Have made it a habit of stopping in here anytime I go into Chicago. This place has to be the most comfortable brewpub I have ever had the pleasure of drinking in. Dogs are welcome, house brew is delicious (IPA), guest taps are glorius (Allagash Curieux). The brewery tour is a must. Really makes you imagine what your homebrew setup could only be. Great change of pace compared to most of the other local brewpubs where teenage girls who think Blue Moon is an import is all the conversation to be had with the waitstaff. Don't get me wrong, that isn't always a bad thing :) Anyways, for anyone around Chicago who has been putting off stopping in here or for anyone coming to the area and really want a different experience at a brewpub, do not overlook this place. A+++

Lunar is heaven on earth. It is very reasonable and excellent. House brews change weekly and guest taps too. Lunar has a very good selection of beers. Service is wonderful and friendly. Bartenders Mark and Chuck know their stuff and are good dudes. Charlie the owner is a great guy too.
Price is what one would expect $5-6 for a lager/IPA/ Stout and $7-9 for specialty beers.
No food but it's BYOF (Bring your own Food), they have plenty of take out menus or bring in home cooked meals. I brought i a crock-pot of smoked chili for the entire place it was a good time.
Long story short come to Lunar and enjoy!

Fantastic! This was the 233rd brewpub I've visited and can say it is the best dive/corner bar brewpub I've been to. I had full beer samples of their IPA, Belgian Double, Mango XMas, and Stout and they were all excellent. I'm still amazed that such an underwhelming location produces such great beers. Also worth noting is the great guest taps and bottles. Without their own beers, you could make a case that this is a great beer bar. One major drawback for me was they were charging $10 for a 33cl Westmalle and $18 for the 3 Floyds Alpha Claus seasonal beer. I chatted up a guy at the bar and wanted him to try something other than the house tripple but $10 for a Westmalle is too steep. I was introduced to the owner Charlie. It turns out this used to be their hangout and when it went up for sale, him and a couple of his buddies purchased it. They could clean up the inside a bit and maybe turn the heat up slightly- it was cold inside. In any event, if you have the opportunity to make it to Lunar while in Chicago, it's a must do!

This is my kinda bar! It's small, cozy, and the people who work there are really laid back. There is a space up front for sitting at the bar, and a space further back for bands to play.
The bar looks like it has a full assortment of booze in a addition to a large number of beers on tap. They had quite a few really nice guest beers on tap and in bottles.
I was extremely impressed with the service and the beers. Since they dont' offer food we had pizza delivered to us and they pulled tables together for us. I was there for my bachelor party, and we had a great time. I am really, really impressed with this joint despite high prices!

You want to find the ultimate mix of corner bar with that homey feel and those high end really tasty craft brews? Then you want to stop here. Lunar is a great beer their house brews are fabulous. The guest taps are a rotating list of excellent choices. Heck the bottle list alone makes this place worth the stop. Ok so they serve frozen pizza but who cares. you come for the beer and the friendship not the food. Brad the brewer is always looking and experimenting on new ideas but their normal line up of constant and seasonal is out of this world.. in Lunar orbit so to say! ;) They are not a snob bar by any means. Drink a little kings if you want. Drink a A miller like if y ou like. if that is what you need to do. But you you want then expand your world Try one of the awesome brews that this talented crew creates. Stop in and say Hi to Chuck Charlie and Brad.

One of the best things about getting out of Oklahoma for a week is visiting great drinking places in other cities. One such place is Lunar. I visited on 4/21/04. As other reviewers have noted it has the "corner bar" atmosphere, darts, jukebox, Cubs on the tv, etc. There are no yuppity, gratuitous displays of brewing equipment (that speaks nothing of quality). The only indication that they brew there is the faint smell of malt mash in the air, and the crescent moon LUNAR tap handles. Beer quality was all around excellent. These guys know how craft beer should taste. No frills, no prentention or snob appeal, reasonable prices and attention to quality.
They had about 7 or 8 house beers on tap, including an exceptional Columbus-hopped IPA, a Cascade-hopped American Pale Ale, a smooth, session-worthy British Bitter and a nitro-pushed Oatmeal Stout. No house brewed Belgian ales were available that day, as far as I could tell.
They do not sell the "flight of tasters" platter that typical brewpubs do. BUT, they do give you FREE samples on-demand of whatever draft brew you want to try. I purposely limited tasting to a select few styles, rather than bothering the bartender to mooch all 8 beers. I'd gladly pay to get a few ounces of all their house beers to try in one swoop. On the other hand, it is awfully nice of them to offer free swigs.
Have a bite to eat before you go--they are not a restaurant. Frozen pizza was available according to a sign behind the bar. That's not what they are about, so don't hold that against them.
I unconditionally recommend Lunar as a place to have great beer and good conversation.

One of my favorite local places to go to. There is no kitchen because that is where they are brewing. Low lit atmosphere is perfect for just going in and having a couple of beers and enjoying them without all the raucous of annoying people talking about nothing. Large choice of craft beers definitely makes it easy for everyone to find something that they will like.

Awesome selections. House beers very good to excellent. Guest taps and bottle selections were slanted toward Belgians. Bartender was very knowledgable. Very comfortable atmosphere. I experienced the dart league as well, friendly group. I tried to expand their horizons a little....after quaffing the house beers that interested me, my last beer was a bottle of DeRanke XX, unfortunately didn't need the entire bottle (driving) so shared. Got two not bad's and an "I don't like" Definetly will return, turns out the place is close to friends house.

Just stopped by this place today. Parked in backed. Noted hops growing on the side of the place. Good sign. Walk in and it looks like a regular hole in the wall bar. First tap I see is LaGunits Brown Shugga'. This place is gonna be good. So its a microbrew with an amazing guest tap list. Highlights include Surly Furious, Dark Horse Perkulator, Backwoods Bastard, etc. Bartender mentioned they had a barrel of Darkness in the back and were finding the right time to tap it. Great local place with a top notch guest list. Would certainly go back.

In reading the previous reviews of this place I find that I don't have much new to add... only that I agree with almost everything that you have already read above. If strength is in numbers, however, I'll just jump in and affirm the great things about this place so those of you who haven't given it a try will do so. This is a very unique place in that while it is a "brewpub" it is not at all like the others in the Chicago area. It has a wonderful corner tavern atmosphere where your non-beer friends (if any) will feel perfectly comfortable ordering a mixed drink and catching the game. The staff is totally down-to-earth (especially the Monday night bartender whose name unfortunately escapes me). I love their beers and the few I've had that I didn't care for were honestly not bad... just not to my taste. Usually at brewpubs, the beers I don't like are just plain BAD... not so with this place. Their beers have such unique characteristics that they are to be appreciated even if not personally enjoyed. That, I feel, is the true measure of quality and creativity.
