Poured from bottle into my "travel tulip". Purchased at Whole Foods in Metarie, LA. Pours a rusty orangey brown with nice off white head. Great banana and clove hefe yeast with a hint of some belgian type malts. Taste is smooth banana and caramel malt - it almost has a belgian dubbel caramel like note. Really nice...super smooth and lots of flavor. This is what to reach for if you want a proper dunkel.

Served from 500ml bottle with no freshness date. Poured into a weizen glass.
A-Pours a cloudy brown/gold. A large amount of head that drops rapidly. Lacing forms, but slips quickly down the side when tipped.
S-Sweet malts with banana.
T-Round malty sweetness followed by banana. I believe a previous reviewer thought it tasted like banana cream pie and that is an accurate description of what I'm getting here. Finishes with spicy (could be phenols?) hop bitterness.
M-Quite carbonated, but still a bit creamy. Nothing terribly special. A hint of warmth from the alcohol.
O-I really like this beer. I've enjoyed in the past and thought I had detected more of a caramel/almost toasted marshmallow in the finish. I didn't pick that up this time around, but it is an extremely enjoyable beer. I will go back to this when I'm craving a weisse.

Picked up a .5 L bottle and poured into a glass.
A: The head was nice and thick and color a very nice hazy yellowy/orange/bronze color.
S: the smell was a nice weiss-banana smell, better than expected.
T: this beer tastes almost exactly like it smells, which doesn't always happen. It was a much lighter tasting beer than I was expecting, which I somewhat expected based on its color.
M: very smooth on the palate, definitely doesn't have the full wheat impact that some weissebeers have.
O: overall this is a great beer. I would not hesitate to buy this beer again. I would almost say this tastes like a much "lighter" Schneider Aventinus beer, which isa fantastic beer in its own right. For a price of just over $3, you cannot go wrong giving this beer a chance.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a Schneider Weisse weizen glass.
Pours a murky/cloudy light brown colour. Not very dunkel.
Smells quite malty, with a hint of yeast.
Tastes very weizen-y, with less emphasis on the yeast than normal, making it sweeter, though not as dark as you'd expect from a dunkelweizen. Very slight bitter hop finish.
Overall a very nice wheat beer.

Straight pour from bottle into a Schnider Weiss weizen glass. A murky, hazy dull yellow with a honey quality. Nice 2+ finger head that stuck around for a bit. Smell is of bananas and some light fruits. Pick up some cloves and bread. Taste was not what I was expecting. A bit sweeter than anticipated. A hint of grapefruit and bubble gum add to the banana and wheat/earth tones. A unique and refreshing taste. Good balance with the hops. Feel was a bit dry and thin. Carbonation was lively. Overall- An interesting Dunkel. Like the blend of fruits and unique smell. Perhaps a bit too sweet on the tongue for my taste. Still a very enjoyable beer that has some different characteristics (sweet fruits and taffy, gum) that make it unique. Will have another one of these at some point. Good, not great-

Murky, dark, honey gold to light golden brown in an Erdinger weizen. Cascading carbonation shows no sign of abating below a three inch, pastel yellow meringue that settles but never dissipates. Lace forms thick patchy rings.
Nutty banana with some cloves and ripe cantaloupe. Bubblegum with lightly toasted grain waxes and wanes with each sip.
Overall, this is sweeter than expected, yet welcome. There is a light horse blanket flavor, with overripe bananas, tart apple and perhaps some coconut. The finish is subtle as are all the nuanced characteristics of this flavor profile.
A full body with jersey cotton texture, fine carbonation, and only a hint of alcohol.
This one is satisfying while relaxing and whiling away a cool, sunny, late summer afternoon.

A: Hazy to cloudy, brown-amber, with a towering off-white head; lingers OK, minimal lacing.
S: Fruity, with aromas of lemongrass & white pepper, and faint hints of clove and banana.
T: Wheat is center stage at first; but it yields to a melange of tart jam, cooked green-pepper, faint banana and bubblegum; and finally, a mild and slightly-bitter, but mostly citrus, hops finish.
M: Nicely carbonated. Moist and refreshing as it washes over the tongue, but dry enough to make you want more in the finish.
O: A very enjoyable Bavarian Dunkelweizen. The first time I had this was with a plate of Jaegerschnitzel at a local German restaurant, and it married perfectly with its native cuisine. I bought a bottle to try at home for this review, and was not disappointed.

