Beneath the cool façade of the warrior, a red-hot flame of intensity, determination and, yes, anger burns. So it is with this unpredictable Brown Ale: fleeting malty sweetness and warmth hide complexity, a barely controlled bitterness, and, naturally, a bit of an angry edge.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Clear brown color with nice head and lacing.

This beer is much like an ESB. Slightly sweet caramel smell and taste. Pleasantly malty. Something I would have again.

Hazy opaque murky reddish brown pour with a creamy off white/pale tan head of about half a finger. Aroma caramel malt, raisin, brown sugar, slightly vinous. Taste starts malty sweet, bready, raisin, plum all of which sit until swallow when a hoppy bitterness, pine, burnt sugar overtakes the palate. The mouthfeel is creamy on a medium body coming to a lingering bitter crescendo. Liked more as it warmed and the slight unexpected shock of the bitterness faded.

Poured into a glass mug.
The appearance was about a medium brown color with a small cap of a little white foamy head sliding off at a decent pace. Some messy lace.
The aroma had some mineral water, semi-sweet nuts, light dose of milk chocolate and a sly whiff of sweet coffee on the back end.
The flavor leans towards the sweet side blending all of the previously mentioned aromas. Mild aftertaste of nuts, mineral water, milk chocolate, brown sugar and cola.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fine sessionability about it. Carbonation and ABV felt fine. Good finish with nuts, some dryness and brown sugar.
Overall, pretty nice English brown ale worthy of coming back to.

250ml Keg at Baird's Harajuku Taproom, Tokyo (¥600):
Quite a pleasant offering from Baird, albeit one that came through slightly lighter than expected but at least it was fresh & had some bitterness showing too. The beer was easy to drink & balanced with some subtle hops showing without being overly pronounced & overall the beer was quite a clean, sessionable offering that was well worth trying too.

On tap at Alza Osteria in Brea, CA.
Wow. A great recommendation.
Deep brown hue. Light tan head. Nose is chocolate and roast with a slight nutty note.
Taste is more of the same with a slightly drying hop finish. Really goes back and forth from the roast to the sweet.
Mouthfeel is full enough to make it stand out in my mind. Really works.
Overall, a fine brown ale.

11.2 oz. bottle poured into tulip
(10/22/14 package date ... 18 months old)

L: brown ... murky brown orange with 1/4-inch head of beige foam, some sticking

S: super sweet ... after 18 months in the bottle, the malt has obviously taken over; peach/fruity sweet, bread malt, molasses, lots of syrup on french toast; floral hops

T: mix of sweet peach, fruit, light malt with a lingering hop bitterness, earthy dirt hops, floral hops, though the malt has almost fully taken over

F: ale soft, close to midweight

O: at 18 months old, it's not awful, but it has a look, taste and feel of a pretty old brew; still, the aroma is still very nice, and overall it still maintains an authentic English brown ale profile; a fresh one of these with a big hop bite would seem to be tasty; if I get a chance to try a fresh one, I will

This has such an interesting story that I hate to give it a below average rating.
An American opens a brewery in a country that made its economic recovery (after World War 2) by copying and then improving on America's obsession, the automobile. The American marries a Japanese woman who becomes his business partner. Their brewery looks like theAmerican model brewery with many, perhaps 100 brews, many of whom seem like American renditions.
Will their current beers win the hearts of as many Americans as their cars did?
Of course not.
Can this country of seeming over-achievers eventually produce incredible beers?
Eventually.
What about this one?
Good beer, but the hops linger too long for it to be classified as an English Brown. I view it as an American Brown.

This beer was listed in the "!001". Should it be? Less on its quality and more on its being a prelude.

330ml bottle poured into tulip.

Pours a hazy brick brown with one skinny finger of light tan head that leaves Arabian skyline lace as it recedes.

Smells of grapefruit and lemon zest, brown sugar, semi-sweet chocolate and mild green hops.

Tastes of more brown sugar malt, chocolate covered mixed nuts, faint cold coffee and mild citrus/pine hops.

Feels soft and creamy. Solidly medium bodied with smooth carbonation. Finishes off-dry.

Verdict: Highly recommended. A slightly hoppier than usual brown ale.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/8/2015. Listed as 7% on the bottle. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/piney hops and dark/bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate/nuttiness, light citrus, pine, and herbal/floral earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/piney bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light citrus/pine, and herbal/floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/bready malt and citrus/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly creamy/bready, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Some light dryness from bitterness as well. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good American brown ale style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/bready malt and citrus/earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

360 ml brown bottle. No date, but the amount and coarse nature of the sediment makes me think this may not be very fresh.

Appearance: Hazy mahogany with a khaki head that displays good retention and leaves some lacing.

Smell: Loads of medium roasted and chocolate malts, some chocolate, and a slight hop note.

Flavor: lightly sweet and very malty with some faint yeast notes adding complexity. Hints of raisins and caramel.

Mouthfeel: Light side of medium body; some dryness in the finish.
