Scotland’s rugged soils are not conducive to the cultivation of hops that grow readily in England, so during times of political strife Scotland’s southern neighbor would deprive Scottish brewers of their hops. The resourceful Scot turned to his native heather as a flavoring for his ales. Heather grows wild in the rockbound highlands and when added to the beer yields a silky aromatic result. Our Scottish Ale is brewed with a large amount of both malted barley and heather producing a rich-bodied ale with a sweet finish true to the style.

A - Poured from a bottle dated “ best by 7/1/18” into the test glass. Deep dark oak color, gently carbonated, an off white cap is quick to leave.
S - Roasted malt, a bit of peat, some brown sugar, and earthiness from hop choice.
T - Sweet caramel malt, dry roast matches the sweetness with good balance.
M- Medium in body, sweet start, then a slick look the runs across the palate, the linger is dry and malt rich
O - A rich offering, tad sweet but well worth seeking out

Pours a dark brown color with a short creamy beige head.

The aroma is malty sweet. Big brown bread notes. A bit nutty with hints of caramel. Very subtle smoke and a lemony sourness in the finish.

The taste is big brown toasted bread. Quite earthy. Some nuttiness and hints of ash and smoke. Light tea notes.

The feel is moderate with fizzy carbonation. Mainly sweet on the palate but finishes with a light roasted bitterness.

An earthy, malty brew. No out of the park flavors but it's well made.

Served on-tap in a Shaker pint at Atlantic Brewing home base.

A: Garnet with ruby edges with short cap of off-white head with a thin incomplete line of lacing.

S: Malty dark fruit aromas, whiff of sweet cherry alcohol

T: Very malty with delicious prune and raisin dark fruit flavors layered on a deftly managed dark maltiness. Very low bitterness and a fair amount of alcohol booziness. No yeast character. Enjoyable but I wish it was a little lower in alcohol heat and showed a bit more finesse.

M: Very smooth and creamy with lowish carbonation and medium-full body.

O: I am glad they ditched the peat that was present in earlier versions. Delicious beer -- but I bet the 90-/ version may be even tastier: less of an alcoholic hammer. Still very enjoyable.

This is the second offering from these folks that I must assume is spoiled. The pour is dark with minimal head. Aroma is vinous with a strong peat pretense. Flavor is that of red wine that's opened too long - slightly vinegar, and sour grape. The fizziness of carbonation just make this seem like a bad wine cooler. Really a shame, as Scottish ales are one of my favorite styles, and I had big hope. But between this and the Real Ale, I'm thinking either they have serious quality control issue, or just make really awful beer.

Poured a deep chocolate brown with a 1F head in a Gordon Thistle.

Deep Aroma:fruit, prune, sweet toffee, candy.

The taste follows the aroma, however there an added flavor of smoked peat, and heather, the latter comes out with warming. A first, I didn't like the smoked peat, and it seemed to bring imbalance to the flavor. After a while, I began to enjoy the peat and the heather. The approach is quite different than other American brewer's Scottish ale. This is quite complex, and I can't recall such a pronounced smoked peat flavor in a Scottish Ale.

There is also sweetness, toffee, candy, and prune ( or dried fruit) in the taste which is finished by a good bitterness.

There is a traditional approach to this beer. It's complex and a sipper. Worth checking out.

Purchased at the brewery. Poured into a tulip. Pours stout-black with a finger of tan head that slowly dissipates and leaves a little lace. Smell is roasty, roasty, roasty. Taste is roasty too, malt and roast. Mouth is good. Overall, this is not at all what I expected from a scotch ale. Not that I'm all that familiar with them, but this seems just like a light-bodied roasty stout to me.

L - Dark brown, a little ruby. Short, but persistent tan head.
S - Rich medium roasted malts. Lots of dark fruit - raisin and prune. Caramel and brown sugar. Lightly smokey.
T - No surprise - rich, sweet, and malty with little hoppiness. A little darker than I expected from the aroma. Chocolate, even dark chocolate. Dark fruit.
