217th Review
75cl bottle shared at Akkurat with a great crew
Poured in a gueuze glass
Enjoyed on 9 May 2012
Vintage: 2005 - the only one to my knowledge
Enjoyed next to the Reed Gueuze Muscat.
A: Tannish pink in color. Half (thin white) fingernail on brisk pour.
S: Unripened grapes, oak, dark fruit, and tartness. Cantillon funk and earthiness as well. Smells very, very sour, but nice.
T: A blend of grapes, lemons, oak, and mild aged cheese. Touch of spice near the end. Funk and barnyard balance is strong, but sourness is over-the-top on this one and takes away from my enjoyment of it.
M: Light/medium body with soft carbonation. Even though there was a small head, this tasted almost flat.
O: Having consumed this side-by-side to its sibling (Reed Gueuze Muscat), I thought this beer was a bit too unrounded and flat for my liking. The sourness was too much; however, I think with a bit of age it will balance out nicely. It was definitely good, complex, and fun to drink, but I would pick the Muscat over of this one.

Pour is transparent deep golden amber with very little white head. The nose nice, light funk, a bit musky and dank, sweet vinous aromas, cherry and red grape with light tart and dusty notes. The flavor has the light funk, musky and dank. The barrel blends in well adding oak, sweet red grapes, smooth vinous flavors. The finish has the dusty cantillon funk as the medium body smoothly rolls over the tongue with a sharp carbonation and dry finish. The barrel is integrated extremely well, very drinkable beer.

Bottle split with Danko at Akkurat, I lost my notes on this and I hadn't slept in days, just wandering around lost. This was the first beer we drank. Took about 20 minutes to fish this one out of the abyss, served in a lambic basket. Wonderful, expensive looking bottle. Beer poured a pinkish orange, pretty clear, with a healthy and fizzy white head. Quite sour nose, nice collage of lemons, red grapes, dry, dry oak, and pronounced funk. Flavor was puckering in a strange way, very sour-forward. Lemons mostly, definitely some musty grapes. Musty and dank. Acidity was a tiny, tiny bit high for my liking. A rare pleasure to drink, though not as good as some of Cantillon's more recent grape experiments (Pinot D'Aunis).

Bottle shared with my wife on my birthday, August 17 2010 at Akkurat.
A: Reddish-orange body. Medium sized off-white head. Not much lacing as the head slowly receded.
S: Red grapes, lemon, a bit of oak, some funk, and some pepper. Indicative of the acidic/sour treat to come.
T: A nive vinous character dominates from start to finish courtesy of the red grapes and pepper. The musty oak, light pepper and farmhouse funk brings this cleary back to lambic land. Quite sour and tart. Healthy dose of lactic acidity.
M: Balanced with a good effervescent carbonation. Moderate tartness and sourness. Dry finish.
D: A very nice beer... lucky to be able to make the trip to Stockholm and be able to try this treat.

Bottled in 2005.
The color of plums, with a fleeting head. Nose? Not much to speak of. Some vague fruit, not grapes exactly, and lactic acid. Tastes faintly of blueberries and strongly of lambic, which could be a workable beer were it not for the pepper in the finish.
About halfway through the bottle the pepper becomes harsh, and the tartness of the not-quite-grapes becomes harsher. A curious concoction.

I had 2 bottles of this over the past year. The first bottle I shared with my wife at Akkurat in Stockholm in August 2008 but my review notes come from a tasting of this with my cousin, krkearney at Akkurat in September 2009.
The beer poured a rosey brown color with a thick off white head that escapes rapidly and leaves way to a thin film on top of the beer. The nose of the beer was floral and earthy with notes of lemon, pepper. The taste is acidic and tart but not as much as the Muscat and is actually a bit sweet from the grape tastes. There is a nice vinous quality to the beer from the barreling and grapes. The finish is sharp/dry and just wonderful.

75cl bottle brought to Woodshop Quad thanks to Chris, thanks again buddy, reviewed from notes on my phone, I was so excited to try this one and it did not disappoint after years of hype, as it was in my top three beers of the day which is saying a lot for an event like that, poured into my New Belgium snifter, color was a bright pink mixed with yellow, small 1/4 inch bubbly white head that stuck around, decent retention, no lace, smell was full of tartiness, funkiness, mild cheese, dark grapes, mild citrus, and wood, taste was nice and tart in the welcome, the funk really came out in the middle with various acidic fruity flavors, grapes dominate the finish with a nice sour bite, gets really tasty when it warms, tart, sweet, fruity, funky, and cheesy mouthfeel, medium bodied, aggressive level of carbonation, taste lingers very well, could drink a lot of this stuff but more than happy to get a few ounces, light on the stomach and keeps you wishing there was more, could have easily finished off the bottle, alcohol is hidden greatly, stoked to be able to try this rarity, hope to track down a bottle myself now, highly recommended

Bottle sampled at Woodshop tasting - thanks Chris.
Pours a strawberry blond color with a foamy white head. Slightly hazy.
The aroma of the beer is of the signature Cantillon barnyard funk with some prominent notes of pinot grapes and faint oak. A light wheatiness underscores the funk.
The flavor of the beer was tart, tangy, and funky with a sourness that was on par with Cantillon Classic Gueuze. A noticable pinot grape character melded well with what seemed to be slightly fuller bodied gueuze. The acidity was mostly on the lactic side of things, with some faint notes of cheese in the background. A few hints of light oak were detectable. The malt foundation was light and wheaty.
The bodied was medium-light and the mouthfeel was light. The carbonation was prickly and complimented the bright flavors of the beer well.
This was a very enjoyable beer and was glad to have had the opportunity to try it. The pinot character was well defined, but not overpowering. It was a very nice marriage of wine and Cantillon's signature funky flavors.
