Purchased at Julios and poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pured a nice crystal clear light amber with a creamy almost two finger head that slumps down to leave a rather nice blanket.

S - Smell is rather average here. Lots of malty sweetness and no hops really. Think this just might be old.

T - More of the same. Rather sweet with just a faint amount of citrusy hops. Must have been really nice and fresh at some point sadly now it just isnt that.

M - Nice feel, not too thin with a nice clean finish.

O - Overall, this beer is just okay...now. Tastes like it must have been pretty nice at somepoint. A shame really.

Popped open a gusher here.

Pours a deep golden color with a think frothy 2 finger white head. Lot sof sediment at bottom of glass.

Sweet malt aroma & faint earthy hops.

Has a citrus & floral hop flavor, some spiciness, a slight tartness, enough sweet malt to balance things out.

Dry, chewy, a bit too much carbonation for my tastes, lingering dryness.

Refreshing beer for a hot sunny day.

Poured from the bottle a hazy amber gold color with a thick and creamy off-white head.

Aroma is one part earthy citrus and one part grainy malts.

The taste is quite malty with a mild bitter hops presence. Finish has a metallic tinge to it. Definitely a pale ale of the English style.

Lighter bodied, dry, and mildly carbonated.

A nice pale ale - nothing memorable.

This is pretty good, but not all that great. It's fairly tasty, but light, rather dry and fruity, and not really my style.

Somewhat hazy amber, it has a huge pale tan head, steadily shrinking and leaving a little weak lace.

The aroma is apples, mostly green apples with peels, honey, hay, lemon, pear.

The taste is apple, apricot, peach, hay, grass, light fresh grapefruit. it has a light zesty feel.

Baird Brewing Company continues to infultrate the U.S. with an attitidue about brewing that's right at home. Where the beer shares much in common with classic American pale ales, it relies heavily on British influence as well.

The rich pour of burnt orange and honeyish amber carries with it a dense haze that gives the beer a bright rust aesthetic value. Creamy carbonation patienty lifts to the surface with a thick sheet that spans the surface. Light pocket lacing and medium retention settles the foam character of the beer with a slight lazy or lumbering demeanor.

Rich aromas of malt and hops mingle in the nose. Malty rich with the nutty and caramelly scent that gives a biscotti note from English malts. Citrus, grass, and other earthy hop aromatics blend with the citrus character that share the stage with both American and English hop notes. But the beer's aroma doesn't stop there, it also introduces estery notes of apple, peach, dates, and figs that remind the olfactory senses of light fruitcake.

Flavors of malt also rise first in taste- sweet with rich caramel, toffee, biscuit, and a dash of brown sugar. But the mid palate balances with hop flavors of ripe red grapefruit, dried oranges, peach, apricot, mango, and earthy grasses and woods. The hop compounds develop into a semi-sharp, semi-broad bitterness that again speaks to American hop zest and Brittish hop broadness. Sweetness also accompanies a bready taste that seems almost stale and yeasty in aftertaste.

With low-lying cask ale-like carbonation, the bready-sweet weight of unresolved barley rests weightedly on the tongue and relies on the stripping agents of alcohol, hop resins, and light ferment acidity to close the beer malty-dry and mostly clean.

I personally think that more English pale ale attributes are present with this ale. Regardless, the beer is very pleasant and non offensive to any lover of pale ales in general.

Pleasant citrus hop aroma with a mild malt backbone.

Citrusy hops upfront, medium bitterness. Mild malt taste as it finishes clean and dry.

Nice pale ale, well balanced and easy to drink.

Pours out bright orange amber with a small bit of a haze to it, head is slightly tan and drops to a thick layer of fat bubbles.

Smell. Has a very nice balance of sweetness and creaminess; has a sweet caramel flavor to it, but aroma stays rich and creamy. There is a small citrus hoppiness in the aroma, but it stays predominantly sweet.

