I had to write a full review because this beer seems a little up or down with people.

It is a milk stout and to me comes off more of a barrel aged beer..

Poured into a standard pint glass...

Very dark pour, thin head, not much retention, very sticky lacing.

Smell is super duper sweet... toffee, caramel, butter.... again smells super sweet like candy.

Take at first sip was very sweet, a little too sweet for me and I like sweet.... but it's all what it described... creme brule.... toffe/caramel/butter/whipped pecan taste. Bery sigary...most people don't know what it tastes like but southern tier nailed it... has a perfect taste of creme brule with that perfect burnt taste to it that is also in wee heavy.... mouthfeel was good, a little sticky but not to heavy and not too light....

Overall this was a great brew that is more of a sipper... alcohol is noticeable but my biggest thing is it was a little sweet.... had it in summer and probably better in the winter. But they nailed the taste just a tad too much..

A - dark black like an oil. Thin tan head, decent lacing coming down.

S - wow what a smell. Syrup and cream. The vanilla hits hard too. Smell is out of this world. Caramel comes through big time as well.

T - amazing caramel and vanilla with a little roast to it, very much a creme brûlée. Nit boozy either for being just under 10%. Finishes clean, very drinkable.

M - creamy and smooth. Full bodied but doesn't linger around un-wanted. Finishes great.

O - awesome beer. I'm really quit blown away. Highly recommend this one.

Pours very dark, but not as dark as many stouts. About a medium viscosity. On the thiner end as far as big stouts go.

Smells like a ton of sugar, vanilla, and more than anything, butterscotch. Huge butterscotch smell. I like the smell, but the sweetness is a bit intimidating.

Super sweet indeed, but there is a decent amount of bitterness in the background. Not really an interesting bitterness...It's just...bitter. Bitter butterscotch. Fun.

I like the mouthfeel. It's solid. Medium carbonation. Pretty smooth. It could be a bit thicker, but nothing to worry about.

Overall, I like this beer. It's interesting and unique. I can't drink a lot of it, but I appreciate what ST is doing here.

Poured entire bomber into 34oz mug. Dark brown pour, black in the glass with toffee-brown around the edges and a thin brown head that dissipated rapidly with spotty lacing. Smell is huge caramel and toffee, with malts hidden in there somewhere, and a tiny hint of alcohol. Taste isn't as heavy on the caramel/toffee as the smell, but it's definitely there. Sweetness explodes up front with the trademark bitter coffee/chocolate of a stout only coming in to finish off. Leaves a bit of sticky aftertaste; mouthfeel is full and creamy. It's a slow drinker because of how sweet it is; this wouldn't be an every day beer, but it would pair amazingly with desert or as a nightcap.

Poured into a tulip at. Cellar temps. Review from notes taken.

Appears black with brown around the edges when held to the light. Not a lot of head on the pour, no lacing to speak of.

Smells like someone dropped a bottle of vanilla into my glass. I'm trying to get some malts out of this, but the vanilla overpowers everything.

Tastes like butterscotch, burned butterscotch. Lots of vanilla, maybe some crystal malts coming in to give the butterscotch flavor, but it comes across as dicetyl, some roasted malts bring a little bitterness and a percieved burned flavor towards the end.

The beer feels oily and slick, not as thick and creamy as I expected from an imperial milk stout.

Overall, its the polarizing beer that I expected. There's no balance here, none at all. If you're a fan of an aggressive vanilla profile than this is for you. If you're looking for something a bit more subtle, a bit more balanced, and more complex, this brew isn't for you. It certainly wasn't for me.

A dark, sweet, powerful beer – the perfect nightcap, I’m hoping. Cheers.

A: Pours like coffee, a deep reddish-brown that lets a few rays of light through. Head is a very light color for a stout, a beige foam that rises to an inch in height; reminiscent of cappuccino cream. Sandy lacing and a few bubbles circling as retention.

S: Sweet Jesus, this is vanilla syrup. The body oozes with tones of gooey butterscotch, caramel, and yes, a ton of vanilla bean; a dessert in a glass. I can smell a little fruit underneath, maybe some strawberry, and a little bit of booze, too – crème brulee with a little Bananas Foster flambé to it. I’ve never preferred sweet beers, especially stouts, but there’s something about this that’s just so enticing…probably the fact that it smells like a candy store.

T: Initially, it’s a nice, roasty stout – notes of dark chocolate, burnt bread, smoke. Then comes the sugar rush: a cloying, syrupy taste of caramel, vanilla extract, and butterscotch fudge. It’s sweet enough to totally dry out my mouth, and a tightening oiliness of the hops just augments it; slick pine resins crystallize this as a sticky, impossibly sweet stout. A quick taste of brandy finishes it out with pepper and thick booze, a bit like cough syrup in the aftertaste; molasses, lactose sugar, and hop resins linger, as well.