I screwed up the proper pour technique into the pint glass....but never mind that.
Gold-caramel color. Good amount of head, left rings in my pint.
Has a nutty smell....hazel-nut as some have mentioned before. A bit of a buttery smell as well. Almost like a graham cracker but not as sweet.
When you first taste it, I want to say it reminds me of a banana cream pie. The taste then lapses into the hazel nut taste. Does not overpower the weisse taste.
The texture....hmmm. Carbonation tickles the tongue but is washed back with a smooth finish.
Really easy to drink if you're a weisse fan.

Look is lsightly hazy golden orange, frothy off-white head. Smell is banana, clove, wheat, chalky vanilla, and a hard to place sweet smell that perfectly melds with the banana. Slightly roasted banana, caramel, light clove and floral notes. Wheaty, dry, and soft.
Fantastic tasting at a reasonable price.

Appearance - Pours a cloudy darkened honey hie with a white 2 finger head, good retention and a resulting lace that's thick and semi-sticky.
Smell - Hints of caramel, ripened banana, hints of bubblegum and a faint clove note.
Taste - Predominately a light caramel and banana character battling it out for dominance, leaving room for a bit of bubblegum to poke through. The clove is less of a flavor and more of a presence that bites mid-taste and into the finish.
Mouthfeel - Light to medium body with an aggressive carbonation that bites at the lips and tongue.. A touch of diacetyl butteriness gives a it a smooth, gliding flow down the throat.
Overall - I'm not sure if I like this more than the Weihenstephaner dunkel, but it's close. I'd love to do a side by side, and I'd enjoy doing it. Us Americans have the one up on Europe so far as most ales are concerned, but we've yet to touch on the efforts of our Eastern comrades when it comes to hefes and dunkels. There's been some commendable attempts (Sierra's Kellerwies comes to mind), but we're not there yet. This dunkel is proof we've got a hell of a way to go.

I paid $2.89 for this and I already know I practically stole it. Poured into a snifter (Didn't feel like bringing out the Weizen glass).
I would like to note that this cap is absolutely beautiful. A nice road between a few buildings and some sort of tower (matching the label). World class precision for sure!
A - A light amber that looks almost as a polluted gold. A nice sized pale head sits atop the body. Poor retention and lacing.
S - Cloves, banana and bubblegum explode on my nose. I can also detect some wheat which adds some character. Just another great nose from Ayinger.
T - Wow this is a fantastic beer! Lots of soft flavors that coat the palette and refrain from overwhelming. Follows the nose perfectly with incredible smoothness. Rich fruits, ample spice and wheat blend for a fantastic experience. Bravo!
M - Big carbonation adds to the drinkability here. Super smooth with soft pleasures coating the palette.
O - I feel as if I have committed a crime buying this beer at such a price. I can say without doubt that I will be revisiting this on a regular basis.

Only 3.00 for 500ml of this world class beer!
Dark amber just below the off white head (four fingers at pour, slow reduction). Light amber at the bottom. Cloudy in appearance, mild carbonation.
Smells: Citrus and banana
Taste: Banana, bready malt, orange, and booze
Mouthfeel: perfect!
Overall, I'm having this beer again. This is a brilliant product from a brilliant brewery!!

Review from 4/2010 notes. Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a semi-opaque brown/gold color. One finger off-white head, dissipated quickly leaving lacing. Aroma of wheat, clove, light carmel malt. A pleasant dunkelwiezen with strong carbonation, light fruit, spice and wheat flavors. Slightly rougher than Weinstephanen, but still very pleasant. Refreshing and tasty. Will buy again.

500ml bottle poured into a weizen glass
A: Pours a hazy golden color with a full three-finger head that settles quite slowly
S: Clove & banana with hints of bubblegum and wheat
T: This matches the nose perfectly- clove & bananas up front with lesser notes of bananas and wheat to round it out.
M: Medium-bodied with a nice zest though a short-ish finish.
O: I tried this tonight along with Ayinger's Brau-Weisse. Both were similar and both very good, though the Helles style of the Brau (vs the Ur's Dunkel) showed a bit better.

Pours a hazy brownish orange color. Big head on the pour with great frothy retention and thick lines of lacing.
Aroma of smooth wheat, yeast and floral hops.
Big wheat flavor on the bready end and quite smooth. Solid citric hop with spicy ginger notes. Yeast and clove character rounds it out. Excellent balance.
Very smooth feel and well carbonated. Medium body with lingering yeast texture.
Really good dunkel. Lots of flavor and complexity. A treat to consume.

$2.60 for the 500ml bottle.
It pours a dark gold/rusty colour, hazy, with a solid 1 finger head of foam and it leaves some excellent lacing.
It smells spicy, mostly fruity. Cloves, bananas, big whiffs of wheat. Very nice.
Big banana flavours in the taste, mild clove, wheat, nice flavours all around. Delicious and so soothing and easy drinking. Lowish carbonation and medium bodied makes for an enjoyable mouthfeel.
This is such a great value for what you get. It's been way to long since I last drank this.

