Bottle poured into a pint glass(originally reviewed on 9/7/12) Bottled 7/14/12

A - Half finger head that dissipates quickly into a thin cap. Golden in color an crystal clear, decent lacing.

S - All hops in the aroma. Pretty strong pine with resin and citrus.

T - Surprising compared to the smell. Medium bitterness, smooth piney hop flavor, with some bready malt mixed in. Finishes dry.

M - Medium body and carbonation. Very smooth and crisp for the ABV.

O - Very good DIPA. I don't remember enjoying this as much the last time I had it. It must not of been as fresh when I had it previously, as this bottle is just under 8 weeks old.

Pours a crystal clear, classic golden color with a quickly dissipating antique white head. The bouquet consists of citrus, pine, and apricot. The maltiness and hoppiness interact to create a tangy, piney, and sweet nose. Moutfheel is thin and wet, but suits the style. It's not quite as malty as the nose leads one to expect. It's a rather unique tasting IPA. Some pine is present and some Smarties candy. A lot of freshness. Some grapefruit bitterness. Finishes cleanly. Pretty good.

12 ounce bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a medium golden color with a one finger head and some lacing.

S: Citrus and floral hops along with some bready malts and a touch of alcohol.

T: Like the smell, the taste has citrus and floral hops balanced nicely with some bready malts. Slight grassy flavors are present as well. Hides the alcohol well and is easy to drink.

M: Medium bodied with good carbonation.

O: This is a pretty solid DIPA. It's very easy to drink, hides the alcohol well, is tasty, and quite affordable. It's actually one of my go-to IPA's when I don't feel like spending a ton of money.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into an oversized wine glass. 3/4in foamy head dissipates relatively quickly but leaves beautiful lacing. Smells of flowers and hops, not overbearing but delicious. Slick, foamy mouthfeel with a nice malt body balanced well by hop bitterness.
Overall a great beer, a favorite of mine. Hides its alcohol well, and tastes great.

Beautiful color. And you get hit immediately with a Great floral aroma. Smells almost like a wilted flower and balanced by malty sweetness. Tastes even better. I savor every mouthful. Lacing all up and down in your class. One of the best IPAs around. A must try for IPA lovers.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Southern Tier Brewing Company branded "imperial glass" (stemmed tulip)

Pours deep gold with strong orange and lighter amber hues topped with a bright white two finger head. Average retention and splotchy, coating lacing. Quite a bit of pineapple, floral citrus and tropical fruit, and a hint of phenol alcohol on the nose. Opens with continued pineapple, edible orchid, mango, papaya, joined by bready malt with a hint of caramel. Finishes smooth and semi-dry with citrus blossoms and moderate grapefruit rind bitterness. Moderate carbonation, medium bodied. Smooth, silky mouthfeel that is a touch syrupy on the edges. A solid DIPA, that initially trends a bit on the sweeter side that quick dries out toward the finish.

Bottle poured into snifter, DOB 11/28/12.

A: Clear golden hue, resembles an American lager just a touch darker. Nice two finger creamy white head, moderate lace and retention. Noticeable alcohol legs.

S: Good dose of sweet citrus mixed with some light pine, mostly sweet citrus in the nose. I'm also getting some dank like weed smell? Getting very light whiff of alcohol, light carmel malt, bready sweetness.

T: Significant amount of sweetness upfront, followed by a citrus hop bitterness in the form of orange peel, grapefruit, and some resinous, foresty, pine. Not much alcohol, but it is slightly there with some minor warmth going down.

M: Actually relatively lighter bodied for a double and drinks more like a single IPA. Feels sessionable in a way, a bit syrupy feel. If you gave this to me and didn't tell me it was a DIPA, I'd think it was a single IPA.

O: Pretty solid DIPA, a bit of balance and a lighter body make for quite a drinkable beer even with the hefty abv.

Beers like these really show the fact that a lot of people rate appearance simply based on the name and popularity. I'm not one of those people.

A - Looks like a cheap beer. Very light, see through gold with a one finger white head. Loads of carbonation bubbles can be seen. Left no lacing.