Taste. A bit more of the citrus comes out, and a lot of the caramel sweetness drops out. Flavor is not as rich as i thought it would be, tastes a touch watered down. The sweetness comes back in as it warms, but overall tastes on the mild bitterness side; lemon/lime citrus.

Mouthfeel. Body is on the thinner side, but not bad. Has a nice balance to it. The carbonation is at a good level, and also with the body and flavor, this beer is certainly on the refreshing side.

Overall, not a bad beer at all. I enjoy it, but I think i payed close to $4 for this bottle, which is definitely not worth it. I like the aroma the most, but the flavor is still pretty good as it brings a nice hoppiness that is not overly bitter and is refreshing. A good beer, but not one i will get again...too expensive and there are better ones out there more available.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass. ABV of 5.0%.

Appearance: Head rises up quickly and is way too large. White head and a hazy light amber.

Smell: Some perfumey tartness. It smells really good but according to other reviews it's not supposed to be this way. I'm guessing it has some sort of infection.

Taste: Caramel and puckering tartness. Good amount of yeast.

Mouthfeel: Kinda flat because the explosive head upon the initial pour kinda zapped the carbonation.

Definitely a little infection going on in this bottle. I'm posting this review nonetheless because it was no doubt the fault of the brewer and there should be bad bottles represented in reviews. All things considered it was still enjoyable.

Reviewed from notes of 4/10/11.

I received this bottle from my friend Toby in a 6 pack grab.

A = Amber yellow color. 2 finger bubbly, stiff head. Cloudy with minor sediment. Visible carbonation.

S = Hoppy. Clover and grass notes,

T = Hoppy with sweet roasted nut. Solid full flavor.

M = Full body. Hoppy on the front. Mild and sweet on the back. Dry finish. Refreshing.

O = I liked this. Baird Brewing always dependable with brewing somthing interesting and with a quality approach.

Pours a golden amber hue with a stron three finger, spongey brain of a head. This reduces to a layer o' foam. Nice bubbling. Evergreen and orange hops with just some faint bready malts. The taste starts with hop bitterness of citrus and some pine resin notes. The malts act to balance out some of the hops flavor. Very balanced, but still pretty hoppy beer. Good drinkability.

Mondial 2009. Golden colour with little head, they were careful in the pour. A solid American style ,pale, very drinkable with some orange , and grapefruit. Good balance, though leaning on the bitter side.Moderate aroma that reflects malt as well as hops.

Appearance - pours into a sampling glass with a good showing of foam, well over a finger in depth. Good cling to the glass as it falls back. The beer is a hazy tangerine color with a lot of particulate in suspension.

Aroma - very orangey, like the heavy fruitiness of a Dipa but without the intensity and depth.

Taste - crackery base malts, on the sweeter side, followed by an expected fruity hop character. Very orangey and with a light but not very pronounced hoppiness, a little like orange Pez. More of a hoppy bite on the swallow, ending almost medicinal. They really tried to get max flavor from whatever hops they used. Nice dryness on the finish, very clean.

Mouthfeel - good crispness, average weight.

Drinkability - easy enough pale ale to drink, but at $5 a bottle, not one I'm in a hurry to try again.

Baird Sising Sun Pale Ale

Appearance: Glass bottle into pint glass. Color is golden amber with yellow hihglights. More or less clear. Id guess 9 SRM

Smell: Light malt smell, slighty sour in there, but mostly I would describe it as alsmost a green apple kind of thing, sweet slightly sour

Taste: Highly level of carbonation, little bit...tangy! Very sligh malt taste but Its in there. Light malt finish of dry hops. As I drank through the pint the more subtle florals kind of disipated, and I was left with more of a blended malt/hop taste.

Mouthfeel: I was epxecting watering but it holds together suprisingly well, medium body

Drinkability: Relatively low ABV, enough taste to be interesting, light enough to want another. Good drinker.

I found this single 12oz brown bottle at the Binny's store in Bloomingdale, IL for the hefty price of $4.99 a bottle. No freshness date, but a very cool looking label.

