*This bottle was personally aged in my cellar for 3 years.

Pours a reddish brown mahogany in color w/ a 1/4 finger white head that leaves minimal lacing. Aromas of brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, maple, and a touch of pumpkin puree. The taste is of brown sugar/cinnamon/nutmeg up front, and closes w/ mild pumpkin in the background. Clean and crisp. I drank this bomber with ease.

Overall, age has transformed this good pumpkin beer into almost a cinnamon roll beer. Interesting how this one aged.

Big thanks to Sliverx for this one. Need it for the tick...

A: Pours a nice translucent light amber with very little head. There are just a few bubbles along the edges of the glass. No lacking as it drinks.

S: the nose is candies sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and mild banana.

T: this beer is sweet to start, a touch fruity and some mild banana. The spices come on strong next, with a big dose of nutmeg. I get some cinnamon, but this is nutmeg like whoa. The finish is sweet, spicy, and boozy.

M: medium bodied beer. It hits the palate, takes control, and moves off. I get some lingering spice and alcohol on the back end.

O: decent beer for a fall/pumpkin seasonal. But it's mega sweet (as is to be expected from southern tier), and the nutmeg can get a bit intense at points.

I really searched for this one during my pumpkin ale kick this fall, but came up empty-handed. But thanks to the master of mutton-chops, Dave, I now have pumpkin beer royalty in my glass as we speak. Cheers!

Brewed seven months before the date of this tasting (“DOB – 09/12/12”).

A: Pours a brilliant, completely transparent orange with an impossible amount of carbonation – looks like a freshly-shaken snowglobe. The head looks about the same, sizzling, popping, and dropping as soon I finish the pour, though the storm of carbonation rising up through the glass keep some nice retention afloat.

S: An aromatic treat; each whiff garners rich, bready, spicy aromas of cinnamon coffee cake, pecan, baked pumpkin, and toasted pie crust. As inviting a nose as I could imagine, without giving off that syrupy character that many sweet beers tend to do. Finally, a beer that truly nails the pumpkin pie aroma.

T: A strong pumpkin flavor hits first, fleshy and sweet, with that dull, earthy twang of the real thing – no canned pie filling here. This is a sweet palate, sure, but it never gets cloying; it gets close, though, as pecan pie, buttery brown sugar, and sugar cookie tastes build on top of the pumpkin base. Piney, herbal hops help cut the sweetness, propping up the cinnamon, allspice, and slight alcoholic tastes at the back of the palate. Finishes with a dry, hoppy, and grainy taste, like a pilsner with more lingering sugar – it’s a dessert beer from start to finish.

M: Medium body with a small amount of carbonation (really just enough to keep it from being too sugar-centric). Nothing seems syrupy about this beer, which is a welcome change from sweet beers like Crème Brulee.

O: Pumking is the definitive pumpkin beer for a reason; pouring a glass immediately calls for turkey and yams. Southern Tier, welcome to my November lineup.

One of the best pumpkin beers of the fall season. There does not appear to be a lot of actual pumpkin involved, but the beer is spiced very nicely. On top of that, the 8.6 alcohol percentage is blended very well. This is one of the lightest pumpkin beers out there but it makes up for it in spice.

600ml bottle served in a thimbler.

2012 Edition.

A: Pours a liverly slightly hazy orange color forming a small light yellow creamy head. Low retention and only few lacings left

S: Lovely sweet and spicy in the nose. A cinnamon bomb. Strong notes of caramel, sweet grains and pumpkin. Smells like a pumpkin pie... Lovely stuff

T: Sweet upfront. Cinnamon, cloves, caramel, caramel malts, pumpkin pie, herbs. Notes of yeasts and mild flowery and mild bitter hops in the end

M: Medium body and carbonation. Very spicy aftertaste

O: Good drinkability. Its sweetness and spiceness does not compromise it. Excellent ale. I couldn't imagine that a pumpkin ale could be so good

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/26/2012. Pours fairly crystal clear golden amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of huge pumpkin pie, gingerbread, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, clove, caramel, pie crust, and light herbal. Insanely amazing aromas with outstanding balance, complexity, and strength of malt and spice notes. Taste of pumpkin pie, gingerbread, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, brown sugar, pie crust, caramel, and light herbal. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of pumpkin pie, gingerbread, nutmeg, cinnamon, light clove, brown sugar, pie crust, and light herbal on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic flavor balance and complexity; with an outstanding balance of malt and spices; and zero cloying sweetness present after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium full bodied; with a slick and lightly syrupy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a world class pumpkin ale. Incredible balance and complexity of malt, pumpkin, and spice flavors; and insanely easy to sip on. A very incredible pumpkin ale offering, and one of the best ever made without a doubt.