S - Pine, Marijuana, Hop resin. Smells like a this One Goes To 11!

T - Doesn't live up to the nose. Grapefruit, Lots of pine, slight resin, ever so slight orange. A bit watery as well.

M - Light to medium bodied with medium to heavy carbonation.

O - Overall this was a good IPA that could have been much better without the watery aftertaste. Would fair exceptionally with Italian food.

A - A clear amber/copper color, with 1 finger of head, and a small amount of lace left on the glass

S - Huge hoppy aroma! A very nice mix of citrus and bitter hops. Strong whiff of alcohol. Definitely a DIPA

T - Huge hoppy Kick in the mouth. Very tasty! A very good balance between the citrus and bitterness. Nice bitter aftertaste.

M - Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Oily residue left in the mouth.

O - An excellent DIPA. Can never go wrong with this one. Well done

Straight pour from 12oz pry-off bottle to a 25cl Duvel Single tulip; bottling date of November 9, 2012 printed in yellow ink just below the label (“DOB 11/09/12”), making this beer two days under four weeks old on the date of consumption. I know it’s been a while, but I’m still just so happy that Southern Tier dates their bottles now.

Appearance (4.0): Two fingers of bone-white foam come off of the pour, which shows a warm golden color with orange hues and a perfectly clear body. Head dies slowly, showing good retention and some moderate lacing—mostly spotty suds and a few splotchy arcs here and there.

Smell (4.0): Nice mix of fragrant, tropical fruits—sweet citrus like pineapple and mango—with some resinous undertones that turn into mild pine and mint. There’s some light, sweet bready character (kind of like king bread) underneath which fleshes out the sweetness of those tropical fruit tones, but doesn’t smell candy- or caramel-sweet at all.

Taste (4.0): Very nice—some more resin than in the nose, but the fruit character is mostly citrus pith and some overripe pineapple, which blends smoothly into that same kind of sweet bread character evidenced in the nose. There’s some moderate bitterness throughout which carries into the finish, which in turn is mostly citrus pith with a mildly vegetal undertone. It’s good though, well-balanced and delivering a decent hopload without being too heavy in any regard—any malt sweetness kind of blurs into the fruity hop sweetness.

Mouthfeel (4.0): Very drinkable. Maybe just on the full side of medium-bodied, with a slightly syrupy and slightly oily feel—the hop oils help dry it out in the finish, which is solid but not bone-dry by any means.

Overall (4.0): Generally speaking, this is a nicely balanced, small-ish DIPA (8.2% ABV is not small, but it’s not one of those gargantuan DIPA by any means). The hop profile opens up a bit as it warms, and in the end this is a very agreeable, not over the top, solid DIPA. Considering it’s typically about $11/ sixer (at least in upstate NY), this is a pretty good value that delivers the hops without clobbering you over the head with either malt or blinding bitterness. Good beer!

This is a completely agreeable IPA. Despite being a high gravity beer, I would consider this a fine introductory IPA for someone used to more mild flavor profiles. Take out the sicky sweetness from Sierra Nevada and you've got ST2XIPA. There is a lot going on with this beer without being too agressive. This is one of the most well balanced pale ales I've ever found to be regularly available.

A. Clear and pale yellow color with 3 fingers of crisp white head.

S. big resin hop smell hits me first followed by citrus rush.

T. Pale hop flavor up front followed by some sweetness and closes with a big and dry hoppy finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and very palatable for a DIPA.

O. this is an easy drinking smooth as hell DIPA and definitely a must try.

Had on tap at whole foodscolumbus circle. Pours a clear golden orange color with 1.5 fingers head, mild retention very nice lacing.

Smell is typical for an IPA- floral and pine hops dominate, with a hint of lemon. No malt to be detected. Nice, but nothing amazing.

Taste is very nice- light grain flavor up front, closely followed by hop bitterness, floral then earthy pine hops, finishes dry. Good bitterness- not a malt bomb like other DIPAs.

