Notes:
Like traditional pale ales, Tankhouse Ale has a deep copper-red colour. We use five different malts to produce a complex malty texture. The most dominant character of our Pale Ale is the hop. The spicy Cascades is used to give an assertive hop flavour, aroma and bitterness to our ale. The result is a satisfying and complex-tasting beer. Our brewmaster developed this recipe 20 years ago and it has remained his favorite drink of choice.

On tap in a half pint glass at the Mill St Brewery in Ottawa.
Nice orange-reddish liquid with a fair amount of carbonation, formed a 2 cm creamy head that dissipated soon.
Smell is that of caramel malt, some sweetness and a bit of fruitiness.
Mouthfeel is soft and dry, light bodied. Tastes pretty much like so many other beers in that same style that I have tried. The hops are pretty well thrown in and create a good balance. Quite sessionable.
Not memorable, but not bad at all. I'd have no problem drinking it again and again. Just not unforgettable.

An amber clear ale, off-white with good lacing and some curtains.
Smelling citric, lemon, grape-fruit and pine needles.
Tasting of toffee, grape-fruit juice and crushed lemon seed.
Little carbonation, small bubbles, smooth with a medium body, a dry finish.
A good well balanced APA. Nice hop charatcer.

Draft
Appearance – Clear copper colour with an average size fizzy off white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation visible and there is a decent amount of lacing. The head lasted for 6 minutes before it was gone.
Smell - Malts, caramel, hops, cereal
Taste & Mouth - The beer has an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, caramel and some cereal. There is some hop bitterness.. but not as much as I remember tasting when I had it previously from a bottle. There is also a bit of a grassiness. It ends with a malty sweet aftertaste with just a touch of bitterness.
Overall – This one wasn't as good as I remember it being. Perhaps I ran into an older out of date keg. Regardless, it's still one of the better better beers made in Ontario.

Clear dark copper colour with a smooth offwhite head. Poor head retention.
Malty aroma with a distinct grassy hoppiness. A touch of citrus. Interesting.
Moderately malty with some nice caramel tones. Moderately-low bitterness with a dose of resinous, citrus hops. Okay.
Medium body with moderately high carbonation. A little gassy.
A decent APA. A little middle of the road but it ticks most of the necessary boxes.

On tap at Marce in Toronto. Pours dark amber with a thick white head and lively carbonation. Aroma is of caramel malt and hints of hops. Medium, tangy body. Grapefruit hops dominate the palate while caramel malt provide some balance. Medium finish is dry. Nothing special brew.

I had a large draft of this on a recent trip to Toronto. I tried a lot of beers on that trip. I didn't love any of them but this was a little better than most.
Appearance is a copper to amber color. Darkish head with a lot of active carbonation.
Aroma was more malty than hoppy, especially for a pale ale but overall a nice aroma.
Flavor was also a bit more malty than hoppy but pretty balanced and not bad.
Overall a pretty good beer. Nothing outstanding but good.

The first widely available APA in Ontario, and my introduction to Centennial hops. A frequent "session ale", seems odd to be reviewing it now after so many years of enjoying it...
Dark red-hued amber with a long-lasting, cream-coloured head. Decent level of carbonation and pleasant mouthfeel; no oiliness whatsoever. Hoppy aroma, pure "C" with citrus and pine notes. Well balanced taste, with caramelized malt sweetness blending into a "west-coast" bitter hop finish.
Excellent flavour palate for 5.2% ABV sessionability. A very drinkable beer that should appeal to many.

Pint at The Manx in Ottawa. From notes.
A - Poured a dark copper with no visible carbonation, no head as it was poured all the way to the top, no lacing and no retention. Bright.
S - Fruity hops with fruity malts as well. Caramel came out too. Nice and inviting with balance.
T - Piney and fruity hops. Fruity malts with caramel, dark bread, and biscuits as well. Kinda like an ESB.
M - Mild carbonation, medium body and a slight bitterness in the finish.
O/D - Less hops than I remember in the bottle. It's quite nice and seshable while being smooth and flavourful.