M: It’s so sweet it sticks to the roof of your mouth like saltwater taffy. It’s rich, but there’s enough heat and carbonation to keep it from being too viscous. If this were at 11% ABV or higher, it would be basically undrinkable (a la Founders CBH).

O: I don’t know what to say. So you like your pine cones dipped in vanilla icing? This is your beer. Do you like expensive, vanilla-heavy desserts, but hate the whole chewing thing? Grab a bottle. I actually liked this experience, though, and that’s the weird part – my brain tells me this is too sweet, but I keep drinking. It’s a strange beer, but it’s mesmerizing at the same time; overall, an enjoyable drink.

This beer is great, really smells like creme brulee, its has a sweet taste but then it doesn't, the smell is sweet but the beer has a nice stout taste and feel. I put some in a snifter then put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it,and it was great a must try.

2012 bottling. Had it in the cellar since July. Poured into a snifter.

Appearance: Pours a deep black with a slight tan head. Lots of lacing on the glass.

Smell: Huge custard and vanilla notes. Smells like . . . .what else ? . . . .creme brulee.

Taste: Follows the nose. Big notes of vanilla bean and custard. I also taste some stone fruit, hop bitterness, milk chocolate, molasses, more vanilla, and earthy spice. All of this is complimented by warm alcohol.

Mouthfeel: It's medium bodied, but the finish is long and complex - a solid 1 to 2 minutes after each sip.

Overall: Wow, this beer aged well. Accessible, yet complex. Multifaceted, but it emphasizes the vanilla. Just really darn good. Would definitely buy again.

Tall light tan head tops a pitch black beer. Great retention and lacing.

Heavy caramel in the aroma. Very sweet. Not much else to mention its hard to get past the caramel sweetness.

Intense dark roasted malt in the flavor. Toffee, caramel, chocolate and coffee. More bitter than I expected.

Heavy, thick velvety mouthfeel with a delicate carbonation.

A decent beer, but I got sick of it pretty quick. If you're in the mood for something really heavy with intense flavor, this may hit the spot.

Your experience of this beer may depend considerably on context. Let me explain:

The first time I had this beer I was with 6 people and we were spending an evening tasting extreme beers and strong cheeses. We worked up to some very flavorful brews prior to opening the Creme Brulee Stout. I can't remember what cheese we happened to have at the time, but it was perfect. Honestly, I thought this was the best beer I had ever tasted.

Now fast forward a bit: I bought several bottles for friends, and more for myself. The next time I had it, my wife (who had also loved it on the "introductory night") and I opened a bottle to sip by itself as we planned to have a relaxed evening together. After our first sip, we both looked at each other and said "What were we thinking?!" It was hard to even swallow a few sips -- like trying to drink some type of super sweet syrup. Yeech!

We had already bought more bottles, so for the next one we decided to have some unique and very flavorful cheesecake. The first half of the bottle was again among the finest we had ever had. However, we could not finish the entire bottle (it kept quite well re-capped for a few days, however).

This is definitely an extreme beer, with intense flavor and considerable sweetness. If you attempt to drink it by itself, or if you are planning to drink much of it, I think you will be quite disappointed. However, if you either build up to it with other extreme beers prior to drinking it -- and / or if you pair it with extreme food (rich, cheesy, and sweet), you may just find that this beer gives you a totally resplendent and unforgettable evening. So, my rating is assuming that you follow the above precautions and don't plan to have more than about 1/6 of the bottle for yourself that night. Otherwise, you are likely to rate this beer a 2 or below...

I hope this helps you to enjoy one of the most unique and flavorful beers on the market. And I do believe that the quality of the ingredients used must be outstanding.

Purchased this one in MO in July of 2012 and kept in the cellar.

This beer looked pretty nice on the pour into an U.S. Air Force Academy pint glass. Color was murky black/brown with a crowned mocha head that fizzled down rapidly. Scant lace remained.

I love creme brulee, so I was excited to get a whiff of this. The scent of sweet buttery vanilla and slightly burned sugar had me pretty ramped up, but it also seems very...artificial. The dark fruity chocolate tinge was there, but was mostly overwhelmed by the sweet vanilla.

Unfortunately, flavor is where this one goes horribly wrong. So overly sweet it's sickening and it's not a good sweet either - it's a ten spoons of sugar in one oz of corn syrup sweet. It's hummingbird food sweet. It's got a cough syrup phenolic medicine type of flavor that makes me want to spit it out. Yes, the vanilla is big. So big you feel as if you're breathing vanilla extract fire. The bitterness from the brew fights with all this sweetness and they both lose as they turn into one horrible mess. Nearly all chocolate hints are lost in all this. Actually made my stomach sour. I think you get the picture. After struggling through most of one glass...drain pour.

