Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a medium coppery gold amber with a fine two finger off-white head with great retention and lacing. Great aroma of grapefruit, tropical fruit, herbal and citrus hops. Flavor is citrus, tropical fruit, sweet biscuit malt and citrus and pine hops. Finishes with nice complex citrus hops with a light herbal and floral character. Nice creamy medium body and mouth feel. A pleasant, slightly sweet IIPA with a nice balance of malt, fruit flavors and hops.

22oz bottle served in a snifter.

L - clear bright copper color with a white head that thinned to a ring leaving just a few lacing spots on the glass.

S - tropical fruits and brown sugar.

T - tropical fruit and orange chuckles candy with a dry bittering on the finish.

F - medium bodied, smooth feel, easy drinkability.

O - a good example of the style.

Thanks to angrybabboon for picking the bottle up in San Francisco.

Appearance: Slightly hazed burnt goldish orange. Small white head drops to faint wispy cap with a tiny collar. Some streaks and spots of lacing.

Smell: Some tropical tangerine, pineapple juice, and unripe mango. Grassy, herbal and floral on the back. Some caramel malt sweetness coupled with some lighter cracker-like pale maltiness. Mealy fruit - pear and apple- through the middle. Soapy. Somehow smells a bit old, but really isn't. Marmalade and pith. Some hints of alcohol.

Taste: Pithy marmalade. Orange flesh with some lighter mango and pear on the back. Nice malt balance adds some caramel malt sweetness. Decidedly breast. Leafy, grassy and floral hops non the first fish with some resinous bitterness. Pear. Slightly toasted. Slight minty finish. A decent balance with a lingering bitterness. Warming smooths it out a bit.

Mouthfeel: Medium body. Oily and slick. Moderate carbonation. Slightly dry.

Overall: Kind of like obliterating a personal pizza, not a real accomplishment.

A bit of a let down for my first Midnight Sun experience. A good take but not for the price.

Consumed 3/31/13

Split with Goblinmunkey7

Appearance: Hazy golden orange - some light copper in the mix - pours with a decent, off-white head - fades to a wispy cap and leaves some nice streaks of lacing

Smell: In a word, strange - tropical, in a decidedly citra way, with some mealy fruits - mangoes and pineapples - doesn't smell particularly fresh, honestly - some candy hops, some grassy aromas - sweet, pale and caramel hops

Taste: Tropical, fruity, and hoppy, but not exactly stellar - overripe oranges, ruby red grapefruit, mangoes, and syrupy pineapples - sweet in a remarkably fruity way, not in a malty way - some grassy notes - moderately bitter - lightly oily - mostly pale and some caramel malts - an earthy flavor in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium body, low carbonation, smooth, kind of strange aftertaste

Overall: Obliterate me harder!

Maybe my taste buds are still numb from last night (Knee Deep Simtra), but this doesn't seem remarkably aggressive or abrasive to warrant the name "Obliteration." It's fruity, juicy, and interesting. It's actually pretty balanced. Worth a try, if you can find it.

On Tap at Churchill’s Pub – San Marcos
6oz pour – 03/16/13

A: Light straw gold body with somewhat decent clarity and a touch of haze to it. Capped by a thin layer of off-white that fizzles out to just some bubbles leaving a few dots and light streak down the glass.

S: The nose is quite a disappointment with very little hop action coming through. I get a good amount of malty sweetness and a bit of alcohol. There is a hint of muted grapefruit and herbs there. This is otherwise severely lacking in the aroma department for a Citra DIPA.

T: Taste does open with some nice citrus-grapefruit notes; very floral with some evergreens mixed in. A bit heavy on the malty sweetness at first. Toasty biscuit. Starts to lighten up as I make my way through the pour. Growing on me a bit. Hops get much juicier and pronounced with more of an herbal spice on the finish. There is an upper moderate amount of bitterness to the beer. Resinous with a nice little pucker. Alcohol is somewhat assertive and a bit boozy at times but not entirely distracting. Relatively balanced and flavors are not half bad. I would say this falls more in line with the PNW style IPA. Accentuates a bit more malty sweetness than I prefer.

M: Moderate thickness on the body with some light filling. Nice creamy texture from the carb. Has a light dryness there but finishes rather wet overall. Hops are somewhat lingering with a resinous mouth coat.

D: This was not bad but did not meet expectations for a Citra Hopped Double IPA at all. Flavors were decent although aroma was a bit of a letdown. Would like to revisit a bigger sample but will not likely pull the trigger on a $14 bomber of this one.
Glad I just ordered a sampler to be honest.

Pours a golden orange with an off white sticky head. Leaves some great lacing.

Smells of pine right away with some fruity grapefruit and earthy notes. Slight touch of white bread.

Taste hits with the bitter burnt toffee and herbal earthy notes. Pine notes hit the toungue in abundance.

Mouthfeel is reletively sharp yet chewy. A semi viscus beer that satisfies.

Overall, this is something that I really enjoyed. There are some off notes in the flavor that detract for me but otherwise this has everything I like in a DIPA. I would love to try this on tap.

Appearance. Pours a clear gold with a touch of amber, topped with two fingers of cream colour head that leaves some nice lacing behind.

Smell. Sweet ripe tropical fruits; papaya, pineaple, and mango. There's a little ripe orange and grapefruit flesh and just a bit of light malt.

Taste. Lots of tropical fruit again, sweet mango and papaya mainly. Oranges, grapefruit, pineaple and just a bit of grainy malt. There's a decent bitterness in the finish in the form of citrus rinds that really cleans up the initial sweet fruitiness.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body with medium-low carbonation.

Overall. A very nice ipa with a ton of fruit. Very pleasant and easy drinking.
