Poured a dark amber chocolate brown with a half inch creamy head into a standard pint glass.

Aroma is sweet with coffee and hop notes.

Taste immediately gives the impression of strong hops in this stout. Sweet coffee favors that mesh well with the hoppiness.

Very smooth and not at all watery. Almost just right.

Solid stout overall that I would revisit again and again

Pike XXX Stout has a thin-to-medium tan head and a very dark brown, almost black appearance, but with visible bubble streams, upon close inspection. Lacing is scant. The aroma is of heavily-roasted barley malt, dark brown bread crust, and sweetness. Flavor is of deep, dark, astringent, roasted barley malt, a good amount of bitterness, sweetness, and some chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Pike XXX Stout finishes mostly wet, heavy, sweet, and rich. This is a sipper. Overall, I highly recommend this one!

Pike Pub & Brewery - Pike Street XXX Stout

Acquired via trade, somehow one of my first Washington brews, will need to fix that ASAP since they have the best hops in the country!

Look - Pours an oily (not jet) black with a huge foamy mocha head. Lots of sticky lacing, good retention.

Smell - Roasted malt, coffee, piney hops, cola, dark chocolate, molasses, and some fruit (berries, dates, figs).

Taste - On the thinner side, the fruits hit first, hops are there as well, then chocolate and finally roasted coffee.

Mouthfeel - Pine hops surprisingly bitter feel (it is 65 IBU so I guess not that surprising) sits on the palate and the roasted malts and coffee on the middle. Rich medium/heavy body with a dry finish. Great drinkability.

Overall - Solid brew all the way around, the hops add character and uniqueness that made me have to respect it (that and I enjoyed it). Recommend for sure.

Bottle from Total Wine in Tampa. From notes.

A - Poured black with a three finger, thick brown milky-coffee head. Good lace rings, one finger of retention.

S - Coffee, cola, roast.

T - Roasty, dark fruit, lot's of dark sweet malt, quite roasty.

M - Good bitterness, good carbonation, medium creamy body.

O/D - A nice stout. Doesn't do too much to hold onto you, but it seems like a decent example of the style. I have to admit I got a little bored with it after the first glass.

Got a 22 ounce bottle on sale. pours a deep black with a small amount of slightly creamy head that disappears quickly. I pick up the roasted malts on the first smell, second i come up with a little bit of coffee and very small amount of black licorice, not too strong of smell but i am definitely interested. first taste goes down nice and smooth, with a very drinkable flavor, easy to pick out individual malts. roasted and darker caramel malts. the finishing aftertaste blends all the flavors and ends with that sweetness and then hint of coffee. Very solid brew, easy drinking with tons of dark malt flavors.

Black as night with a good tannish-brown head and good lacing.

Aroma is roasty and a little burnt with nice coffee and chocolate notes.

Flavor follows through with the nose, maybe with a touche of anise (but it’s subtle). The chocolate and coffee are a bit more pronounced, leaving a slightly cappuccino effect for the imbiber.

Body is full, thick, rich, and leaves a wonderful slightly roasted, slightly burnt aftertaste that I really enjoy in a stout.

Definitely recommended. I’ll for sure buy this one again.

Poured into a glass mug. The beer pours dark brown and falls into the glass as a jet black liquid with a thick, creamy tan head that dissipates slowly. Some webbed lacing trails behind the retreating head. There are aromas of dark roasted malts, black coffee, chocolate, and a little prune. The beer is very roasty in flavor from the dark malts. I get that coffee and prune from the nose, but also a little licorice. I only get a touch of chocolate there, but it isn't much. The body is full and creamy. The roasty aftertaste lingers in the mouth and the finish is slightly dry. The beer drinks fairly easily due to the fact that it is smooth. This is an excellent beer. If you like your stouts very roasty, this one is for you.
