22oz bomber purchased in 2008 at Oak Tree Buyrite Liquors in South Plainfield NJ. Taken out of the cellar and consumed today.
Appearance: Pours a transparent dirty dark copper with a 1.5 finger lightly butter cream stained white crown that shows good retention and nice lace.
Smell: Raisins, dates, figs, sweet oak and a faint orange cream note coated by caramel.
Taste: Raisins, sweet oak, and a light caramel combine but at this age they lack pungency. No alcohol presence after 4 years.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Doesn't drink to style enough for me.
Overall: An "OK at best" beer when it was fresh that has mellowed to a mediocre strong ale in just 4 years time.

Clear bright copper (SRM 14) with no head. Very viscous in a Dogfish Head snifter glass.
Big sweet malt with ample caramel, followed by pine tar, dates, and hints of fig. Also detected with warmth is sweet tea, oak, allspice, and perhaps some red wine.
Sweet malt with light bitterness generally follows the nose with emphasis on the oak, but no allspice or wine. Pine and tea are more prominent with warming. This one has a long, mild finish.
A full, syrupy body controls the alcohol, while prickly carbonation controls the chewiness.
This is a decent beer that fits within my impression of the style, if not precisely within the actual profile. It was enjoyed late in the afternoon of St. Patrick’s Day.

I bought this during Thanksgiving weekend on a trip to NY.
A - dark, murky orange with a thin, white head that fades very quickly
S - huge bready aroma, big candy sugar notes
T - bread, candy sugar, faint oak and wood in the finish, well masked alcohol
M - medium to full bodied, well carbonated, a bit warm
This is incredibly malty with a dominant bread note. There is also a strong sugar presence. Overall, the flavor is similar to some barleywines that I've had but without much of a hop character. This wasn't a bad beer, but it had a simplistic flavor profile. I'm glad I got to try it.

Review from 9/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip.Pours a medium orange amber with virtually no head, light carbonation. Malty light wood aroma. Light oak, sweet and caramel malts, slight nuttiness. Caramel and light floral flavors in finish. Smooth and well integrated. Appeared bland at first, but improved with further drinking and warming. ABV well covered. A pleasant, understated strong ale.

Orangey, cloudy. No real head.
Orangey, caramelly barleywine nose.
Slightly toasty, dryish caramel. Kind of a biting barleywine, though time has definitely weathered this beast.
Not very carbonated, thickish though and with a bit of heft to it.
Good beer if not mind-blowing, a bit intense. If you can dig bold barleywine flavor, go for it.

22oz bottle poured into my CBS snifter. It poured a deep amber orange color with a thin, spotty, white lacing scattered across the top of the beer. The little bit of head that was there initially faded pretty quickly, but the color looked really appealing.
The aroma has a really good mix of caramel maltiness and woody oak. The sweeter, malty, caramel, brown sugar flavors are really complimented well by the vanilla and oak wood. I'm getting some orange and slight honey like flavors out of it as well. The flavors really come together well in it.
The taste also shows off the woody oak flavors very well. I get a little more of the caramel and orange blossom sweetness to it as well. The finish has enough bitterness to balance out the sweetness. The oak flavors really compliment well.
The mouthfeel leans a little towards the heavier side with carbonation being a little below average. Nice mouthfeel for the style. Overall, I really liked this beer. I think it really benefited from some age as everything really smoothed out and came together well. The oak flavors really stood out for me in it as well. Very enjoyable beer overall.