Pumpkin orange with decent clarity. Only a slight haze. Not much haze, but a little. Not much head either. Sits still and jeweled, like an amber gemstone.

Brown sugar, cinnamon, caramel syrup, vanilla, pumpkin flesh, and a hint of nutmeg. Has a delectable aroma of pie crusts and pie spices. Buttery and flaky cracker, and a little graham. Mind you, this has mellowed for about six months, but there is NO trace of alcohol. NONE.

Lots of flaky pie crust, cinnamon, brown sugar, buttery caramel, and hints of nutmeg, pumpkin, and vanilla. The buttery quality almost reminds me of buttered popcorn. Or, maybe Corn Pops. Not the most pumpkin-y example, but certainly not a spice bomb. AND, there's no disputing its deliciousness. The alcohol is quite subdued, except for some spicy fusel leading up to the finish. Ends with more of that pie crust note and latent sweetness.

Remarkably disguised strength in this aged version. Medium body with some creaminess, pretty much medium carbonation (a tad restrained). So drinkable at this strength.

This beer gets a lot of hate, and to me, for no apparent reason. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the reverence this beer gets with drinkers is an embellishment. Regardless, this is still a most enjoyable pumpkin ale with blended spices, brown sugar notes, vanilla, and creaminess in the body. Would love to try the oak-aged version.

The beer is slightly hazy and autumnal orange colored with a soapy white head. The aroma offers Fall spice, pumpkin bread, brown sugar, rum, malt, cinnamon, pie. Wow. Fabulous scents coming from this beer. Delicious flavor. How is it possible I haven't crossed paths with this beer before? So complex and wonderful. Great feel as well. Thick and syrupy. Not cloying, but sweetness is present throughout. A great beer to split with a few buddies.

Presentation: Bottle is very decorative with awesome graphics on the front and wealth of info on the back including a story about the beer, detailed info on the beer, proper glassware. Everything is painted on. Very nicely done!!!

Appearance: Poured out of a 22 oz. bomber into a 16 oz. Goblet as recommended on the bottle. Pours out a copper amber color with a 1 finger cream white foam head. Head retention minimal sticking around about a 1 min before fading into a thin foam ring. Lacing was OK.

Smell/Aroma: Smells of fresh baked pumpkin pie with hints of nutmeg and cinnamon. A definite vanilla scent is also very detectable. Smell is delicious!!

Flavor/Taste: Taste is right on point. Tastes of fresh pumpkin pie with the cinnamon and nutmeg right up front and a custard/vanilla taste coming through about mid way. A homemade biscuit-like crust flavor is also very detectable as this warms. Not much for hops but they are definitely there as an underlying bitterness can be tasted. Alcohol is masked very well. Maybe a bit much in the spice department for me but I wont complain much.

MouthFeel/Drinkability: Medium bodied with a fair amount of carbonation. This is a very drinkable beer although at 8.6% you may be a bit tipsy after a couple of these.

Overall/Comments: Very solid beer with a great flavor/smell profile. Maybe a bit much on the spices IMO but still one of the better pumpkin ales that I have had. Classified as a Pumpkin Ale at 8.6% ABV(label states this is Imperial). Consumed 11/22/12

Poured into a goblet

A- pours a bright golden color with some orange hue a a decent size foamy white head that quickly reduces leaving short lasting lace.

S- I had heard that this one smells like a real pumpkin pie, and I agree! The malt smells so identical to a graham cracker crust it is rediculous. The cinnamon and nutmeg are there, but the maltiness takes center stage on the aroma. Of the dozens of pumpkin beers I've had, none come this closes to smelling like pumpkin pie.

T- that graham cracker aroma follows into an identical taste. The malts provide a crisp wheaty, crackery backbone. This transitions into the pumpkin flavors. Notes ofnutmeg, clove, and cinnamon. The pumpkin is there and has more of a creamy pumpkin taste too it, which provides the 'pie' taste. The finish is slightly sweet-yet-dry with a malty linger on the palate.

