On tap at Pike brewery. Pours dark brown hue with a tanned, thick head and much lacing. Aroma is of espresso, roasted, malt and some dark fruit. Medium, smooth body. Coffee, dark fruit, toasted malt and earthy hops fill the mouth. Quite complex, well done stout.

This is a very good, flavourful yet restrained and fairly balanced stout.
Black with a dark tan thin head soon shrinking to a foamy ring, it has some good lace.
Aroma is roasty with light chocolate, plus some hints of wood and prune.
Taste is roasty-earthy and woody with some spicey bitterness and with sweetness and bitterness present but pretty well balanced.

Bellied up to a full pint of XXX at the Pike Pub & Brewery last week in Seattle. Always enjoyed their sample trays in the past & was looking forward to a nice stout after a week in Vancouver (which had almost none that I could find!).
The glass is dark. The smell is a pleasant shock of charred malts.
Pike Street XXX Stout goes the extra mile in high heels on the roasted, forest-fire malts. Roast & char gang up to obliterate any potential subtleties lurking in the glass of black. Perhaps there are bits & pieces of chocolate, & certainly a coffee edge to the roast, but this is purebred charcoal.
Lucky for me I like charcoal. Swigging this is fairly easy, but I'm certain the seriousness of the flame-broil would catch up to the drinkability eventually.
Nice, solid stout to put your hands around. Even by the pint, this one wasn't hard to put down, & a very nice end to a good Seattle evening.

I had this on tap at the Pike Brewpub on 3/23/2010.
A= This stout poured a deep black/brown with a 1" creamy and thick tan head. The head settled slowly to a chunky cap and left some stickage on my glass.
S= Very roasty, with hints of coffee and a few whiffs os caramel sweetness in there too.
T= About what it should be. Big roasted grain notes wrapping around lighter flavors of chocolate, coffee, and a kiss of earthy hops. Finished lightly bitter and refreshing.
MF= Lighter side of medium bodied with a medium carbonation level.
D= Very drinkable. I could and would put down a few of these in a sitting if I had the chance.

My pint looked pretty delicious, very dark with a creamy tan head and a few larger bubbles dotting the top of the beer. Great head retention, plenty of lace. Nice aroma, sweet and roasty with a bit of leafy hops, toffee and chocolate. Moderate citrus bitterness up front balanced well with the sweetness. More caramel, chocolate and roast mid-palate. Lingering hop bitterness, a bit stronger than I expected. Full bodied with no alcohol presence, lowish carbonation, smooth and creamy. Great stuff and it went quite well with BBQ.

On tap at the brewpub.
Pours a deep and opaque black, no light gets through, oily looking, thin big bubbled brown head forms, few spots stick to the glass as it settles to a thin layer. Smell is intense, lots of chocolate and caramel, licorice, brown sugar, lightly roasty, quite sweet, biscuits, dark fruit, figs, lots of depth. Taste is similar, big licorice character, chocolate, light roast, caramel and brown sugar sweetness, fruit middle, sweet in the finish, maybe a touch of vanilla. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, slick, with low to medium carbonation. Definitely a good stout, I dig this stuff.

Pours a deep red/black with a thick and firm off white/tan head. Nose of dark chocolate and fresh brewed black coffee. Mouth feel is medium to full with a nice rich character. Flavors are all dark chocolate and black coffee...all the way. Nice dark chocolate and espresso bean finish.
This is a nice chocolate/coffee effort.

Both bottle and tap are good, tap is of course preferred (growler++).
Pours a lovely black with nut-brown head of decent density.
Lovely malt aroma with a good balance of floral hoppiness.
Overall flavor is well balanced, good strong northwest stout with coffee & chocolate malt balanced by just the right amount of hops.
Very smooth and easy to drink (a little too easy!), excellent flavor, excellent beer.

A: This arrived at the table with a decent amount of head that left a good bit of lacing around the edge of the glass. Color-wise, it's a velvety deep brown to black.
S: Chocolate upfront with a bit of coffee and malt in the background. A very chacteristic stout-type smell.
T: Everything I hoped it would be: dark malt, dark chocolate, a little coffee, even a little molasses thrown in there as well. A well rounded flavor that did not disappoint.
M: This is a thick, chewy sort of beer, the kind of feel that a good stout should have. Moderate carbonation, slightly syrupy, but very nice overall.
D: This is a very drinkable beer, although with the "weight" of it, I could maybe only handle! three at a time. Definitely recommended if your in the area!

