12 oz. bottle poured into a Baird straight pint glass.
A: Rising Sun pours a hazy amber color with a thin head of creamy white foam that does not dissipate. Lacing is good with thick swaths of residue clinging to the glass.
S: Strong backbone of malt and orange with faint hints of black pepper and honey flowing through the air.
T: The initial flavor that hits your tongue is that of lemon and orange peel, with a honey wheat malt flavor, yeast and some nuttiness finishing off your sip.
M: This is a nice full-bodied APA with medium carbonation. The mouth feel is slightly creamy and sweet with a nice dry finish.
O: This is a very refreshing APA that quences your thirst on a hot summer day. Not the best, but above average and well worth seeking out.

A: Dull orange-amber in color. More than a bit hazy. Forms a very stable and very fluffy 3/4" of white head. Good lacing.
S: Orange, bready malt and some musty yeast.
T: Lightly sweet grainy malts. Citrus: dull orange and light lemon. Toasty. Mild to moderate bitterness on the finish.
M: Medium body with carbonation slightly on the higher side. A little prickly in the mouth.
O: A surprisingly good and quite tasty pale ale offering a nice blend of malt, hops, and bitterness.

Bought a 12 oz bottle at Superior Market, a Russian supermarket in Sunnyside Queens, NY - a great place to buy beer while in NY.
Paid $5.39...looks like that is about average for this beer.
Pours a light orange/dark gold color with a big white head that fades down to 1/8 inch and has good retention at that size. Thick bands of lacing on the glass.
Smell is bitter citrus hops and what appears to be caramel malts. Taste is balance as well - citric bitterness balanced by slightly sweet bready malt. Both the bitterness and the maltiness are pronounced and flavorful.
Mouthfeel is rich and crisp. Overall a good beer. However $5.39 for a 12 oz APA is a bit over the top. I enjoyed it, wouldn't want another at that price.

Reviewed from notes of 4/10/11.
I received this bottle from my friend Toby in a 6 pack grab.
A = Amber yellow color. 2 finger bubbly, stiff head. Cloudy with minor sediment. Visible carbonation.
S = Hoppy. Clover and grass notes,
T = Hoppy with sweet roasted nut. Solid full flavor.
M = Full body. Hoppy on the front. Mild and sweet on the back. Dry finish. Refreshing.
O = I liked this. Baird Brewing always dependable with brewing somthing interesting and with a quality approach.

I figured with the recent tragedies in Japan trying a beer from there would be appropriate. Some small contribution to the Japanese export market.
A 12 ounce bottle poured into a St. Bernardus chalice. Initial impression is a clean hop smell resembling many an IPA, citrus and a bit of pine.
Color is a deep amber with turbidity and an off-white head that is both tall and full.
Smells include a hint of Orval-twang and the aforementioned hop notes along with a bit of grain sweetness.
Tastes are balanced and clean. I am pleased with the slight grain sweetness and the big hop finish. There is a bit of bitterness but nothing to fear. The tartnesses just right for a drinkable beer and the overall impression is very good and rather more complex than the standard 'American' pale. I am betting on a unique yeast strain as the source of the major complexity, though both the hops and the malt must also have been chosen with care.
Mouthfeel is medium with a good carbonation and a dry finish that lingers a bit with the tartness that add so much to the drinkability of this fine ale.
"Overall' this is a fine beer with a hefty price tag ($4.99 or thereabouts for the 12 oz bottle) though not quite on par with Mikkelller's offerings.
Slainte and Kampai.

Appearance: The beer has a cloudy orange color with two fingers of rocky head that produces major lacing.
Smell: This sample has a faint smell of hops and a hint of black pepper. In the background there is a smattering of malt.
Taste: Mostly tastes of malt with a slight taste of hops.
Mouthfeel: Medium body and creamy.
Overall: This is a thirst quenching beer with average flavors from the hops and malt. I don't pick up any flavors or smells from the hops. This would be a refreshing beer on a hot summer's day.