The beer poured a hazy golden/amber color with a huge 4-finger white head that lasts a long time. It also produced a ton of lacing.

Lots of fruity hop aroma (mangos, peaches, and orange) with some mild malt sweetness underneath.

The taste is very underwhelming. There's a very mild maltiness to it, but it's not sweet at all, despite the detection of a kiss of honey. Some citrusy hops provide most of the flavor. Orange and orange peel are the predominant flavors. Bitterness is mild for an APA. It tastes alright, but I'm not wowed over like I should be for that kind of price.

Medium body with medium carbonation.

Not sure about the actual alcohol content as BA lists it as 5.1%, the Baird website lists it as 5.3%, and my bottle doesn't list it at all, but in any case it's well hidden and easy to drink. My complaint is that it's not that exceptional to demand that kind of price.

Pours hazy gold with a small white head. OK lacing.

Some sweet citrus fruits on the nose with a grainy malt profile and maybe some floral hop components.

Some slight citrus up front before more of the grainy malt character takes over. Finishes slight spicy on the back end.

Pretty smooth mouthfeel. There's a little harshness from bittering from the end, but not bad. Appropriate carbonation.

Solid beer although nothing about this one wowed me. In Japan, this probably stands out though and I'd be happy to drink one anytime.

I like hoppy beers, so generally I will not turn away a Pale Ale. This isn't exceptional, but I could sit and drink a few at a time. It's not extremely memorable, but I do like to support the Japanese Beer industry because with the creativity of their cooking, I imagine their beer scene is going to keep improving in the next few years. The label on this site is nice; the label on mine was less attractive, but I assume the beer tastes the same and that should be the point. I would conclude by quoting my good friend Makoto and say, "This was not a suck!"

360ml bottle poured into tulip sept17 2010

A hazy pale orange with enough clarity to see some bubbles and suspended particles. two finger head slowly falls to a 1/4in film that leaves some patches of lace

S some orange rind and caramel

T some spicy hops on top of what I smell, just a little pine decent but not amazing

M more carbonation then I could see creams it up more then enough to please

D I could session this with no issues except an empty bank account

worth trying and it's good knowing if I'm ever in Japan there's plenty too drink, luckily I can find many good brews from there right here in Alberta

Pours a cloudy amber color with a large white head that has good retention. Heavy lacing is left on the glass surface. Fine particulate matter is suspended in the liquid. Strong noble hop aroma, spicy and grassy. Unusual for a pale ale to use noble hops. The flavor is dominated by the hops as well. Pepper, cloves, lemons, and a very faint earthyness. A little toasted malt is evident. The Baird website says this was brewed in the American West Coast style, but I couldn't not detect the citrus from the hops. I thought it more closely resembled a German Pilsner. Body is light with abundant, bordering on harsh carbonation.

A bit different take on a pale ale with the use of noble hops. Worth a try but I am not a fan of their bottle conditioning.

Most of the Japanese beers I've had have been macro brands, except for Hitachino Nest and now Baird Beer.

Pours a nice golden/amber color with a thin head into my glass. Very nice colors for the style.

Sweet, buttery malt with nary a hint of hops in the nose. Smells more like an English Pale Ale to me.

Taste confirms my suspicions. Pine resin and buttery malt mix in the most unusual manner.

Whatever hops there are, they were left to the aroma. Just sweet.

No freshness date so no way to know if this is what the brewer intended. Still, this is a solid example and I believe I'm correct in assuming that it's closer to the English version of this style.

Am I perpetuating some kind of stereotype if I describe a Japanese Pale ale as having a Saki-like edge? Perhaps. But here goes.