This is a very chewy and sticky brew, but I found so not in a good way. Nearly all the carbonation is eaten up once the pour settles leaving it fairly flat. This combined with a cough syrup consistency...meh...no thanks.

I was excited to see this in the store as I very impressed with Choklat by this brewery. It seems they just simply poured flavoring (or maybe a scent) into this beer and released it without ever trying it for themselves. I see other BAs have given this beer stellar reviews. This makes me wonder about differences in batches at Southern Tier.

Next time, pass.

This is an all around GREAT beer! If you like milk stouts, try this sucker out! It has a rich and creamy color and tastes great too. Even at nearly 10% abv, it goes down smooth. The only thing about this beer is at one sip it will leave you with some dank coffee breath for the rest of the night. Consider yourself warned.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a Samuel Adam's pint glass.

Appearance:Pours a thick black with a frothy dark brown/chocolate head, about half a finger in size. The head slowly recedes, leaving a caramel-looking foam. Retention is good.

Smell: It really does smell like Creme Brulee, with obvious notes of vanilla, cream, and caramel. Extremely malty, of course. I don't really detect any hops; it's pretty sweet smelling.

Taste: Well, it does taste like sweet Creme Brulee! However, it is certainly not the only note. I detect a strong hint of coffee, some hoppiness, and then there is that creamy caramel like backbone. There is an alcohol bite and the bitterness is moderate.

Mouthfeel: Moderately carbonated, it leaves a frothy beer-stache on me so it's fairly heavy in body. Creamy, of course. Desert, all the way.

Overall: A good beer that I would love to actually pair with Creme Brulee sometime, as it would match quite well. This is most definitely a DESERT beer.

Poured from a Bomber (22 oz) into a tulip. Bottle has ridiculously philosophical description that made me chuckle a bit.

A: Black with a mocha head. The darker the better in my book, and this is black in any light.

S: Nose is amazing. Vanilla custard desserts and chocolate. Vanilla is probably my favorite flavor, and in no beer has it ever been more abundant in the nose or taste than this one.

T: Dark chocolate, coffee, and vanilla custard deliciousness. It would be perfect if it had been oaked a little, and if it weren't so sweet. That's the thing with this beer, the reason why a lot of people don't like it as much as I do (and it pretty much ruined all other beers for my girlfriend, she went bananas over it), it's too sweet. Now I have a huge sweet tooth, and this was overly sweet for me by a bit, so I can see why it gets an 87, but I LOVE THE VANILLA, so it's an A+ in my book.

M: Full bodied and quite smooth, nearly perfect.

O: Loads and loads of my favorite flavor on earth, vanilla, so of course I'm going to give it an A+. Overly sweet, yes, but still absolutely delicious.

Appearance-Deep Black, looking everything like the Imperial Stout it is.

Smell-This is where the beer differentiates from other stouts. It smells scrumptious, huge vanilla notes, huge butterscotch notes. It simply smells amazing.

Taste-Just like the smell, big sweet vanilla and butterscotch notes upfront. Towards the end comes the bitter chocolate notes and helps cut the sweetness beautifully.

Mouthfeel-Full

Overall- This is a great dessert beer. I wouldn't drink it everyday however for special family occasions its a great dessert. Southern Tier doesn't disappoint again.

A: Aggressive center pour leads to a rising thick 2 finger espresso whip colored head that slowly fades and leaves thick lacing throughout the taste.

A - Opaque, almost black in color, with generous khaki colored head.

S - Could smell it the second the waitress set the glass down on the table. Smelled exactly like a creme brulee dessert. Sugar, vanilla, with a touch of alcohol as well.

T - Delicious sweetness. Definitely detect the creme brulee in the flavor, and almost tastes like a Worther's candy. Vanilla and sugar, like you would think of the delectable dessert. Absolutely amazing. A little bit of alcohol bite on the back, as well.

M - Smooth, thick, creamy. A true dessert beer.

O - This proved to be an elusive beer for me. Finally lucked out at Villages Draft House in Raleigh, NC. I went to the bar for the sole purpose of trying this on beer, only to be told that they had sold out shortly before my arrival. The waitress was kind enough to convince the bar tender to squeak out just enough from the keg for a sample. Glad she did, because it was well worth the wait and the trouble.

Heavy on the malt, and vanilla extracts, light on Hops. But if you like stouts, porters, anything with lots of malt and relatively few hops.. Then you will love this beer..

It is exactly what it is described as.. The Vanilla aromas smell just like a Creme' Brule and the finish is heavy but smooth.

The only thing I have to say against it, was that as smooth as the first taste was, there seemed to be a bitter finish. While it tasted quite good, the taste was trying to compete with what I think is one of the most aromatic beers I have ever had.

I will admit it was much better from the tap than it was from the bottle. In both cases it was exceptional.

