Sorry to the other reviewers, I must have got a bad bottle. I took three sips and poured the rest down the drain. I can easily duplicate the flavor by mixing ginger, a little honey, some grain alcohol, and a squeeze of grapefruit into a tall glass of orange juice.

Fruity, hazy, horrible. Was not a beer at all. The pour had plenty of head, which suprised me. I thought for sure there was an infection or something, the yellow head was too much. Strong alcohol taste. Just horrible. Sorry, maybe I can try it again locally someday. Thanks anyway to tavernjef for the bottle to try.

Appearance: Cloudy, brownish gold. Off white slightly retentive head.

Aroma: Sharp spice. Notes of ginger? Slight maltyness is present, but overpowered by the spiceyness.

Taste: Sweetly heavy mouthfeel. Alcohol makes itself known on the tongue. The sweet malt/wheat lingers throughout the aftertaste.

Notes: Nice spicy beer. The ginger and sweetness remind me of cookies and holidays.

Turbid light copper hue. Thin, but persistent ivory white head leaves sparse lace. Pronounced clove phenol melds with upfront bready sweetness to lend a dominant sweet herb impression in aroma. Yeast must and tropical, fruity esters couple to lend a secondary, but perceptibly overripe banana note. Enticing, but not quite balanced aromawise. Brusque snap of grainy wheat tartness incipient in flavor is ensued by a permeating melange of light toffee and sugary, clove studded banana pudding. Bready base malt notes eek in mid palate along with paltry, token hop bitterness, and manage to partially offset the chunky sweetness. Yeast must persists as a constant undertone. Firmly viscous and proteinaceous in mouthfeel, with a detracting, beefy, syrupy quality that precludes perfection. Finishes with a surge of tartness and browned butter that fades promptly. A strange, enjoyable brew. The residual sweetness weighs heavily on the palate and is a bit cumbersome, though. It reminescent of a 50 / 50 mix of their Blonde Doppelbock and Tucher Hefeweizen. Doesn't quite work. A hellesweizendoppelbock? Some chocolate notes would've been nice.

12 oz, brown bottle, twist off cap, no date.

This doppelbock poured a hazy, orangish-amber color with some white foam (with coaxing) that dissipated rapidly. The smell was sweet and malty and fruity with some wheat, yeast, and alcohol present. The taste was sweet and malty with a touch of caramel or toffee but also tangy and fruity with a bit of hops only in the finish. There were also phenolic and soapy flavors, as well as alcohol. The mouthfeel was smooth with an almost viscous feeling, but the body was medium and the carbonation very low. It was slightly warming. This was a decent beer that grew on me as I drank it (definitely more flavorful as it warmed up).

Presentation: A 12 fl.oz. long neck brown bottle. No useful information like a freshness date or strength listed, but there is a “health warning” that is utter bollocks & cash refund information that I notice as I toss the empty bottle into the Ocean from my Beach Front Apartment – go figure what’s of more use to me. A twist off cap helps to ruin the lifelines on my pale palms, that’ll fool the Fortune Teller; maybe I’ll have 6 Children now instead of 2!

Appearance: Poured with a rather gelatinous appearance & low carbonation, a small ¼” off-white head formed like a delayed fizz from a dissolving tablet in water. The head quickly fades to a broken covering with no lacing whatsoever. A turbid cloudy orange body has a Weizen look about it, but sadly, the beer looks flat & tired.

Nose: Wh-Y-easty smells are strong & definitely advertise the first half of the beers titled style, but I am not so sure about the latter. A slightly acetic hint hides at the back end of the aromas.

Taste: A very “spiky” beer, by that I mean that the flavors come in spikes rather than a transient series of smooth curves. Wheat, Malts & Yeast introduce a citrus flavored acetic acid towards the end. A slightly cloying Banana-sweetness festers around the latter quarter & threatens to remove the acidic aspects, but like the end of infinity, never quite gets there.

Mouthfeel: Solid feel to this beer, even with the lack of carbonation. It fails the smoothness test though, its spiky, sharp flavor change profile make this a hard beer to settle down with.

Drinkability: The lack of synergy between the component flavors makes this tough to drink in quantity. As for its Drinkability in relation to the sample size I have, it is quite good. Maybe 3.5 is fair.