Pours a hazy amber with a gigantic blast of carbonation - almost overcarbonated. The head is sticky and clings nicely to the glass. The aroma is mild and slightly flowery, a little clover-like. The flavor is very polite and delicate - and this is where the Saki bit comes in. It's clearly a pale ale in the American tradition, but it has a restraint and dryness that I associated more with Saki. It's bone dry on the back of my mouth. The hops are slight and the malt has a slight sourness or bitterness, not unpleasant, but distinct and unusual for an American-brewed beer.

This is a good beer, and interesting to see how other brewing traditions intersect with the American one, but it is not a pale ale I will visit with often.

This is my first beer from this brewery so looking forwards to it,it pours a cloudy apricot hue with decent carbonation that leaves behind a very frothy two finger head and lacing here and there,on smell im getting apricot,tangello and some bitter grapefruit aromas,it has a pleasant mouthfeel which is between light and medium and well carbonated and on the first sip apricot stands out followed by mandarins,some light toffee and also a tiny touch of lemon zest bitterness right at the end but its not really bitter at all,overall its a nice drop thats tasty without being too complex and if it was cheaper could easily see this as a nice session beer.

Polished pumpkin with honey colored trim. A generous escape of CO2 on crown cracking produced a generous crown of manila colored foam that is soft and airy. The head looks better as it settles, managing to grace the glass with some decent looking lace in the process.

The nose is an improvement. First of all, it features the citric quality of an American pale ale. Second of all, the brewery says that RSPA is 'crafted in the American West Coast style'. It smells like mostly pale malt, with one or more C-hops added with a moderately heavy hand.

What could be more appropriate than drinking Rising Sun with the rising sun right outside my front window? This is a tasty version (like all Baird beer) that favors balance over hop ferocity. That must have been the brewery's goal, because the label reads 'In balance there is harmony'. While harmony can be good, the beer equivalent of punk rock can be mighty fine as well.

I'm becoming a little less impressed as the ounces flow by. The beer actually tastes more English than American, for whatever that's worth. There simply isn't enough hop flavor for this hophead. Flavors include orange peel, grapefruit peel and apricots, alongside *barely* toasted malt. In the end, the beer is a little too simple and a little too polite. To be fair, bitterness builds by the bottom half of the bottle.

No complaints about the body/mouthfeel. A somewhat generous amount of malt helps to fill things out and keep any potential rough edges smoothed over. Despite initial fears, the carbonation isn't fizzy in the least.

Rising Sun Pale Ale is my least favorite Baird beer so far. Having said that, if you enjoy the style (and happen to be placing an order at Liquid Solutions), it's a worthwhile purchase. I don't recall the price, but it's probably too high to be anything other than one-and-done. There's no need to look toward the Land of the Rising Sun for a quality American pale ale.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on June 6, 2012. The pour is medium-amber with a short-lived foamy head but I am looking at it through a cloud. Sweet malts greet the nose with a light hop note but a slightly more powerful citrus, or more specifically, wild berry aroma. The body runs about light to medium, which seems appropriate for the style. There was an upfront, high bitter hop quality in the taste but it still had a very clean finish. Not an amazing pale ale but definitely a drinkable one.

Found this one as a single at Brawley's in Charlotte.

Poured from a 12oz brown bottle.

Pours a nice somewhat cloudy golden orange color. Massive bubbly head on this pour, nearly 4 fingers, which turns into a nice foam and dissipates relatively slowly. Has thick foamy lacing. Lots of little bits of yeast in suspension inside the glass. Was also a small layer of yeast sediment in the bottle. The yeast bits eventually settle into a layer of yeast at the bottom of the glass. First time I have seen that with a pale ale.

It has a very nice aroma. Nice floral hop smells with some malts. Slight citrusy sweetness too. There is also a nice earthy aroma that comes through as it warms.

The taste is very nice. Starts off with some sweetness that quickly turns into bitterness from the hops. The yeast in the glass gives it a slight earthy taste. Also some malt flavors can be detected. Nice light to moderately bitter finish. Mouthfeel is nice. Feels smooth, carbonation seems relatively low.

Overall this one was excellent. Will definitely have this one again.