Mouthfeel is very nice- medium light body, moderate to full carbonation, a decent dose of resin. This is a very nice beer for the style and the price. Nothing crazy but very solid and drinkable.

a sweet ipa, in the waynes world sense, not the sugary sense. pour is real light for the style, clearish and golden to bronze in color. a medium one inch head, pure white, sits on top and slowly mellows. the nose is citrus all the way, grapefruit and lemon, but i am missing the malt id like to see. flavor thought just rocks, malt balances out intense bitter hops, mean and brutal and chewy, but also somehow light and pleasant. i like the finish, its bitter, but more fruit than hop essence, which i think is nice this time of year. really robust hop flavor, but it fades to fruit in that slow drama way. feel is good, enough bubbles and a lazy sort of medium body, its not so interesting on the tongue, but it holds its own. the alcohol is also oddly absent, it doesnt even come out when the beer warms up, just sort of stays away, which is scary and brilliant at the same time. one of southern tiers most drinkable big beers, i really support this, especially on tap in marcellus, new york. who woulda thought?

Bottle

A: Poured gold with a short, white head. Retains thin, lacey head throughout. Very clear.
S: Citrus and grass. Even a little hay. Kinda earthy. Assertive, but not overpowering.
T: The aromas carry directly over into the taste. Good balance between them. Bitterness is moderate despite the strength. Tasted a hint of breadiiness on the finish that I liked.
M: Moderately full thanks to carbonation. Nice and clean. Dry but easy drinking. Warmed me up a bit after a couple sips.
O: Great beer. Not as overwhelming as it could have been. Nicely balanced and plenty enjoyable.

Served from a bottle into a Mason jar. Pours a clear gold with a foamy head that dissipates after about a minute. Citrusy, slightly maltier aroma than some IPAs. Full, balanced flavor; bright and hoppy with a subtle malt sweetness and a sharp, noticeably alcoholic aftertaste. The taste gets thicker and less alcoholic as it warms. I just finished the bottle, and my head is starting to feel a little fuzzy.

Overall: This is a very good double IPA that tastes like a thick, balanced single IPA. I enjoyed this beer from start to finish. Recommended.

A- This is a filtered beers is very weird, it's definitely strong yellowish color. And you could pass for a lighter beer. If you put his beer next to Stella you may not be able to pick which ones the DBL IPA is which one's not

S- As with many double and Imperial IPAs, smell appears to be lighter and a bit more sweet. However, It is enjoyable

T- Overall very well balanced, got a little bit of forward, and then a nice middle ground with just enough of a hop bite by the end so that you know you drinking an imperial idea

M-Mouth feel is where I believe this beer really shines it's got a really nice balance, the kind of beer can you drink without wondering whether you were drinking malt or hops just very nice rich smooth mouthfeel.

Overall- As a whole this beer is a very nice Imperial IPA… I personally would rank this in my top 15 across United States at this point. Definitely recommend you try it

12 oz bottle served in to a standard pint glass

A- A fairly aggressive pour brings out a single finger head covering a light orange/gold body. Minimal lacing and rising carbonation.

S- Lots and lots of pine. Smells like a Christmas tree. A tiny bit of grapefruit, but this one is really all pine on the nose.

T- Really bitter hops hit me first. Everything else follows the nose to a T. I get a little bit of malt, but it's not quite enough to balance it. The taste is far from bad, but there is something that is slightly off-putting. Perhaps it is the relationship between the sweet and bitter tastes.

M- Leaning towards the thin side, but with a moderate amount of carbonation. Finishes quickly and crisply.

O- Not my favorite representation of the style, but it's the best I can do in this little college town of Alfred.

From notes, purchased from the Growler Station in NYC, drank later that night.

Pours a hazy gold color, pretty clear with a decent white head.

Aromas are grapefruit, resin, and lemon.

Taste is just like the nose, hoppy, bitter with some grapefruit, resin, and resiny hops, also kind of dusty.  Finish is crisp, lightly sweet with some crystal malt flavors.

Mouthfeel is smooth and full bodied.