A: Pours an opaque jet black in color with some dark brown highlights and light amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a half finger tall tan head that quickly reduces to a small patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Strong aromas of butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel.

T: Strong flavors of caramel, brown sugar, heavy cream/whipped cream, and vanilla. The overall flavor is quite sweet but not cloying and very tasty. Very much reminds me of the flavors of creme brulee.

M: Just a touch heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Silky smooth.

O: This beer is quite easy to drink with the fairly high ABV extremely well hidden. Super enjoyable, I think of this beer as dessert with the sweetness and it delivers on the name/description. I have enjoyed this one since the first time I tried it and many of my family have grown to enjoy it as well after having me suggest they try it.

22 oz bomber, poured into a snifter.

Before reading this review, please understand this is an extreme beer that *will* divide the crowd. I decided to write down notes and review it later, as I might have been too emotional on the night itself. I wanted to give it a more honest chance than just a 1.0 in every category and say it's the worst beer I've ever had. It's not, but boy is it close.

A: Okay, I suppose. Quite thin-looking with obvious reddish notes. Foamy, bubbly, soapy head.

S: WHOA-HOA-HOA! Absolutely horrendous. I think the best way to describe it, is the vanilla-scented candle from Hell. Huge waft of artificial vanilla essence with a vague hint of hops are all I get from this. For being so artificial, it's also surprisingly stale. It smells like the butterscotch and vanilla sweets your grandparents used to keep in the TV cabinet where temperatures would reach the upper eighties, together with their collection of rubber bands and potpourri. Sickening.

T: I suppose you could live with the smell if the taste was up to scratch, but sadly I was equally disappointed. The stench of rotten and chemical vanilla in your nose contradicts with the mostly hoppy flavors you get in your mouth at first, which is then washed away by booze to lead to a sandy dry finish. I don't know what this is supposed to be, but I sure as heck don't like it. Absolutely lip-curlingly vile.

M: I suppose this isn't over-carbonated and therefore has an okay mouthfeel, but this is sadly one of these numbers I have to fiddle around with to give it the low score I feel it deserves.

O: Knowing that a lot of people aren't big fans of Southern Tier's emulation style of brewing, I did rather like their Oat, Choklat and Mokah when I tried them. This however is just a swing and a miss for me. A big swing, I'll grant them that, and this is one of those beers that probably go well with people that have either an immense sweet tooth, or just... well... sorry, I can't begin to imagine how anyone could like this. That is - however - just my opinion, and I like the fact that Southern Tier either goes big or goes home. Big kudos on that!

22 oz bottle into a tulip
A- black with tiny tan head, even with aggressive pouring.
S- one of the best smelling beers I've ever had. I admit to love vanilla flavor but you could smell this from across the room and the caramel/butterscotch flavored shine thru like promised.
T- like the name suggests, dessert in a glass. Minimal bitterness but vanilla, toffee, chocolate, caramel and burnt sugars.
M- not as big as you'd think with a stout and such high ABV, but the flavors do linger, even after the beer is gone.
O- a very good beer for its style - know what you are getting yourself into and enjoy this one!

22 oz poured into a large wine glass and a snifter. I got a great deal on this from a local place. Hopefully I like it!

A - pours black, forced pour with little head. Carbonation apparent on the periphery, no residual foam.

S - wow, so much vanilla and caramel. It smells like a Werthers candy dipped in almond or hazelnut extract. Plenty of fruity flavors beneath it too, apples and pears. A substantial aroma.

T - there's hardly beer beneath the vanilla and caramel flavors. A true dessert beverage. I get a little bitterness off the malts. Points off for not differing from the smell enough. There's not a ton of complexity, just big, big flavors. Drinkable.

M - not great, the carbonation sticks to the mouth way too much. There's no hint of the alcohol, but it's not very high. My girlfriend likes the carbonation content.

O - pretty good for the price. My girlfriend likes it, which makes it worth its weight in gold, I'm always looking for quality craft brews for her to drink with me! We both prefer vintage Mokah and vintage Choklat.

EDIT: this beer is crazy polarizing. It's a ton of fun to read all the polemical reviews!

A- Pours black with ruby highlights, a one finger tan head.

S- Would smell great, if it were a candle, not what I want to smell from a beer, Vanilla, burnt sugar, not much else in the nose.

T- Like eating a Yankee brand vanilla candle with butterscotch icing. Such an artificial sickly sweet taste, makes me almost gag. I detect nearly no hops, just sugar on top of you guessed it...more sugar.

M- Thick, full bodied, oily slick, moderate carbonation.

O- I would avoid at all cost, maybe this is for some people though. Glad I at least tried it so I could experience it for myself. It was so hard to get through even splitting the bottle with a friend. Skip this milk stout and go for Left Hand's Nitro Milk Stout, which is perfectly balanced.

In closing, try it if you must. It was one of those pure curiosity things for me. Will never buy again.
