Notes:
Scotland’s rugged soils are not conducive to the cultivation of hops that grow readily in England, so during times of political strife Scotland’s southern neighbor would deprive Scottish brewers of their hops. The resourceful Scot turned to his native heather as a flavoring for his ales. Heather grows wild in the rockbound highlands and when added to the beer yields a silky aromatic result. Our Scottish Ale is brewed with a large amount of both malted barley and heather producing a rich-bodied ale with a sweet finish true to the style.

22oz brown bomber. MacFoochie's pours a very deep, dark brown, that's seemingly black with rich ruby red hues around the edges of the glass, and topped with a creamy tan head that settles to nice lacing with ample retention and a playful stick.

Rich malty aroma that's a bit smoky, with some peat, toffee, touch of steel and a pleasant herbal / floral finish.

Silky smooth on the palate with a creamy back. Carbonation breaks through and lifts a savory mix of herbal and spice notes through a rich and chewy malt profile. Very low bitterness. Nice juicy fruitiness with some sweet grape-like vinous notes right in the middle. Light berry esters. Milk chocolate within the malty sweetness, toffee, with some background deep roastiness in the form of coffee grinds lurking in the corners. Earth and some nutty flavors too. Wonderful peat accents blend with heather flavors in a steeped tea-like fashion. As this blends with the emerging 7+% ABV, it evokes suggestions of whiskey. Dry finish with lingering peat and heather notes, and a fumy alcohol exhale on the breath.

This is a big, complex and malty brew, but it's also well balanced and extremely pleasing to the palate, with perfect use of heather and smoked malts. Way too easy to drink, so share this one with friends ... unless you're reviewing it right now, alone, like me!

Damn ... you ... MacFoochie!

Into a pint glass:

A: dark brown body with a finger of tan foamy head, no lacing

S: smoky/ roasty through light coffee, light chocolate, and malts

T: mostly sweet, eventually gets some bitter qualities through previously mentioned flavors

M: medium, pretty smooth, sessionable, bitter yet somewhat sweet aftertaste and finish

O: pretty good Scottish ale I`d probably have again

Dark, dark brown with ruby highlights. Creamy tan head emits lacy arms grasping for the glass top.

Aroma is deep and rich - lots of malt, rich fruit and subtle peat smoke. Tastes like it smells but with a mineral "cleanliness" in back - I'm guessing that's that heather? Plush, creamy mouthfeel that's almost as good as I could possibly imagine.

This was a fun one. Not only was it a great beer but we only had one glass so my wife and I passed it back and forth in front of a campfire. Good camping beer.

Poured a 1/2" latte head of brief life. The body in masstone is a deep burnt umber brown and held to the light there is zero light penetration. Smells of toasted malt. The taste has moderately rich malt which is followed by a dark cocoa finish. Kind of reminds me of a lighter porter. Decent beer, easy drinking, but to me it's not a standout of the Scotch ales.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass

Appearence: Dark Red almost brown appearence. light yellowish/reddish head, and ok lacing.

Smell: Smokey malts an carmels? Reminded me of a true BBQ type smell.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, but not very well balanced. Smokey flavor is evident even as an after taste.

Overall: It was a decent beer. Something I would sip on perhaps while cooking on the grill or BBQing. Not my first choice, but if it was there I would have it again.

A- Short off white head leaves a collar on top of a red hued dark brown beer. Thick alcohol legs with minimal lacing.

S- Deep caramels. Malty sweetness.

T- Cola, slight oxidation. Some chocolate taste on the backend. Well hidden alcohol, very smooth.

M- medium mouthfeel, low carbonation.

D/O- overall one of the better Scottish ales I've had. No bottle date but I'm thinking this has a year or two on it...not negatively affected though, actually compliments it I feel. Thanks mikeyv35.

pours a good looking deep brown with thick tightly bubbled khaki head.
in the aroma oddly enough, the stand out, with a sort of a yellow flower smell, as in floral butt tending towards a buttery aroma. hopefully you can see what i mean. there is also toffe, a bit of port wine and a whisp of smoke.
sweet toffee in the mouth, with caramel as well. you get some floral notes mid palate with an almost honied character. touches of smoke and bitterness move in behind that. the smoke creeps in especially with some warmth. seems just a little bit unbalanced to me, in favor of sweetness.
the body is on just the thinner side of medium bodied with soft carbonation.
overall, a nice little (or big as it were)scottish ale, and pleasant enough to sip on, just a touch to sweet for me.

Ap. Basic black with nice tan head, but didn't last long.
Sm. Interesting. maybe smokey, earthy, some faint faint chocolate. Can't find the hops.
Ta. Same...slight smokey, malt, roasted, milky even, leads to brief coffee flavor and then a sweet finish.
Mf. thick and sticky
Dr. A big beer, filling, plently of flavor, but kind of muddled. It's good, but the flavors are so blended that I can't sort it out. It will NOT be a problem to finish off the bomber.