Pours a deep amber-brown colour with off-white head. Good retention and some lacing. Smell is of huge caramel malt and some hops. Bitterness is up front in the taste, with tons of malty sweetness. This is almost like a mix between an amber ale and a pale ale. This beer frequently saves me from horrible tap lists in Toronto. I never seek it out, but will always order it at non-beer bars in the city if they have it. Probably the beer I drink the most of.

I was in Ottawa this past week for business and I soon realized how bad the craft beer scene was there. Bad, really bad....until I stumbled upon this gem. Finally, hops are alive and well in Canada.
Poured from tap in 2 different restaurants in Ottawa Canada into Mill Street heavy duty pint glasses.
A: A dark copper reddish color with a one finger off white head. Full full glass lacing.
S: Toasted smell with caramel and toffee coupled with some fruit smells and a big floral hop nose. Very nice.
T: The floral hops provide a spicy hop bite up front that gets melded together with the fruit flavors of apple and cherry. The toasted caramel and toffee malt put a sweetness to the beer that offset the still present hops. Finish turns bitter with floral hops sticking around at the end to get mellowed by a hint of sweet. Wow, thank god I found this beer. Wonderful!
M: Medium, coating, prickly, bitter and no alcohol.
D: High, really high. I had a couple at each sitting and could have drank them all night.
Overall I was surprised to see this listed as a pale ale, to me it was squarely an amber with the big toasted malts. Either way, this is a really good local beer that I will seek out when I get there again. Very, very good beer. Well done guys, you saved my trip from being beer hell.

a - dark copper colour, pitcher held a cloudier look in the centre
s - excellent smell; hints of something sweet and roasted
t - bitter, probably accentuated by the other flavours and the roasted malt
m - much sweeter, taste of apples and hops are incredibly pleasing
d - a bit too much carbonation for my liking, but the amazing smell and tastes make it very drinkable

Got this when I ducked into a cafe in Baldwin Village to warm up on a chilly Toronto eve. Poured a clear amber with orange highlights into the standard pint glass, which retained fine ringed walls of foam. Aromas of nutty malt and floral hop; the palate was balanced, but the hops did take a bit of a backseat to the richness and depth of the malt frame. Well carbonated, medium body, and enough going on that I could drink this all night. Excellent maltier sessionable APA from Mill St. Brewing. The first Ontario Pale Ale I had and, after having a few others, seems to be a standout of this style in the region.

Served in a sleeve to me with a rich amber-red hue and a very light brown head that was quite stiff and left substantial lacing through the entire sitting. It was topped with an inviting and moderately complex nose which had hints of toffee and malt.
The beer was well balanced, with a nice bitter kick at the end which lingered. The malt was there, although not overpoweringly potent coupled with the toffee and a mild sweetness. The carbonation seemed normal and was exceedingly drinkable.
This beer has caused me to consider trying more of the Mill St. offerings that are available here in Manitoba.

This beer appears a clear dark reddish copper hue, with two fingers of creamy white head, which leaves a small ring of lace around the glass. It smells of sweet biscuit malt, caramel, and earthy, citrus hops. The taste is zingy lemon zest, bready malt, and grassy, weedy hops. The carbonation is a bit high, the body decently full, and it finishes off-dry, and with some noble hop essence lingering.

I've had this beer many times in a bottle, but then had it last night on tap at Chaucey's in London. Its a bit better on tap
Pours a dark amber/brown and is reddish against the light. Good head and it laces the glass as you drink it
Aroma is fruity, citrusy hops dominate
Flavour is very malty with good hop bitterness in the end. Burnt aftertaste. Hoppy, nutty, definately not a bland ale, there's a lot going on
Mouthfeel is very good, not too creamy, and not very watery. Good amount of carbonation on tap, I think the bottle version has a little too much
Drinkability I suppose depends on my mood. I don't think I'd turn down this beer on tap very often tho

I tried this beer on May 13, 2008 at the "Elephant and Castle" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer was poured a translucent reddish-brown colour with a half-inch creamy tan coloured head. The aroma was a combination or raosted malt, and hops. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, with mild carbonation. The flavour was all about the hops. A nice bitter citrusy tang and a very good beer.

