An astonishingly good beer, this nails the fresh-hop-drenched, resinous, sticky, piney, "hop juice" variety of American IPA.
It's a nice deep green-gold color, not particularly carbonated (so the head's not huge), and the first sniff tells you immediately what it is -- it smells like _hops_, fresh and resinous.
The taste follows through in wonderful form: it really tastes like fresh hops. There's a little sweetness, but it's quite overpowered by the hops. The hop bitterness is clear, but tasty, and not overbearing, and the other various hop flavors just jump at you and sing. The mouthfeel is thick, oily, and a little sticky, and together with the taste, this really gives the impression one is drinking pure hop extract or something.
Baird's always had a American vibe, and they've been flirting with the concept of an American IPA for a long time, releasing beer after beer that sort of tease in that direction, but never quite satisfy, adding too many other clashing flavors or otherwise falling short of the mark. "Hop Havoc" remedies that; it's a pure and clear answer to those who want their sticky hop fix, and indeed does a better job of it than many more famous American IPAs.
For those in Japan, it's also much more likely to be fresh (craft beers imported from America, even on tap, are all too often way past their prime), which of course is especially important for this particular taste.
