Pours a very slightly hazy very slightly reddish golden color with a very large off white head with a floral nose. The beer has a slight herbal front with a peppery middle and a clean cedary finish with hints of grapefruit and thinnish mouthfeel. This is a decent drinkable beer that tastes of a higher alcohol percentage than I would guess it actually is. (% unknown)

this was just being called nellie without the naughty when i was in, but i assume its the same beer, just shorthand for it or something, if i am wrong and they are two distinct brews, someone let me know. this is an organic golden ale and thats cool, but it doesnt taste very flavorful to me, and overall it seems a little sloppy, which i also thought about the other beer i had in here when i visited. its a little darker in color than a lot of these are, doesnt hold much of a head, and has a light metallic taste running through it that is especially pronounced on the finish, oddly tannic too, like it was sparged too warm or something, it just doesnt seem like a good showcase of organic ingredients or a very dialed in beer overall. there is some light honey sweetness in the middle of it from the grain that makes it a little less drinkable and refreshing than the style should be, and its not dry enough in the finish either. some minerals in here, bitter old school hops that seem a little out of place in this style, and just not a well refined beer overall. it also kind of tastes like its being poured through a dirty line, which simply should not be the case at the brewery! not sure the deal here, but ill be in no hurry to drink another nellie...

Comes in a yellow and gold color, 1/2" white head with almost nothing going on in the aroma category.

Taste also was mild, this is their crossover beer I guess. Mild all the way. No off flavors. Nothing complex, yeast, hops and malt all held in check. Mild biscuits and floral effects. Nothing offensive to be found. Pedestrian.

The Pike Brewing Co. "Naughty Nellie"
22 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, seemingly coded "029" but without freshness dating
$4.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Pike has always been a solid brewery in my opinion, delivering consistent quality at reasonable prices, and Naughty Nellie is no exception. Beyond that it's organic; and I believe, bottle-conditioned, or at least partially unfiltered.

There are three main components to any beer (malt, hops, and yeast), and this one displays each of them clearly, and brightly. It's fresh and alive, and although it might be from Seattle, WA it reminds me a lot of some of the newer real ales I've tasted in England.

Let's start with the malt: grainy, biscuity, and even subtly toasty it's the base of the beer that holds everything together. It's a little bit richer than your standard golden ale malt, and that gives it depth without adding any extra body. The hops: simple, and at least for now, completely representative of the Pacific northwest in its floral, citrusy (grapefruit, orange, lemon), pungent, and lightly piney character. The yeast: adds an actual yeasty character, as well as fruity notes of apple, and perhaps pear. With everything combined you'll find crackers and peach & apricot as well.

Like many great beers these days it'll probably be looked at as passé or archaic, and overshadowed by the 'bigger' beers out there, but there's something to be said for simplicity, balance, and drinkability. It's one of my favorite beers from Pike, and certainly worth trying.

Pours a deep amber with thin head and lacing.
Smell is mild. A pleasant mix of sweet citrus.
Taste is a blend of caramel malt and citrus and some faint grassy notes.
Smooth and laid back.