Overall: A really good Weizen, which has all of the necessary characteristics required for such a beer. But I just wish that they were more smoothly linked together, rather than just a random collection. Disjointed at times, it lacks a synergy for me, I have not had too many Weizen Doppelbocks, but I just feel that this beer could be better. Strange – what exactly makes this a Weizen Doppelbock as opposed to a Weizen I wonder? – I am not sure whether it is my untrained palate, or my naïve lack of experience in Doppelbock matters, which results in this failure of distinction. Tastes like other Teutonic Weizens to me.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle, courtesy of Tavernjef, the Weizen Dopplebock pours out a solid hazy orange. Traces only of white foam cling to the edge of my glass. Aroma is heartily yeasty, with a stength of sweet malty wheatness, a bit of banana and citrus. This is a thicker beer than you think, it's a nice hearty dopplebock, with excellent mellowed out wheat flavor and just a little bit of orangey sourness to counter. Not a beer I'd want to drink a lot of in a sitting, but a good beer to relax and enjoy the character a little slower perhaps. This is my first sampling of beer from Capital City, and I am suitably impressed.

Hazy, cloudy dark gold with a peachy tone in color, thin white head of tight foam, faded fast, leaves some stringy lace. Smell is faintly sweet, a bit of wheat, lemon, orange, and peach with a light touch of spice. Taste is great of lemon and orange and incredibly thick and chewy, excellent sweet tartness and citrusy sourness, solid sweet wheat, but all mellowed down and easy to handle. Feel is pretty full and has a very nice creamy smoothness with a slight tart hold in the middle and then has this strange little sourness left on the lips like I had just bit into a orange with the peel still on. This is awesome stuff, I think I'll have another.

Appearance: a cloudy, peachy golden hue, with a fine, solid white head. Aroma: spare, initially, but eventually giving up hints of spice, and a good helping of fruit (orange, peach).
Good play on the palate, nice and chewy, though this wears away.
Very smooth, very mellow. Flavor is complex, in that contains things I cannot entirely comrehend, yet one-dimensional, in that it offer up little else throughout the drink. A sweet, candyish citric taste is predominant. A little plastic-feeling.
Not a bad drink, quite enjoyable, and unigue. But compares poorly against the hallmark of the style, Aventinus. What doesn't?

Pours a headless, glumpy, yeast-laden orange. Outrageous nose of banana pound cake covered in freshly cracked blacked pepper. Immediate sweetness is quelled by a dose of hops for a truly balanced, tasty and satisfying Weizenbock that warms a body quite nicely. Could stand a bit more carbonation, but a pleasure to drink nonetheless.

Cheers to cokes for this excellent brew!

Another dandy from Capital...cloudy orange color....nose is typical weizen...I get heavy cloves and banana's....low carbonation....a bit syrupy...slick...sweet flavor...bananna's...also I get some cinaman...some might find this a little oversweet, but I like it...not in aventius's class but worth seeking out...

Update-2003 version...more of a sweet/sour flavor...very yeasty....interesting but considerably different in flavor than Aventinus..one six-packk is enough of this for one year...

This beer is about as close to orange as you can get. A minimal head recedes to nothing in seconds. Really nice blend of banana, clove and sweet malt on the nose. First off, I notice the huge sweetness, teetering on cloying, and nice malt presence on the tongue. Then I start to pick up some weizen characteristics, cloves and pepper spicing, and some slight vanilla and banana tones. Mouthfeel is on the low side of the carbonation spectrum and a bit syrupy. Not out of the norm for this style however. Overall, this is a very tasty and enjoyable brew. Wouldn't want to can a sixer of this however. Not quite up to the high bar that Aventinus sets, but the next closest one that I've had.

Throws a dusty brown-peach glass with a thinnish tan head, with fair retention.
Bombards the nose with banana bread notes. Clove spiciness lurks as well.
Flavor starts with some sour apple notes. Switches to a banana sweetness. Spices rush in next. Vanilla, clove and maybe ginger. Malts then assert themselves with sweet,lush carmel hues. Finishes yeasty sour and somewhat alcoholic.
Fairly thick bodied. A summertime sipper. And a very unique and tasty one at that.

Hazy, orangey color, spidery head settles into patches of light foam. Sweet syrup aroma. Full bodied impression. Pepppery taste at first with denser fruit malts that combine with the spice. Continues in body until swallow, almost like a sweet gravy. More strident lemon notes than Aventinus. Fits Dopplebock category in its coating properties, slight alcohol warmth, and strong malt properties. Not complex, what you taste initially is what persists. A little too cloying for me to give a high drinkability score. Interesting brew.
