Notes:
Dark and full-bodied, Mammoth Extra Stout provides a cozy blanket of warm and fuzzy flavors, including chocolate, caramel, coffee and nut. Huge portions of pale and specialty malts give this mammoth brew a complex palate while hops provide well-rounded balance.

Pours a thin black with a tan head. Nose is bright and fairly roasty, nice melange of berries, dark unsweetened chocolate, and gentle hops on the nose. Thin in the mouth with sharp carbonation. Flavor is very, very dry, very bitter roast on the finish. Green, hoppy, roasted coffee. I actually like this style but this is a bit thin and one dimensional on the flavor. Perhaps the bottle is a bit too fresh.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, char, floral, pine, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of roasted malt notes with moderate hops. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, caramel, toast, char, floral, light pine, and roasted earthiness. Moderate floral bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, coffee, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, char, floral, pine, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic balance and complexity of roasted malt flavors; with nice hop bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation medium-full body; with a creamy, chalky, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Export stout! All around great balance and complexity of roasted malt flavors with moderate hops; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

Another one to try from a great brewery that I wish I could get a lot more of. Thanks to gockets (Reddit).

Pours a darker colored fizzy smaller head that fades at a slower pace, nice lacing almost everywhere, pretty much pitch black beer.

Nose brings plenty of dark malts, black patent, some roast, a bit of smoked malt as well, faint dusty cocoa and even light creamy choc, dry clean toasty stout,

Taste starts with more dark malts, thick rich bitter roasty malts, some black malt, little roast, light smoked malt, dusting of cocoa, but also a light creamy cocoa. Quite dry overall, with an earthy dusty char that also brings some bitterness. Then hops too, quite bitter spicy chewy briney spicy hops and light acrid bitter roast combine to a very bitter taste. The dark malts bring a light char acrid taste, as well as faint bready biscuit malted milk ball flavor. Finish is super dry, very bitter with acrid charred malt bitterness as well as earthy spicy bitter hops, light cocoa and acrid char with roasted coffee too.

Mouth is fuller bodied, very dry almost gritty, decent carb, touch of warming booze.

Overall ok, just too much acrid roast char bitterness and combined with the spicy earthy chewy hops just gets overbearing, and it's very hard to actually enjoy this beer because of that.

Bottle kept in fridge, poured into a Deschutes Snifter.
Received in a trade, no bottle dating on bottle.

A- Wow. Seems over carbonated from the get go. A soft pour yields a pitch black looking beer with rocky, sticky mocha colored head that has some great staying power.

S- Roasted malts, dark chocolate, and dark roasted coffee. The usual suspects here. Smells good.

T- Hello dark roasted coffee. Seems to hit you in the face like the first cup in the morning. Followed by huge flavors of roasted malts, all mixed with a faint hint of un-sweet dark chocolate. Tasty.

M- Would like it to feel thicker. Maybe a high medium body on this one, or an extremely low full body. The carbonation is not nearly as high as the appearance seems. Seems spot on.

O- A solid stout from Midnight Sun. All the way from Anchorage Alaska down to good 'ole Missouri this one is one worth trying.

Smell is used espresso grinds foremost, with burnt caramel and fig newton notions playing backup.

Color is pitch black, a gentle pour produced a perfect head telling me this is aggressively carbonated. Head is tan, pillowy and bumpy with generally average lacing. Great looking stout.

There is so much good going on with the flavors here, I love it. If Garcia is espresso, then Wier is dark chocolate. Aside from that, some sips are burnt and almost smoky, while others show their sweet side with toffee and prune undertones. Sharp burnt ashy overtures keep it all in check.

The detractor here for me is the level of carbonation-just too much to let this linger in the mouth or the oils to cling, which in this case I think is a shame. It makes the beer light and pillowy in the mouth, but in this case I want this beer to sit heavy and be itself, pull up a chair, put its feet up.

I really do like this beer. As I said, the carbonation i think really holds it back from being something more. The flavor is, how shall I put it...kick ass.

Bought from The Bruery Provisions. Poured into a tulip.

Appearance: super fuckin dark. oily, a bit of a caramel brownish head. intriguing.

Smell: roasted malt, espresso, chocolate. surprisingly mild though.

Taste: bitter, roasted malt, bourbon, coffee, dark chocolate. a bit of a smokey aftertaste. the flavors are complex and complement each other very well.

Mouthfeel: medium body, decent amount of carbonation. more than I expected, but it works. it drinks very smooth, 7.8% ABV goes down like nothing. this stout is silky smooth.

Overall: Another great, flavorful brew by Midnight Sun. Those guys have a worldly knowledge of beer. This stout has an intoxicating taste and the body to back it up. I'm eager to see how the oak-aged compares.

Poured into a Ninkasi Brewing pint glass. No readable freshness date.

A- Pours a 100% opaque black color with a 1/2 inch tan head that retains a bit before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and sporadic spots of surface foam. Jagged ring of lacing .

S- Rich milk chocolate aroma. Some alcohol twinge but nothing too serious.

T- Chocolate in the start leads to a dark roasted char taste and then a metallic finish. Somewhat sweet with some faint hops in the background. Alcohol is well-hidden.

M- Chewy, creamy and a robust body. Medium carbonation. On point with the style.

O- A hearty, full-bodied stout with great drinkability and lots of chocolate flavor which is a plus for me. Thanks to SatlyMalty for the recommendation!

22oz bottle split between a pair of large snifters

Pours opaque brown-black with a thin ring of light brown head and a couple floating lumps of bubbles. Fair amount of fine, very slow carbonation going on. Smell is licorice, yeast, a touch of woodsmoke, a little coffee.

Taste starts out with sweet cherries and licorice, and fades to smoke, chocolate, and coffee. Some kind of strong sour twist in there, too, gives it a lemony sense.

Mouthfeel is gritty and fizzy. Overall, it's not bad. It might improve as it warms up.

Huge thanks to ArchEnemyBrew for sending me this as an extra! Thanks Hollis!

poured into snifter glass.

Appearance: black bodied beer with 1 finger of medium brown head. That seems to stay around for a while. Spotty lace.

Smell: fairely one dimensional, yet bold nose full of big roasty malt notes.

Taste: moderately bitter and roasty notes that compliment the bitterness. A bit of smoke and it's almost a charred note. As the beer warms, I can start to detect some black licorice.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Nice smooth drinker with not a hint of booze! The carbonation is well done and almost has a delecate feel to it!

Overall: Great example of this beer style! Fantastic mouthfeel! To me a foreign/export stout is not a beer style that gets much attention, but this beer does this beer style some serious press! Great job midnight sun for a well made flavorful beer!

Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter. This was opened at the August Baltimore BA tasting.

Appearance: Pours black as night with a layer of tan head that fades to a ring and leaves some lacing.

Smell: This is a smokey stout with some dark chocolate and mild vanilla notes. Just a touch of sweetness here as well.

Taste: Again, I'm getting some smoke right away. Not overly sweet. Bitter roast and some mild hops. The finish is full of smoke and roast with a touch of bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with aggressive carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This is a rather smokey stout. I enjoyed it, but it is rather intense. I'd have another, but only if I was in the mood.
