"Porter brewed with raspberries"- from 12oz bottle poured into pint glass
A: 1 finger toasted marshmallow colored head of small bubbles, doesn't completely dissolve away. Body is a deep reddish black, almost a dark raspberry. Little bits of lacing on the glass.
S: Sweet raspberries with a small hint of roast in the back. Maybe a tiny hint of dark chocolate. More like a raspberry soda than anything else.
T: Initial hit of raspberry syrup leads into roasted malt, maybe a slight touch of coffee. Not a robust roast mind you, but way more than the smell would indicate. Not much in the way of hops, just enough to dry out the finish. Raspberries add some sweetness to the middle. A tiny hint of dark chocolate in the middle-end. Finishes dry and with an after taste of the roasted malt, with no raspberries in the finish.
MF: A little thinner than I would have liked, and pretty flat by the end of the glass.
D: Drinkable, and probably a good complement to dessert, but can be worked on. I could only take one in a sitting, and wouldn't seek this out again.
The second raspberry-themed beer I have tried from Southern Tier (the other being the summer complement to this, the Raspberry Wheat, with an identical raspberry flavor). I'm unimpressed by this beer, mainly because I can't really think of a place where this beer would fit. I wouldn't use this to convert people into porter lovers, as it's not a good example of the style. People who are into "fruity" beers might be turned off by the roasted malt. It functions best as a dessert beer, but in that regard, I don't really feel that the chocolatiness of the roasted malt exerts itself nearly enough.

Pouring a cellar temp bottle into a pint glass.
Pours a rich dark brown with some mahogany highlights on the edges of the glass. Minimal creamy beige head foams up and remains a thin surface layer.
Aroma is mild with raspberry and chocolate almost like a fruit filled candy, maybe the fruit paste kind not the gel.
First sip reveals a very light and thin body and tiny gentle rolling carbonation.
Flavor is similar to the nose, with a mild overall profile, but I get some roasted malt and dry baker's chocolate. These flavors roll to sweet raspberry notes. Finish is also a little dry.
Not a flawed brew but not overly interesting. It held up pretty well over time, but I wonder if it was a little more bold fresh?