Poured from growler into bubble pint glass. Poured with thick, rich, firm deep tan head. Solid head left thick, attractive lacing. Solid black color. Pleasantly rich aromas. Flavor follows aroma closely, with the roasty, toasty, goodness being everything you would hope for. The body and mouthfeel are what is expected from a great stout. The reason I didn't rate this beer higher is that it is so good, I feel it rates well against Imperial Stouts. I know it's inaccurate to do this, but this stout has earned the comparisons. Drink this beer.

In olden times most people, including brewery workers, were illiterate. To distinguish one beer style from another, brewers marked the kegs with X's. One X represented one style of beer, two Xs another and so on. That's how they told one beer from another.
And you thought all those Xs had something to do with Seattle's other First Avenue landmarks.
Pike's XXX Stout quickly launches into a rich tapestry of roasted aromas converging on cacao, coffee, and barley grain. It imparts a sweet malty flavor with ample roasted grain on a coal black body. This is a worthy stout of pronounced roastiness though I can't help but wonder if a nitro pour might deliver the final touch of grace in smoothing out the body.

on tap at the brewpub during a recent long weekend in wonderful seattle.
appearance: served in a pint glass, rich dark body, not much in the way of highlights...a creamy tan head sits on top and quickly recedes to a small layer of lace
smell: dark roasted chocolate, moderate bitterness, seattle espresso, roasty and burnt
taste: semi-sweet dark chocolate, moderately bitter roasted malts, a touch of smoke and some bitter hops. Nice to see the export stout on display and a good standard at Pike
mouthfeel: chewy, bitter finish
drinkability: pretty good

On tap at the brewery in a pint glass.
Appearance: thick and daunting, black with a tan head
Smell: creamy and chocolaty, sweet
Taste: sweet, tangy, dry with a small hop bite, no coffee flavor
Taste like Guiness to me. I'm ok with this one but they make a better bier.

On-tap at the Pike Pub & Brewery, Seattle, WA. (listed as 7% ABV)
The pint glass cane filled with an opaque, seal brown brew that turned amber at the edges when held up to the light. A thin wisp of burnt tan foam receded to a ring of bubbles, leaving behind thick webs of attractive lacing. Initially, I figured this to be a milk/sweet stout based on the aroma, with its rich notes of espresso and vanilla creme. But then, an onslaught of roasted malts, bold coffee roast, and a pinch of baker's chocolate let me know that this was not going to be "sweet". All was nicely balanced by a peat-like earthiness from the hops.
Hellooo roast! HUGE notes of dark chocolate malts with charred coffee beans and smoked earth abound in the flavor. Absolutely delicious, although as a Foreign/Export stout it might be a bit overbearing to recieve a perfect "5.0". Mouthfeel is spritzy and well-carbonated with a medium-thick body. A massively bitter, roasted baker's chocolate finish lingers for days. Pike Brewing hit it out of the park with this one. I hope my bomber survives the plane flight back to Raleigh. *crosses fingers*
[EDIT: the bottle held up well, consumed on 10/21/08. Excellent flavor & appearance, although the aroma is slightly diminished from the bottle. Mouthfeel not as bitter and strong, drinkability is the same.]

On draft at the Pike Pub in Pike Place Market, Seattle. Poured blacker than black with a generous mocha head. Aroma of coffee and bitter chocolate. Crikey...this is a delicious stout, with a full-bodied roasted malt and chocolate flavor. Smooth, and full bodied with a warming alcohol finish. So good I had it twice!
I've had it again a couple times since, this time in bottled format. This beer really serves as a template for the style.

This was my first experience with Pike. Many love this brew and probably one of their better brews. Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium brown foamy head with low retention but good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt is pretty dominant with some light coffee notes also noticeable. Taste is quite dry with limited chocolate and coffee note and a medium bitter finish.

A: Dark, but clearly reddish.
S: Smoky and malty. Hints of coffee.
T: Very roasty/smoky, but evens out as the beer warms up. More bitter than I'd expect from a stout (65 IBU!), but this is balanced by a rising sweetness.
M: OK mouthfeel, nothing to write home about.
D: Moderately drinkable. Like the Kilt Lifter, the smokiness is a little much to make it a session beer.

