Reviewed from notes. Bread with faint banana on the nose. Pours hazy copper tinted amber under a 2” dense off-white foam cap that produces good lace. A bready palate with some banana and a suspicion of clove, a light malty sweetness and a hint of caramel. Medium full body and medium low carbonation.

Reviewed from session notes.

Pours out an amber color with two fingers of densely-packed foamy head that sticks around for over three minutes but only leaves behind minimal lacing on the glass. Smells like a caramel-coated banana with a side order of assorted fruity esters with just a garnish of clove and spice. Tastes of sweet wheat malt, heavy banana and caramel, but has even less of the spicing than the nose did. Unfortunately, this means that the brew dances back and forth on the cusp of being too sweet for my personal tastes. The finish dries out a little bit with some limited boozey hotness levels, but still remains somewhat sickly sweet overall. Texturally, somewhat thick and sluggishly carbonated.

A pretty average Weizenbock, I've had better and I've had worse than this. What would have made it spectacular would have been a more varied spectrum of hopping to counter all the cloying sweetness and a more assertive sparkling carbonation to help lift the body and break up that same sweetness.

Another one of Capital's many bock variants.

Pours a very hazy orange color, with one finger of off-white head. Decent retention and lacing.

Smell is nice. Quite fruity, with a blast of peaches, that gives way to some pleasant spice and yeasty esters. Lots of good stuff going on in here. It's high, light, and airy, and I like it.

Taste has many of the same characteristics, but in very different balance. Here it's really heavy on the peaches, so much so that I can't taste much else. Lots of dry wheat as well. The spice and lightness that are so good in the nose aren't there, or if they are they're buried under a bushel of ripe peaches.

Mouthfeel is okay, medium-bodied, definitely on the flat side.

Okay, and smells great, but what's with all the peaches. It's seriously fruity, in a way that I find surprising for this style.

Bottle from Friar Tuck's in Savoy, IL
No freshness date on bottle, picked up late summer 2011
Poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass

Capital's Weizen Doppelbock, currently pat of their Square Series, is a solid version of the style, focusing on balance between light and dark malts along with expected, intensified banana and apple pie spice aromas and flavors. This should be a go-to beer for fans of the style, with its generally well-hidden alcohol and pleasant flavors/aromas.

From the bottle, pours a voluminous head (>3cm) of tiny, soft-looking bubbles, off-white in color. Gradually reduces to a thin cap atop the beer, probably about 0.5cm. Leaves very modest amounts of lacing. Body is a dark copper color, components of brown, orange, and yellow. In light, this is a hazy, dull orange color with yellowish highlights. Sluggish carbonation is visible. Overall, the beer gives the impression that it is a "big" wheat beer: ethanol cuts the head, the carbonation is slower in a thicker body, the color is deep and rich.

Aroma is quite good, full of hearty banana esters, wheat malt and bread crust, a bit of caramel, diacetyl (butterscotch), and very mild nuttiness. Probably one of my favorite aromas in a weizenbock.

Taste opens with bread crust flavors along with some toasted malt components. Sweet and syrupy caramel flavors quickly materialize, as do rich banana esters and pie spices. Continues sliding across the palate giving off bready, syrupy caramel, and banana flavors with a bit of pie spice bite. Slight ethanol flavor in the back of the throat/tongue, only noticeable as beer warms. Aftertaste is of banana esters and some caramelized malts, but also with a bit of cloying sweetness.

Beer is medium to medium-heavy bodied with somewhat low carbonation. Resultant mouthfeel is fairly thick, chewy. Ethanol can be felt in the back of the throat/tongue, ever so slightly.

Spot on weizen, very fruity aromas and initial taste. The second glass was heavier to drink, this is a tickers' beer who likes it initially. Still very good, but the fruitiness dissipitates to just very good maltiness. Worth seeking out for fans of the style.Aove average mouthfeel.

Bottle. 2010 vintage. Poured into a DFH tulip glass a slightly hazy copper orange color with a 2 finger head of bone white. Nice lace left as the head settles. Banana, caramel, spice, wheat, and slight alochol round out the nose. Medium mouthfeel. Sweet dark fruit start with a caramel raisin taste along with banana and clove. Some orange as peach notes as well. Ever so slight bitterness in the end. Alcohol warms the throat as an afterthought. Pretty decent and easy drinking.

A: cloudy deep amber/orange hue body, 1 finger head, great lacing

S: big date/fig/fruit scent, malt

T: sweet fruit front, big firm malt

M: medium body, smooth, fair carbonation, semi-dry finish

D: WOW! Capital should change their name to the capitol of American bocks. They really know how to sock it to your taste buds. A sipper to be sure, alcohol well-hidden. Delicious velvet beer.

Poured a hazy orange-copper color with just a little bit of head on it. Nice aroma - sweet, citrus notes. Taste is very good. Heavy citrus with a bit of an aftertaste. Very light mouthfeel considering this is 8%. No alcohol taste at all. This beer is very drinkable despite the above average ABV. I'll definitely be looking for this again.

This beer looks like syrup when youre pouring it out. Its a very dark caramel color, small white head doesnt really last long. Scent is great, think caramel malts, some wheat notes, almost a whiff of booze. The taste has me hooowling at the moon. Nice thick dose of malt infused with wheat undertones. A bit of spice from the well blended alcohol. Mouth is fairly acidic, thin to medium. I like it.