Overall, a pretty good DIPA, not quite up to top notch standards, but still good.

Appearance: Clearness, but a nice slightly darker color for an IPA
smell: brilliant clean hoppy smell
Taste: Amazing. It has a strong hoppy character, but its not jarring, ripping, or brutal. its like being hit on the tongue like a velvet wrapped hammer.
Mouthfeel: full malty backbone for a IPa, yet still to style. Excellent

To me this is a perfect double IPA. It just works on all levels and is so good that even a malt loving person like myself can enjoy its flavors.
If you see it, get it. Its a great beer for a great price.

This one has a bottle date on it 8/23/12.

A - pours out a clear light golden yellow, with a white head of a fingers height which died off relatively fast. Average lacing on this one. Head died to nothing after a few minutes. Looks like a typical IPA.

S - I get a nice dose of crisp clean smelling hops that provide a light sweet citrus (orange), mango and pine aroma with a nice caramel malt back on it. Not very strong on its nose but pleasant none the less.

T - This beer comes off nice clean and crisp with some pine, grass, orange citrus, and some pineapple sweetness. It is relatively balanced at this point with a caramel back on it. Cannot detect the alcohol besides on the back end which cleans off your palate and dries it out. Only complaint is a slight metallic flavor on the aftertaste. Hops do not build on your palate so you get to taste and enjoy them after each sip.

M - The beer is nice and soft on the palate with a medium light mouth feel all followed by a nice dose of carbonation. This beer slides down really easy and makes you want more. All I can say is crisp.

O - I really enjoy the way this beer drinks for a Double IPA, definitely not extreme for the style but really clean, crisp, and pleasant for a beer coming in at 8.2%. Nothing to complain about here just a really good easy drinking beer. I could put a few of these back for sure. Will buy again. Well done, cheers!

Its always nice to discover a great beer from a new brewery.

Thin white persistent head. Light copper in color.

The smell of this beer is pretty mild but it is rather pleasant with hop and grain notes. It definitely smells like an east coast IPA but it isn't a robust aroma.

The taste is exceptional, very well balanced, perhaps too balanced for a DIPA. One would expect the hops to outweigh the malt in a beer like this but they are evenly matched. This beer is well carbonated and has an excellent finish.

Poured into standard pint glass, color is transparent gold, head is off white presenting pretty thin with not much lacing.

Smell is all big pine hops with light grapefruit intermingled, feint toasted or light pale malt noted as well.

Taste is dominated by the big hop flavors, mostly pine upfront, then grapefruit and lemon in the tail end; malt flavors are backing up mainly in the form of light clean malt, maybe a note of toastiness

mouthfeel is just right for an ipa, just enough mixed malt to balance hopiness.

Overall, great well balanced ipa, not too sweet and very hop forward.

A: Burnt orange in color with two fingers of off white head with little retention. Thick sticky lacing all the way around the glass.

S: A strong smell of pine and sweet malt. Subtle notes of orange and pineapple.

T: Bitter hops up front followed by everything that was in the smell. Really sweet and malty. There is some sort of disconnect where the hoppiness and sweetness don't balance each other out and are like two separate entities in the beer.

M: Light carbonation in a light body for a DIPA. It doesn't really stick to the mouth at all either.

O: It is is probably the lightest DIPA I've had. Truthfully, I liked the idea of the light mouthfeel because it is unique for a DIPA. It wouldn't be all that bad except that it lacks the overall taste of a big DIPA. Besides the ABV, this actually tastes like it is somewhere between a pale ale and a single IPA that is really sweet. I'm not likely going to be drinking this one again.

A- Pours a Slightly Hazy Golden/Yellow color, white one fingers width head, not a whole lot of lacing retention
S- Citrus, hops, a little malty sweetness, nothing spectacular
T- Similar to the nose, get some lemon and resinous pine too, nothing really jumps out
M- For a Double IPA, very crisp, dry and a little thin, but very drinkable for the style
It has the ABV of a Double IPA but reminded me more of a Single IPA, a nice beer decent price but nothing really wowed me other than the drinkability
