The extensive distance between two breweries on the West Coast – 3767 miles – is bridged by this collaboration beer. Brewers Gabe Fletcher of Midnight Sun Brewing Company [Anchorage, AK] and Colby Chandler of Ballast Point Brewing Company [San Diego, CA] designed and brewed an exciting representation of their passions: hops, Belgian yeast, oak aging and Brettanomyces.

Just prior to the Great Alaska Beer & Barley Wine Fest in JAN 2009, Gabe and Colby brewed a West Coast-worthy IPA at Midnight Sun Brewing Company. This hop-centric beer became the jumping-off point for other intense flavors. During its course to completion, 3767 was affected by three different yeast strains--including Brettanomyces, aged for several months in French oak Cabernet Sauvignon barrels, and then bottle- and keg-conditioned.

Thank you, Kyle

Hazy orange with a dense off-white head that's thick and hangs around a while, leaving great lacing, this is a great looking beer. The nose is dominated by citrus and floral hop with a big Bretty bandaid and a little clove. The hop character is starting to fade, I get a little honey and caramel. The palate opens super Bretty with an almost astringent bandaid, mildly plastic-like character, before some juicy honey and orange comes through refreshing the palate a bit. Hop character is in the back with some citrus and floral character, and the bitterness is low. Drying finish with a hop bitterness and some citrus, this is decent. Light in body with a high level of carbonation and a long, Bretty finish with hop character, this one is solid. Not sure I'd actively it seek out, but I'm glad I got to try this.

medium amber in color but leaning golden with a light bit of haze that very quickly cleared up and left behind a huge, three inch towered head of white foam that took what seemed like forever to settle down. Aroma was light at first but built up after a few minutes. Ripe citrus hops, lemon and grapefruit dominant with hints of light spicy notes tugging on the palate and a light belgian floral note. As I take the first taste though is really where it begins to come alive. Insanely bright and crisp taste. Huge notes of lemon and grapefruit are all over this one. Ripping through the palate they leave hints of pears, light peppery spices, apricots and herbal yeast notes in the finish. Very dry and a huge amount of carbonation, I could have drank this one all day to be honest.

a - cloudy orange in color. large white head.

s -belgian yeast, faint caramel sweetness, brett funk, light floral hops. some woodiness.

t - huge pine hops and brett. there is some sweetness way way in the back. lemon rind. very bitter, surprisingly bitter at 1yr old. There is some of sour, but bitterness is much stronger. oak flavor comes through faintly on the finish.

m - body is lighter with bigger carbonation. dry finish

overall - very impressed with this beer. huge thanks to fear025 for sending me this (and 8 other beers) asking nothing in return. This is my 3rd brett ipa (which makes me an expert?). IMO, these should be aged for a year or two.

Aroma:Sour Belgian yeast and hops in the aroma. Also a little wine.

Appearance:Murky, pale tangerine in color.

Taste:Rather subtle in flavor, including some wood flavors from the barrel. It has a little sourness from the brett. A little red wine flavor in the foretaste. The piney hops rule the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel:Very smooth, light body, just a little astringency on the back of the throat.

Drinkability:Great Belgian IPA, retains the hops even after a bit of time in the bottle.

My first Midnight Sun beer. WHen I told Bill I hadn't had any MS before, he immediately gave me this bottle (well the next time I saw him anyways). So portia99, thanks a ton for this gem.

It pours with a huge almost 3 finger fizzy and bubble head that fades at a decent rate over a somewhat clear slightly hazy orange peach color with just a touch of a pink hue. At the bottom of the head it leaves a thick lacing, but the top of the head had none.

The nose is loaded with Brett. Not sure when this was bottled since the date coding on the side was not notched. It can't be fresh as the Brett dominates now. It has a nice wild yeast funk, dry funk, little barnhouse but not horse blanket. Under that is some hints of Belgian malts, light golden Belgian malts, and a touch of sweetness. I also get some very mild grassy hop effervescence.

Taste is interesting. Again the Brett has mostly taken over, but hasn't destroyed the beer. Plenty of Brett, funky barnyard, but again not horses ass flavor. Some light maltys underlinings, with light sweetness and a little Belgian golden malts. A very light hop presence, with some light bitterness, and touch of grassy mild hops. The cross between the light hops and funky Brett brings a strange effervescence that is interesting. The Brett also brings a light bready taste. It also has a very slight spicy quality, I think from the light warming alcohol, and perhaps a hint from the wild yeast. A slight juicy almost light Chardonnay flavor with smooth oak, which is barely detectable but somewhere in the background. I wonder if that was more dominant when it was fresh. It finishes with a nice dry finish, lingering Brett and light funk, as well as some light malty flavors. A slight bitterness comes on in the finish too.

The mouth is medium bodied with metric butt-loads of carbonation.

The drinkability is surprisingly nice. It has some light juicy flavors and malts, light bitterness, a nice dry finish, and goes down smooth. The Brett doesn't overpower and destroy the palate, and doesn't bring the wet horse blanket flavors, just some nice barnyard funk and wild flavors. For an oak aged Belgian IPA inoculated with Brett, at probably more than 8% by now, this is much more drinkable than I expected.

A:Cloudy shade of peach/orange with a billowing white head. Excellent head retention through the course.

S: Loads of musty brett fused with citrus. The oak complements the two nicely. Just a touch of pale malt in there. Nice overall balance between the components. As it opens up, i get a some grapefruit and melon characters from the hop/brett combo.

T: First impression - dry and bitter. As I adjust, grapefruit rind and lime become apparent. Also some pine and cloves. Although I pick up some of the oak in the flavor, the cabernet is not evident. Finish is lengthy, dry and bitter, with a slow alcohol burn. Could use a little more sweetness, but the Brett has had a few months now to work. Flavor is good, but not quite as good as the smell had me expecting.

M: Medium-bodied with high carbonation, which often bothers me but is smooth here and appropriate for style.

I have yet to find a Belgian IPA that I can really get excited about, but this was by far the most interesting one I have had yet, and well-worth trying. Would expect nothing less from Midnight Sun.

Thanks for the great trade Toby!

From 08/26/10 notes. Had at a local DC tasting.

a - Pours a golden amber color with 2 inches of white head.

s - Smells of spices, lemon, fruity malts, and some sour funkiness.

t - Tastes same as the nose, but especially heavy on spices. Not as funky as the smell.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

d - A pretty good Belgian with brett. I wish the taste had a little more funkiness to it and less spice, but still enjoyable. Would like to try again.

Pours a medium golden brown with a one inch creamy egg-white head. The head slowly dies down and resembles the froth on a nice cappuccino.

A bit funky. Smell reminds me of lemon zest, pineapple and belgian yeast, with a faint hoppy aroma following with some barnyard funk in the mix.

Very light and delicate flavors, some faint bitterness with some more lemon rind. The brett is subdued, but when combined with the hops creates a lingering bile-like bitterness. The aftertaste reminds me of the last time I had the dry heaves.

Medium to light bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall this was better cold when I first poured it. After some grilled steak and corn, it's wearing on me a bit and the bitterness is a bit too prevalent. An interesting beer but not overwhelming.