M- medium body, low carbonation, slightly creamy mouthfeel with with a smooth finish.

O- I've tried a lot of pumpkin beers and this one differentiates itself from all others. It has a unique taste and is an awesome holiday beer. This one is very easy to drink, but to be enjoyed slowly.

Review from Notes:

This one I like out of the bevy of pumpkin type products. Lots of pumpkin pie like flavor, nice mouthfeel. Not overly sweet. Definitely can taste the actual pumpkin, so better balanced versus other of this style. Not overwhelmed by the pie spices for a change. A good dessert option - not something to drink a lot of or very often.

650ml brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into an Odell pilsner glass in me friend's gaff in high altitude Fort Collins, Colorado. Reviewed live. Expectations are fairly high given its reputation.

Served straight from the refrigerator. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

Paired with tortilla crisps.

A: Pours a one finger head of beige colour, nice thickness, nice cream, and fair retention. Body colour is a very pale copper. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Somewhat dull.

Sm: Heavy pumpkin gourd. Some spice, maybe some gourd. Generic middling malts. An average strength aroma.

T: Tastes like pumpkin. Some brown sugar. Gourd. Hints of spices. Balanced but lacking. I do like it, but it is horrifically simple.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Good carbonation and thickness. Good palate presence.

Dr: Arguably simple but still satisfying; if you want pumpkin, you'll get it. Drinkable and enjoyable but lacking complexity and subtlety. I like it, but I doubt I'd have it again.

High B-

Having survived the Mayan apocalypse I decided to celebrate with a special bottle of Pumpking. I’ve heard a lot about this one.

Appearance: It’s a pretty beer. Pours a crystal clear burnt orange with plenty of foamy head and carbonation. The head sticks to the sides nicely. It looks very ‘clean’.

Smell: Pumpkin pie are the first two words that come to mind. Incredibly sweet smelling, and some prominent pie spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, etc. Pumpkin, honeysuckle and banana present as well. Nice backbone of malts but the pie scents overpower. Very strong but pleasant and appetizing.

Taste: Matches the smells, a lot of bready, sweet grains but a good amount of bitter to match it, with a spicy hops finish. Alcohol well hidden for an 8.6% beer. The pie spices again linger on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Thick and somewhat chewy. It’s got a lot of body to it. A proper moderate carbonation.

Overall: Yea, it’s a good one. Overall I’d say it’s just very clean with lots of strong flavors but nothing really overpowers anything else. Tough to find any complaints, although some may find it too sweet (I think pumpkin beers should be sweet.) One of the top pumpkin beers I can remember trying out.

A – A lovely deep copper appearance with tinges of bright orange and yellow playing around the edges in the direct sunlight. A tall bone-white head that clings lovingly to the side of the glass just makes it look about perfect. Beautiful looking beer.

S – It smells like pumpkin bread or pumpkin pie or pumpkin…something. I’m leaning towards pumpkin bread. The smell is just absolutely delightful, what you hope a pumpkin beer smells like. Creating a good pumpkin beer is such a difficult thing to do and this just smells like how you dreamed it would be your first time with a pumpkin beer. Yes, please.

T – The taste is basically an exact replica of the nose but with a bit more alcohol on the palate and a really intensified pumpkin taste. The taste is not absolutely outstanding but it is easily one of the best pumpkin beers that I have had. I get that it is doing exactly what you hope a pumpkin beer would do to your taste buds and dancing all over them with pumpkin flavor, but at the same time I find myself not absolutely loving it. It’s good, no doubt, but it isn’t fantastic…but you know what, it’s growing on me big time. With each consecutive sip I am enjoying it a bit more than the last sip. And by the end…ahh, what a lovely pumpkin beer. I am sorry for having doubted you for a moment my love. Don’t hate that.

M – The mouthfeel is good actually. It has a fuller body with lighter carbonation which is all the things that you want from a well crafted pumpkin ale. Very nice.

O – Overall this is probably the second best pumpkin beer that I have had after DFH Punkin (and the two are incomparable). It is a very good beer and I will certainly come back to it but it doesn’t enter into my top echelon of beers. Nonetheless, a big tip of my cap to southern tier. Very well done.

Poured into a snifter during a tasting with my dad and brother.

Pours an attractive amber/orange color with minimal white head.

Smells fantastic. Slightly burnt toast, but everything is sweet and spicy. I get sweet malt, cinnamon and nutmeg spices. I really get a strong gingersnap aromas.