This is my first beer from this brewery so looking forwards to it,it pours a cloudy apricot hue with decent carbonation that leaves behind a very frothy two finger head and lacing here and there,on smell im getting apricot, tangello and some bitter grapefruit aromas,it has a pleasant mouthfeel which is between light and medium and well carbonated and on the first sip apricot stands out followed by mandarins, some light toffee and also a tiny touch of lemon zest bitterness right at the end but its not really bitter at all, overall its a nice drop thats tasty without being too complex and if it was cheaper could easily see this as a nice session beer.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass. ABV of 5.0%.
Appearance: Head rises up quickly and is way too large. White head and a hazy light amber.
Smell: Some perfumey tartness. It smells really good but according to other reviews it's not supposed to be this way. I'm guessing it has some sort of infection.
Taste: Caramel and puckering tartness. Good amount of yeast.
Mouthfeel: Kinda flat because the explosive head upon the initial pour kinda zapped the carbonation.
Definitely a little infection going on in this bottle. I'm posting this review nonetheless because it was no doubt the fault of the brewer and there should be bad bottles represented in reviews. All things considered it was still enjoyable.

360ml bottle poured into tulip sept17 2010
A hazy pale orange with enough clarity to see some bubbles and suspended particles. two finger head slowly falls to a 1/4in film that leaves some patches of lace
S some orange rind and caramel
T some spicy hops on top of what I smell, just a little pine decent but not amazing
M more carbonation then I could see creams it up more then enough to please
D I could session this with no issues except an empty bank account
worth trying and it's good knowing if I'm ever in Japan there's plenty too drink, luckily I can find many good brews from there right here in Alberta

360ml bottle, 5% ABV.
This beer pours a hazy dark apricot hue, with two fingers of thick foamy white head, which melts away slowly, leaving a decent, intricate pattern of lace around the glass. It smells fairly strongly of citrus and pine hops, with a reserved biscuit/toffee maltiness. The taste is bready caramel malt, orange citrus, and floral, bitter leafy hops. The carbonation is a bit on the low side, the body medium weight, smooth, and a tad creamy. It finishes clean, and dry, the floral citrus hops closing up shop.
A very enjoyably hopped-up APA, one that would give local fave Full Moon some competition, all other things being equal, of course...

A - Amber hued dark orange with a couple of centimetres of fluffy white head that slowly fall away. Plenty of lacing.
S - Piney and citrus fruit hops dominate the aroma. Some biscuit malt hints come through.
T - Taste is much more balanced between piney, fruity hops and biscuity malt.
M - Lighter side of medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Noticeable bitterness without being too full on.
D - A very nice APA. Would drink again if available at a good price.

Serving: 11.2 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.
A: Orange-copper, hazy, with a think head that has nice retention and clings to the sides of the glass, it also has nice lacing. When held to the light, becomes light orange on the sides, though, there is still a column of copper sits in the middle. Steady carbonation can be seen when held to the light.
S: Piny, floral, and citrus.
T: Citrus, pine, some bubble gum, floral. Interesting, the flavor comes through more at the end and finish rather than at the beginning.
M: Actually takes on a creamy note towards the back of the throat but it still finishes clean.
D: Low alcohol and subtle flavor makes this an easy drinking pale.
Overall: A nice change of pace from your over hopped American micro-brews. Do not get me wrong, I admire and enjoy the limits of beer that are constantly being pushed by American Micro-Breweries, however, it is refreshing to enjoy a beer that has a subtle, almost elegance, to it. The first sip is restrained, the flavor coming towards the end. Honestly, the more Japanese mirco-brews I try, the more they seem to contain this restraint, subtlety, and elegance, much like their food.

One of the most enjoyable beer experiences I've had in a long time. Maybe it's because a 12 oz bottle costs almost $5; and it had better be good. But the beer poured rich and gold to cloudy amber in the glass and a giant cream-colored head that nearly overflowed the glass and stayed for a very long time. As expected, some sediment that never settled out and provided an interesting flavor enhancement. Rich, biscuity smooth malt and a strong yet well-balanced spicy hops that provided a subtle bitterness to the aftertaste. Fantastic, bordering on (near) perfect. Well done, Baird. Youku dekimashita!

12 ounce bottle poured into a 12 ounce snifter.
This is interesting...an American Pale Ale brewed in Japan. This one carries a hefty price tag ($5 for 12 ounce bottle). Perhaps because of the place of origin? Perhaps this beer is astounding? Let's find out.
Pours as a Pale Ale should...nice lacing on the glass...a somewhat transparent copper color in the beer itself.
Smells of rich caramel, syrup, hops, sweet fruit (grapes, melon), and some bitterness in the nose, as well.
The flavor is very biscuity and bitter. Pretty dry on the tongue. There are some raisiny notes in there, along with an alcoholic bitter sting on the tip of the tongue. Some bubblegum flavors, and do I detect a rice element here?
Overall, this beer is good, but nothing to write home about. It would be a good, refreshingly bitter ale for a hot summer day. It's a standard example, a bit on the bitter side, and slightly heavy on the price.