#500 on untappd! Cheers!
Body isnt as dark as I expected, but still just dark enough to be a Dunkel. Looks almost exactly like Schneider Weisse. Head isnt as fluffy as I want either.
Smell is more roasty malt than yeast esters. I do get a hint of banana and sweet clove. Lots of wheat twang as well.
Initially theres just sweet rich roasted wheat. Then comes in a chewy malty banana. Very full bodied and thick for the style. Hints of an estery booze as well. Sweet notes of caramel and toffee flash across the tongue every so often. It really meshes with the banana flavors well.
Although its full bodied, it finishes smooth and clean, like every German beer should.

50cl bottle poured into Weihenstephan Weissbier glass.
BBE May 2012
A- 3 finger creamy white head producing good lacing/retention. The body is a slightly darker shade of cloudy amber/orange classic hefeweizen colour. Reminds of Schneider weiss original.
S- Classic clove with a more fruity quality than expected. Along with the usual hint of banana, some apple and pear is noticeable.
T- Clove and banana up front, with this sweet juicy apple note coming through in the clean light finish.
M- Medium/light body and carbonation. Refreshing but not lifeless/weak bodied.
D- A very tasty weisse. I really liked the more complex fruity notes compared to the more mainstream examples. Retained a good refreshing mouthfeel. Would happily drink on a summers afternoon under the shade of an oak tree.

Ayinger Ur-Weisse has an extremely thick, pillowy, off-white head and cloudy, orange appearance with thin bubble streams. After swishing the bottom third of the bottle, there are numerous gray blobs, which settle at the bottom and a thick, gray, descending cloud. The aroma is of white wheat bread, some banana, and cloves. Taste is similar and one also gets a little bit of bitterness, but that’s minimal. Mouthfeel is medium, and Ayinger Ur-Weisse finishes fairly dry and quite refreshing. This is a good beer.

A: Hazy, unfiltered, honey gold color. Yields a two finger creamy white head. Excellent lacing; leaving sheets down the glass.
S: Wheat and bananas, one may say banana bread. Syrupy honey like sweetness fills the nose. A rich smelling weizen.
T: The expected banana and cloves with a touch of the honey sweetness that comes through the nose.
M: Medium mouthfeel with moderate to high carbonation. Great, easy drinkability.
O: A really good weizen. Great for the weizen style, but I expected something a bit darker being a dunkel. Not upset by any means though.

A: Pours a golden orange color with a decent white head. Carbonation can be seen.
S: Wheat, cloves, yeast, and a hint of lemon.
T: Starts with wheat then goes into lemon and cloves. The lemon has a bit of tartness. The finish has a hint of grapefruit hops and faint bready malt.
M: Medium with a good amount of carbonation.
O: Nice lighter beer. Has everything you'd expect from a dunkel. Would be great for a fall or spring night.

Appearance - This beer is a beautiful orange-ish amber. It is very hazy and has a soft glow. Thousands of bubbles stream up from the bottom very quickly. There was about a finger and a half of head, tan in color with a very sudsy look. Tight little bubbles.
Smell - Has your classic wheat smell, very clovey and spicy banana. It smells very rich.
Taste - Wow. I like this better than any hef I've ever had. Very malty with a little tartness. A touch more grapefruit and hops on the front of the mouth, with a biscuit/bready finish.
Mouthfeel - excellent. Very sudsy and drier than expected. A bit soapy in texture.
Overall - While I'm not a huge hefeweizen fan, if I'm gonna drink a wheat beer, this is the one!
see you on the next one.

Pours a murky honey brown with a 2 inch foamy light beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks and dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of wheat bread, yeast, spices, and some light fruity aromas. Taste is slightly tart and is of wheat, overripe banana, yeast, and some slightly bitter spice flavors. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer but I think it tastes better than it smells.

A: Pours a cloudy copper color with a two finger thick creamy off-white head. The head reduces by about 25% but has great retention. There is significant lacing observed.
S: Lots of banana + clove in the nose of this beer with some much lighter hints of wheat and sweet malts.
T: This beer starts out a little sweet with some caramel notes to the malts and wheat, followed by the flavors of banana + clove, and finishes with a hint of toastiness and bitterness. Very nice complexity and balance to the flavors.
M: Medium bodied with moderate to high amounts of carbonation. Slightly prickly on the tongue like a champagne.
O: Very easy to drink and very refreshing, definitely a session beer that makes me want to sit outside on the beautiful spring day that it is today and have several of these - though it would be much better in a beer garden in Bavaria.