Flavors match the nose, basically. Gingersnap is not as dominate and but or still tastes like cinnamon and nutmeg, sweet malt in the background.

Mouthfeel is crisp but smooth, medium carbonation. Decent hop aftertaste? Prob my least favorite characteristic. Takes little away.

Overall, this is my favorite pumpkin beer, for that I have to give it a high overall rating. Very tasty. Some will disagree, but I'm a huge fan. Cheers.

22oz bomber poured into Revolution imperial pint glass:

Pours a very clear bright pale orange with a two finger frothy off white head that slowly recedes to a patchy quarter finger creamy head. Aroma is graham cracker crust, pumpkin pie spices, and vegetable sweetness. Big sweetness up front is followed by mouth coating spices. Like drinking liquid pumpkin pie. No perceptible alcohol. Mouthfeel is exceptional. Smooth and creamy, just a little sweater and it would be cloying. First time reviewing Pumking after having it numerous times. Among the best pumpkin beers available. Big and bold like Southern Tier does best. I can see how some would be put off by Pumking, its a love/hate beer.

I went to my local specialty beer store one week in October and they had a huge display of the pumking, probably 30 or 40 cases. I'm usually not too big on pumpkin beers, but I grabbed a couple bombers and found out why the call it the pum KING! This beer is like pumpkin pie in a bottle! I went back in a week later and they only had 3 bottles left, so I cleared them out...
I had the last one chillin' in the back of the fridge until tonight.
I cracked it open and you can smell this one from across the room. It has the pumpkin, the graham cracker, some nutmeg, and then a nice smooth vanilla finish. Some pumpkin beers have too much pumpkin or too much weird spice flavor, but this beer has a nice balance and masks the 8% ABV very well.
I will be on the lookout for this one next year!

This is my favorite pumpkin beer several years running. Several other pumpkin beers were talked up this season, but none of them truly lived up to the hype besides the Pumking!

Appearance: Pours a golden orange with a decent foamy head. It has generous lacing that lasts as you consume the beer.

Smell: Pumpkin is definitely a dominant aroma in this beer (it’s like liquid pumpkin pie), along with some spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg.

Taste: Malty, sweet and balanced, you can pick up on several flavors in this brew including pumpkin, caramel, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.

Mouthfeel: Has medium carbonation and a medium body. Very smooth and tasty.

Overall: My favorite pumpkin beer several years running. No doubt that the pureed pumpkin in the brew contributes to the awesomeness of Pumking!

I ran into this delicious pumpkin beer at one of my favorite watering holes, Four Moon, which is around the corner from me. Wouldn't luck have it that after having a couple and promising to be back for more with the next moon rising, there was none to be had. After weeks of searching and kicking the cats I stumbled onto it. My favorite place to go for ribs is Twin Anchors. There may be better ribs but not better establishments. By accident last week I stumbled in and found my self looking at their beer menu. "Hey, bartender, it says here that you have Pumpking here". I'm sure that the menu isn't up to date but "Oh yes it is. We have several cases of it". What? I'll take 4 to go and I"ll be back!

Poured into a snifter from the bottle, Pumpking was a copper color with a very slight off-white head. It leaves a generous lacing around the glass to note staying power. The aroma is graham cracker, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pretty much everything else about pumpkin pie except pumpkin. In the initial taste, one get sour pumpkin, cinnamon toward the back of the throat, a heavy dose of clove, and a hint of nutmeg. One gets a little of the sliminess of pumpkin in the mouthfeel and a certain degree of acidity in the slightly thicker than average ale. For my money, I think this is the best pumpkin ale you can buy despite a lack of pumpkin in most phases of the beer. It is a polarizing beer to many because pumpkin is masked to a great degree. Allow the other elements of pumpkin pie appear nicely though.

Honey color and clear with white head that dissipates quickly.

Smell is marshmellow, pumpkin, and spices.

Taste is like pumpkin pie or bread. Starts out sweet, but not overpoweringly so. Pumpkin breadiness, banana, spice, and cream. Bitterness comes in late to remind you this is beer. Very nice. Got better and more complex as it warmed.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation.

Overall this is a holiday winner. Definitely worth a try even if not your style beer.

smells like pie crust more than it does spices. very bready, nice!
hoppy bitterness up front (mild), sweet malty cinnamon blend, pie spices, bready finish.
