingly light for the style but looks pretty good when the light hits it. The head is two fingers of white foam that eventually recedes into a thin cap on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of loads of bananas, half fresh and half brown, along with smoothly integrated clove aromas. Also present are mild amounts of wheat twang and breadiness.

Tastes similar to how it smells, although not quite as robust. Wheat twang and banana flavors kick things off and are backed by mild amounts of breadiness. Midway through the sip the spices come into play - there may be coriander in there but the clove is front and center. The spices carry through to a solidly crisp ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall I thought this was a solid beer, although I feel as though it was more of a hybrid between a hefe and a dunkel. Still, well worth a shot.

The beer pours a translucent amber color with a massive head with the texture frothy and the color and off white, the lace forms a fine shade to cover the glass from view. Nose is quite complex with aromas of malt, citrus, wheat or bread dough, sweet as it the start with the top middling in mouth feel. Finish is sparsely acidic, pleasantly hopped, dry long lasting aftertaste and all in all a very drinkable beer.

A: Poured a hazy, and slighty burnt tangerine-orange with a massive 3 finger billowy eggshell white head that had great retention and lasted well into the drink falling to a soft, foamy layering. Visible carbonation was light.

S: On the nose was fresh lemons, bananas, a light yeatiness and soft wheat scents.

T: The initial flavor yielded a fresh lemony flavor that was wet, citrusy, and very smooth. There was some light banana bread with some spiciness against a soft wheat backing. Overall the flavor and palate was extremely smooth and clean.

M: very light, smooth, with a soft carbonation and a light tart lemony fade.

D: Drinkability was incredibly smooth, clean and great going down. A near perfect example per style.

Coppery amber and quite hazy with a big fluffy white cap that settled quickly to a short layer of fine bubbles. Lots of banana in the aroma, dry grain husk, cloves, bready yeast, brown sugar. Mild flavour, slight lemon with a bit of banana and malt sweetness. Spicy finish with a flash of bitterness and light apple tartness. Light bodied and quite dry, creamy carbonation. Decent overall and I really liked the aroma.

Color: Mild amber color with considerable cloudiness and a thick, foamy head.

Aroma: Clove esters show through in the nose with very weak banana esters. Malty.

Taste: Clove esters show upfront. Very smooth. A bit sweet. Malty. Simplistic.

Mouthfeel: Clove with a bit of dryness. Not much else though.

Verdict: A decent and drinkable dunkelweizen. I knock down a bit in score because I don't see the dunkel part of this beer (it's not very dark). Smell and taste are appetizing though. The ABV is low enough to make it a decent session ale.

I had this on tap at Ayingers Am Platzl in Munich on March 19, 2006.

A: Light-brown sugar colour, impressive white head.

S: Banana bread. Much breadier than their hefe, with less citrus.

T: Banana bread with a little spice and citrus, slightly sweet.

M: Moderate body & carbonation. Creamy.

D: Very good.

500 mL into Weissen glass

Color was a hazy straw brown. Light tan head. Left medium level of lacing.

Aroma was of clove and bananas (similar to a hefewissen). Taste was similar. Roasted fruits and nuts were present also.

Mouthfeel is smooth at first and then goes down creamy. It has a sticky aftertaste.

Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. $4 for a half liter is kinda steep, but I think it was worth it.

Hazy orange color with a thick light beige head. Some carbonation. This is darker in color than any German Wheat I have had so far. Fruity aroma. I was kind of unimpressed with the taste. There was a definite apple cider feel to it, but it really lacked follow-through. Probably the coolest bottle cap I have seen. What is in the trees, matryoshka dolls?

17oz bottle from the Coop for about $2.75.. poured into my New Belgium goblet.

2" head drops leaving little lacing atop a slightly hazy light amber brews.

Aroma is spicy with big notes of molasses... banana and clove... light bubblegum.

Flavor is the same as the aroma but with a long spicy banana finish.. nowhere near as sweet as the nose lets on... there are brown sugar notes... reminds me of bananas foster and pumpkin pie. Suprising light body.. but still higher than most traditional pale hefe's.

Good beer that I've only had one other time... tasty and very drinkable.

Color is a cloudy haze of brownish gold with a large loose head of puffed creamy foam that ever so slowly simmers to a light haze on top and has drippy lace in large stringy patches.

The smell of this thing is very lively, wow, its all over the place, funky as hell, smokey banana and smoked salmon or bacon, dull lemon, musty horse blanket, soft rubber, and feet. Yep, its funky and pungent and I love it. I need this in a insense form so I can light one and let the whole place smell like this. People would wonder what the hell I'm I cookin' or smokin'. I'd be great.

Taste is soft and mellow of banana and frothy malts, touch of lemon and clove, sweetness is light, citrus is flighty with a light but favorable carbonation with a mellow, nearly creamy medium body with a little touch of hop and dryness with clove hints in the finish. The yeast is showcased in this beer quite a bit, especailly in the smell, but with that aside its one fine easy drinkin' dunkel.

Aroma is strong and "wheaty" with a bit of an alcohol nip and a hint of citrus. Color is a cloudy, light brownish amber, translucent but not clear. Flavor is strongly wheaty, with just a whisper of citrus, no hoppy or bitter taste. It dances on the tongue as it goes down and leaves a pleasant aftertaste. I recommend it to all weizen fans.

Appearance – The head was nice and big with good retention and lacing, but the color is solid orange. Ist das eine dunkles?

Smell – Jahwohl – das ist eine dunkel weitzen. This one has a beautiful, monster yeast aroma that fills my nostrils with memories of Germany. The aroma is one-dimensional and awesome.

Taste – The flavor, on the other hand, didn’t deliver. The yeast all but left the building, and the dunkel aspect was nowhere to be found.

Mouthfeel – This is where most bad weizens fail, and this was no exception. Flat doesn’t begin to describe this one.

Sinkability – I can’t believe that this was made in Bayern.

500ml bottle from Gourmet Haus Staudt, no freshness date.

The body is an incredibly murky pale brownish-amber with ample suspended yeast and other particulates; it looks kind of awful, actually, but I guess it's to style. A small head forms and quickly recedes to a film.

The nose has plenty of signature weizen yeast banana-like esters along with quite a bit of caramelized malt, which creates a very appetizing bouquet. Spicy/medicinal phenols are fairly reserved here, buried behind the malt.

Spiciness is a bit more prevalent on the palate, up-front especially where I pick up a bit of white pepper and clove. Caramelized bananas soon take over, along with a mild butter toffee-like sweetness that segues into a clean and mild finish with very reserved bitterness. The body is fairly chewy for a sub-6% ABV beer, but it's still very refreshing. This is another winner from Ayinger, truly a great brewery.