On tap at the brewery. Deep amber colour with a small white head. Lovely smell of caramel malts, grapefruit and pine needles. The aroma of caramel is reflected in the body, which also packs a nice level of floral bitterness thanks to the hops. Bready aftertaste with dried fruits. Medium body suits the beer well.

I tried this beer on tap at the Iron Works in Almonte ON. It's a nice pub right on the Mississippi River (not that one, it just has the same name). They only serve micro-brews there and fresh food. It's a rarity in these parts and I wonder why a small town like Almonte can do this but a cit of 800,000+ like Ottawa can't.
I've been a fan of this beer for over a year now but I never had the opportunity to try it on tap until now. It was a pint of heaven. Better, much better than in the bottle. Fresh hoppy loveliness. I can't go on because I'm going to black out thinking of how good it was.

Had on-tap in Windsor. Looks decent in the glass, it's a slightly hazy (but mostly clear) deep red/orange/brown, with a nice off-white head. Nose is cascade hops with pine, and malts underneath. Taste is heavy on the hops, with pine and sour citrus, and a nice lingering leafy hop finish. Mouthfeel is good. Nice brew; the low ABV makes it quite drinkable.

This was my first brew when landing in Toronto. The bartender pushed me towards this as a nice local. Copper with amber tints and a white head. Good retention and lacing. Floral and citrus hop aromas.
Grassy, citrus, and floral bite is somewhat smoothed out by an uneventful malt in the background.
A bit more carbonated than expected, but full flavored and tasty. A session brew that is worth several. A tad better than the run-of-the-mill APAs out there.

Light russet. Cushy aroma of cascades and warm dry-hopping. A wonderful inviting nose lets you down by the first taste slightly grainy and clunky in the mouth as a richer toffee caramel flavor builds. Finishes with the faintest hints of butter, which really do not corrupt the brew. The first half of this beer is rough on the palate, grainy and chalky while the second half is much more enjoyably Anglo: tasty, petite, drinkable. Mouthfeel retains some of the chalk-bits encountered on the palate. Drinkability leaves something to be desired.

Pours a reddish brown body, with a decent off white head and good lacing. Aroma was very nice. Lots of floral, fruity hop aroma, sweet malts, a tad citrusy. Taste and drinkability was great. Great session ale. Good balance of hops and malt. Fruity, sweet, nice graininess, end is a bit dry. Mouthfeel is soft. One of my favourites from Mill st.

I like this beer a lot more on tap than in the bottle. Overall, it just seems to have a more balanced flavour and aroma profile. The crisp Cascade hop aroma is still present, but there is a light maltiness that peeks through. Toffee and toasted malts are evident in the flavour, but it's still the bitterness that (rightly) dominates. Nice dry finish with some hop bitterness lingering on the palate. Head retention and lacing is much better.

Serving Type - 341ml bottle poured into a small pint glass.
Appearance - Pours a clear ,deep amber colour with about 2 fingers of slightly off white head which dissipates slowly, leaving behind some light lacing.
Smell - Light caramel and toffee notes. There's also a little bit of a grainy smell. Not a whole lot else maybe some light spice? (For a beer with a 'staggering' amount of hops the aroma is pretty faint)
Taste - Caramel and toffee mostly, but also a good deal of spice and grass and grain and general deliciousness. Not expecting that much from the nose, but this is really well balanced and surprisingly complex. There's a definite a bitter bite to it, but for an APA its extremely gentle.
Mouthfeel - Medium body, medium to low carbonation.
Overall - 3.75/5 One of my favorite regular Mill St. offerings. A well balanced and extremely drinkable APA.

A: Deep copper colour, very clear, pours a 1 inch head that then falls to a nice cream rim around the glace. Lacing is continuous throughout the drinking.
S: Spiciness, pine, a bit of caramel in the background
T: Some pine with a good malt backbone. You get an upfront bitterness then merging with some caramel and a bit of bread to finish with an equal part of dryness and sweetness.
M: Carbonation is great. Med-low mouthfeel.
O: This is by far one of my favorite Mill St. beers. It's a great pale ale which can be consumed as a session beer.
