Capital's Island Wheat is a version of the APWA that has more flavor than most other APWAs I've had, but that's not saying much. Bringing some evident yeast and wheat malt characters to the forefront, this is certainly drinkable, but not particularly complex or satisfying to me due to that. While it may be easily drinkable, I still have yet to find a reason to come back to this style.

Pours a 2cm head of clean, white foam, with small, dense bubbles. Retention is about average, gradually subsiding to a thin film atop the body of the glass. Head leaves modest spots of lacing as it descends and after each sip. Body is a cloudy-opaque yellow-orange color, with light bringing out pale yellow tones. Carbonation is not visible through the body.

Aroma is strongly of yeast, with some mushroom, soil, and light fruit esters as well. Interesting, if not the most pleasing.

Taste has wheat and mild grain in the front of the palate, transitioning to some mild lemon citrus tartness along with wheat and yeast in the mid-palate. Back of palate picks up wheat malt sweetness and yeast. Aftertaste of very mild lemon tartness and some residual sweetness.

Body is light, with fairly high carbonation, creating a crisp, sparkling mouthfeel with some slight prickliness across the palate. Closes out with a semi-dry finish, leaving some lingering sweetness and stickiness on the palate.

A: Poured a half finger white colored head that settled very quickly to a thin rim around the glass. Not much can been seen in terms of carbonation. Some lacing. Color is a clear autumn hay.

S: Light sweetness from citrus, essences of earthy grass. Yeast and wheat are the dominate scents.

T: What I would expect from a pale wheat ale. Great balance between the malt, crisp grain, delicate hints of citrus, lemon grass, and hops.

M: Great. Just the right amount of carbonation and stickiness.

O: Overall a little above average. I appreciate the gift all the way from WI. Thanks T!

I am sure I have had this beer before since it is local but I have never sat down to actually review it. Unfortunately for the low abv, this beer was way too much work to drink. What I mean by that is I don't even mind that it is pretty low in alcohol content but it wasn't really that easy drinking of a beer. The mouthfeel was slightly harsh and it felt like there was a bunch of stuff forced into the taste of this beer. Speaking of the taste there was definitely wheat present along with some fruit and light hops. Not a great drinking experience.

A pleasant surprise Christmas gift mixer pack.

A - Pours a slightly hazy pale straw colour, finger of head with little retention and no real lacing.

S - Scent is dominated by bready wheat, hints of citrus rind and grassy hop notes, buttered bread and a hint of lemongrass.

T - Much like the nose with the bready wheat flavour dominating, bitter citrus rind, a touch of orange, pear and apple juice, sweet corn and the buttered bread notes linger alongside a grassy notes and green tea.

M - Medium bodied, a tad prickly going down and finishes surprisingly dry.

O - A tasty wheat ale that offers up a traditional flavour profile for the style. Nothing over the top, but easily sessioned and a perfect summer patio ale.

Island Wheat pours a clear bright straw color, with a good size head. There is a slightly skunk aroma with some hints grainy wheat. The taste is crisp, clean, good full wheat flavors, with hints of a carmalized malts. Not watery, full flavor, a little too carbonated. Overall this is a solid wheat ale, clean and crisp, but on the lighter side.