Nice beer. I did drink this at about maybe 60 65 degrees F, so your mileage may vary. Poured with a great off white foamy frothy head and lots of lace. Color is almost barely, slightly hazy amber. Aroma is malty, hoppy, a bit of spice and citrus. Flavor is similar but with more malt, good bitter/sweet, a little fruity hard candy. Body is good and good carbonation. Nice finish like flavor.

A - Pours with a huge three finger head of fluffy, white foam that settles slowly and leaves nice lace. The body is slightly hazy and reddish orange.
S - Moderate hop aroma that is both musty and a bit citrus like. Some bready malt with a hint of caramel.
T - Grassy hop flavors up front with toasted bread malt. Some light toffee in the middle that lingers during the hoppy finish with moderate bitterness and notes of pine, licorice, and musty hops.
M - Medium body, high carbonation, and a slightly dry finish.
D - A drinkable, but somewhat strange, pale ale. The hop character is noticeable and seems to straddle the line between American and British pale ales with notes of pine as well as musty English hops. It is significantly overcarbonated, and while this seems to mask some of the character at first, the hops come out more as the beer warms up. A nice pale ale and worth a try if you can find it.

Baird Sising Sun Pale Ale
Appearance: Glass bottle into pint glass. Color is golden amber with yellow hihglights. More or less clear. Id guess 9 SRM
Smell: Light malt smell, slighty sour in there, but mostly I would describe it as alsmost a green apple kind of thing, sweet slightly sour
Taste: Highly level of carbonation, little bit...tangy! Very sligh malt taste but Its in there. Light malt finish of dry hops. As I drank through the pint the more subtle florals kind of disipated, and I was left with more of a blended malt/hop taste.
Mouthfeel: I was epxecting watering but it holds together suprisingly well, medium body
Drinkability: Relatively low ABV, enough taste to be interesting, light enough to want another. Good drinker.

Am I perpetuating some kind of stereotype if I describe a Japanese Pale ale as having a Saki-like edge? Perhaps. But here goes.
Pours a hazy amber with a gigantic blast of carbonation - almost overcarbonated. The head is sticky and clings nicely to the glass. The aroma is mild and slightly flowery, a little clover-like. The flavor is very polite and delicate - and this is where the Saki bit comes in. It's clearly a pale ale in the American tradition, but it has a restraint and dryness that I associated more with Saki. It's bone dry on the back of my mouth. The hops are slight and the malt has a slight sourness or bitterness, not unpleasant, but distinct and unusual for an American-brewed beer.
This is a good beer, and interesting to see how other brewing traditions intersect with the American one, but it is not a pale ale I will visit with often.

Pours hazy amber with a huge foamy head (almost too much at first). The head eventually descends leaving patches of foamy lace on the glass.
The smell is floral/pine with mild citrus and grainy/caramelish. Mildly spicy with a touch of yeast.
The taste is of herbal/floral notes mixing with a grainy/caramelish sweetness. Nicely balanced. There is a citric presence (slightly tart) as well. Nice balance shows through the finish.
It is on the lighter side of medium body. Normally I would ask for more of a body but this works well here. Also, flavors linger nicely.
Nicely balanced between hops and malt, and flavorful, this is truly a "sessionable" beer.

Appearance: Pours a clear, copper body with a large, foamy, whitish head.
Smell: Pale malts with a thin vein of graininess. A single, nearly missed drop of wildflower honey. Citrusy hops with just a distant pinch of earthy spice.
Taste: Pale malts with a touch of fresh, steeped grains. Meager, short-lived hint of sweet honey. Touch of apricot pulp. Citrusy hops mainly display a taste of pithy lemon rinds. Medium-plus bitterness. Small hints at delicately toasted grains. Dry, lightly bitter finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: A quality, well-crafted APA that, while good, didn't quite sing to me as well as my previous Baird beers have. In all honesty, the somewhat heftier cost of this import mars the chance of a re-visit.

Pours a golden amber hue with a stron three finger, spongey brain of a head. This reduces to a layer o' foam. Nice bubbling. Evergreen and orange hops with just some faint bready malts. The taste starts with hop bitterness of citrus and some pine resin notes. The malts act to balance out some of the hops flavor. Very balanced, but still pretty hoppy beer. Good drinkability.