Drank at the Brewpub, the beer was served in a standard pint. The beer is a jet black with a smallish tan head and good flecks of lace.
The nose is of heavily roasted almost burnt malts and dark fruit. Some sweet molasses smell hovers in the background.
The taste is of charred sweet fruit, coffee and bakers chocolate. I had this one for desert and it satisfied my sweet tooth. Becomes more bitter late as the hops kick in.
The mouth is not as creamy as I like, but this has a nice dry finish. This was a great way to cap off my visit to Pike. Minor complaint, I think they serve this beauty to cold. I waited several minutes to let it warm a bit.

Had this on tap over at Pike's Pub in Seattle where it was served cold (too cold for my taste) with a minimal tan head that dissapeared quickly. It was hard to detect any aromas coming off this beer, as initially served, but as it warmed up you could smell the roasted malt, and a sweetness that reminded me of either caramel or toffee. The color is a very dark brown that almost looks black in the pub lighting. The medium body and moderately low carbonation give this beer a smooth mouthfeel. The taste is nicely balanced between roasty malts and assertive hop bitterness with a pleasantly bitter finish. This is a very drinkable Export Stout.

A: Pours pitch black, looks very very thick. Tan head, slight lacing
S: Smell is pretty complex. Coffee, chocolate roasted malt scents
T: Dark chocolate and coffee. Much too bitter
M: Full bodied, good amount of carbonation, smooth.
D: Complex smelling beer, however I could not stand the taste. I could barely choke it down, much too bitter, the taste reminded me of an asprin or some type of medicine disolving in your mouth, it was that bitter. I was pretty surprised with the reviews on this one, perhaps I got a bad pint of this one or a dirty glass or something. Would like to try this one again, from a bottle next time.

Imagine that...me following bjohnson around.
Another gem on tap at Redbones...you better get there soon.
Arrived jet black with no speck of light passing thru this bad boy...a half a finger of cocoa-colored head. Would have been more if I was pouring, but they like to pour 'em this way...I ain't complaining and I won't dock it any in appearance. This beer was gorgeous and the lacing was so incredibly tight, unlike most...most of the foam sticks around for the duration of the pint.
Milk chocolate in the nose...a touch of sweet malt pierces the nostrils calling me in for closer inspection.
The taste is as good as it gets...perfectly balanced, not overly sweet and even a bit green, drying out the finish. Very nice chocolate profile, a roasty element is there with no burnt or off flavors. Alcohol peaks thru as it hits room temperature, but ever so slightly.
Mouthfeel is full bodied and the carbonation is perfect...I could easily drink this one all evening and appreciate every sip.
One of my favorite stouts to date.

A: Pours a jet black with a one finger cream colored head. Nice lacing, but not as much as I hoped after seeing the thick milk shakey head.
S: Roasted barley notes with a slight infusion of chocolate and sweet caramel.
T/M: Roasted barley and malt with unsweetned chocolate flavors cross the palate first. Theres a slight sweetness to the first flavors. Burnt coffee notes also find their way in leading to a dry finish. Not a huge body, but big enough. Low carbonation.
D: Pretty tasty stout from Pike. Definately worth the chance if you can find it on draft. Luckily I had the chance to try this offering.

Brown-tan head with great lace. Opaque balck--nothing else for color. The nose had a single, clear roast, malt, no hop but some peat. Very sweet, roast, and a light smoke underneath with some raisins and dark fruit in there. The mouthfeel was a bit chunky, particles, clearly not filtered. Taste better than the smell, but overall a good beer in a touristy pub.

This is a real treat on tap in a chalice on a cold evening. Big , black and coffee nosed, the beer stretches its burnt malt legs after a few sips and takes you home to bed. I love a big stout that is not too high in alcohol as you get all the mouthfeel without the headache.

A nice tasty stout from Pike. Jet black with a brown head. The smell is roasted malts, chocolate and coffee with a slighty sour hint. Rich malty, coffee taste with a good dose of chocolate. Very rich. Espresso and dark chocolate are brought to mind. Smooth mouthfeel, but a little rough on the edge with a slightly too-bitter aftertaste.
Not had this in the bottle, but I'm sure it can't beat this on-tap.
